What pro digital camera for a beginner? (not point and shoot)

So I am starting to think about a Xmas gift for my gf.

She has mentioned at one point that she would love to get one of those old school cameras that isn't just a point and shoot style. She actually wants to learn to take more professional photos by adjusting the clarity herself and having total control.

She has never taken photos like this before and only has one of those mini digi cams. I was thinking about getting the old school film cameras as a starter, but I was thinking that, that would be a waste or money and her use. So I am now leaning towards one of those professional digi cams that the user has full control of the picture.

My question now is what camera should I get for her? She does not need an expensive one since she is a beginner and she may lose interest. The only requirements is that the camera be:

1. Digital
2. Manual Controls
3. Cheap
4. Reliable

Is there a camera out there that you guys recommend?

I'm talking about these types of digi cams:

That one seems to fit the bill. It's cheaper now because a new model, the XTi, has arrived. You can get that camera and lens for around $600.

Word of advice for your own benefit, exclude the word "pro" from any other posts or searching you may do on this. Cameras that are referred to as "pro" digital are a whole other world above and beyond what you're looking to get your GF.

^ I was just going to say that. The thread title uses the words "beginner" and "pro" together.

But we know what you mean.... you're looking for an entry level DSLR. Do a search of this forum, as there have been dozens of threads asking the same type of question. You'll probably find a lot of the comparisons that people will just repeat here.

Do you (and your girlfriend) understand the cost of DSLR photograghy? Just because the camera costs ~$600 doesn't mean that's where you stop. Additional lenses, storage devices, etc.

I would suggest a high-end point and shoot camera with full manual control. The Canon S3 comes to mind.

^^Nice. With the Leica lens you should get really nice, sharp images. That camera has been getting really good write-ups.

It may be a Leica design, but it's manufactured by Panasonic in Japan. Most German Leica lenses are in the $2800 range.

Still, the FZ-30 has been getting decent reviews. I like the manual focus and zoom controls on the lens. I hate the electronic zoom and focus on most P&S cams.

Back to the original topic, the new Nikon D40 should be available in a couple weeks for $599 with a 18-55mm lens. Canon just reduced pricing on the Rebel XT (not XTi) to $599 body only and $699 with a 18-55 lens.
