Upgrading the D50 by this fall possibly D200

So I'm currently trying to sell the D50 I have right now in hopes to buy the D200 later this Fall. Is there any news of something else coming up? Are the D200 users here very satisfied or do they wish they went with the D2X or a higher end camera?

I guess I might be open to other brands of DSLR's however I've just taken a liking to Nikon.

The D200 is a fantastic cam and it's unlikely that they'll replace it before PMA next spring. I assume you already have glass for the D50, so it probably doesn't make sense to switch brands unless there's something you don't like about Nikon. The 5D is the closest competitor to the D200 in the Canon lineup, but it's quite a bit more $$$.

Why not keep both?
I plan on getting a D200 body later this year as well and it would be nice to have a good backup.

I just got a D200 - it's a great camera. My brother has a D2X, and honestly unless you know for certain that you need the D2X the D200 is probably plenty. I certainly could not justify nearly triple the $$$ for the D2X.

Nikon's product cycles are long enough that you don't need to worry about a significantly better model being out next spring.

I was going to sell my D70 but have changed my mind - I'll keep it as a backup and a second camera to let others use.

As everyone else has said. The D200 is basically a baby D2X. Put a grip on it and you are close to the weight.

The camera feels great in hand. I've been told that the weatherproofing isn't as good as Nikon suggests --- so don't throw it into a lake But then again, who would?

Bets,

Dustin

I'm pretty sure that I'll being taking the upgrade plunge myself this Fall or early Winter. It depends on what Canon announces at Photokina. If there's nothing significant announced, then I'm going to get a 30D or maybe even a 5D depending on what the prices are then. I have confidence though that something new will be announced that's going to strongly tempt me to wait.

I can't imagine Canon will be announcing anything new, seeing as the 30D just came out and the 5D before that. Nothing new at the 30D's price point anyway.

The 5D was announced in late August of '05. This year's Photokina show will be a little over one year since then so it's not inconceivable that something new will be announced. I agree though that it's still pretty doubtful or that anything new will be a minor upgrade ala 20D -> 30D.
