So I just got mine last week and shot my first wedding with it last weekend. I LOVE it! I went from a 5D mk1 to a 1D3 to the 5D2. Especially now that I have a 16-35, it gets seriously wide.
I also picked up a 50 1.4 and 100 Macro. Needless to say, I had a lot of fun shooting last weekend....

ridiculously cool. I am optimistic that they will continue to fine-tune it and eventually will have selectable fps.

Canon 5D Mark II helmet mount attracts Hollywood's attention

by Donald Melanson, posted Jul 20th 2009 at 4:29PM
<!-- sphereit start -->

Details are a bit light on this one, but the Planet 5D blog has received an email from the director of photography on 24, who himself received an email from the DP of Dollhouse, who passed on a video of a Canon 5D Mark II helmet mount built by the folks at Panavision. The rig was apparently designed specifically for use in fight scenes and other instances where a very close camera point-of-view is beneficial, and of course for "parachute drops and the like." The story also goes that the mount might have actually been used on Iron Man, although that's yet to be confirmed. Hit up the read link below to check out the video for yourself, although it unfortunately doesn't actually include any sample footage taken with the rig.

It appears that Shane Hurlbut, Director of Photography on Terminator Salvation, is the guy behind that awesome Canon5D MK II helmet. He also happens to be the guy Christian Bale went ape shit on during filming.

If the end result is superior video and/or video that couldn't be obtained before....what's the problem exactly?

No problem, I just figured we would chop Yummy onto any available robot, Sly into any Lego pic, and Scotty into any fairy picture, so why not chop Sarlaac into any pic involving extensive and awkward camera gear?

But I was asking what Sarlacc's problem is. SLR's for video obviously aren't going anywhere. We may not need a chop to see what he'll look like with that contraption on his head at some point in the not too distant future.

If any of you have US military ties, I have read on POTN of people getting screaming deals on the 5D MKII through AAFES. If I had the connections, I would buy one and deal with the ensuing firestorm from the wife later.

Man the video on the 5d mkII and the lower lens prices keep making me want to switch! The D700 is serving me well though.

Canon has announced that they will be releasing a firmware update for the 5D2 to add support for 24p and 25p modes: http://www.dpreview.com/news/0910/09...5dfirmware.asp

I've never seen Canon add features to a camera after it was released via firmware, but the 5D2 has gotten some love twice now.

That is pretty impressive and cool that Canon did that. It wasn't really expected.

There is someone on POTN that started a thread saying T1i users should demand that Canon update the firmware to provide 24p/25p modes. Seriously, you buy a camera knowing full well what it's capabilities are. Asking for something after the fact is pretty rediculous.

They shouldn't "demand", but I think it's keeping a closed mind - especially now that they have done so with the 5D2 - to say you shouldn't expect improvements on an existing piece of hardware. I mean, that's the beauty of firmware! Back before it existed, sure, things were static and couldn't change, just make the most of what you have. But the more electronic things get, the more logical it gets for firmware updates to be available that improve and enhance their functions and operation.

^Adding to that, I wouldn't think it unreasonable for Canon to offer that sort of after-the-fact firmware for a fee. It would ding upgrade-type camera sales, so it shouldn't hurt anyone's feelings to pay, say $50 or $100 for a firmware upgrade.

Furthermore, what does this say about Canon as a company, that they would bring 24p to the 5D2, after the fact? After all the fuss from everyone about it, the petition(s?) setup for it, etc. It makes them look REALLY GOOD and I would imagine it attracts customers to them. I would not be surprised if they see a spike in 5D2 sales just because of this seemingly small enhancement. This is a consumer's world, with companies vying to make the most appealing products thereof.

The biggest fuss about the 5D2 came from Professionals. I don't think they are worried about a T1i user.

we'll see - I mean, they didn't exactly bend over backwards to get 24p into the 5D2, they took their time and did it after the 7D came out. Maybe it's an "easy" update to implement across models once you have the code down; add some consumer loyalty to the mix and I don't think offering it on the Ti is too bad an idea!

so, they haven't actually "done it" yet, as far as the 5D2 update (funny how you get your info when you don't actually own the device lol) - they are developing it and its coming out in first half of 2010.

I wouldn't mind at least 30fps on the T1i at 1080p. Right now its only 20 which is almost useless.

I would guess that's a hardware limitation. Going down in fps, doable via firmware update. Going up, not so much.
