If you get the 5D and keep your 40D, you won't have to. :devilgrin

you see this

Canon Rumors Blog Archive A Fix for the 5D Mark II Black Dots? *UPDATED*

still, if I was looking to buy one I would want to wait for some announcement from Canon - it seems to be big enough an issue that they should notice and acknowledge it.

edit: whoa, we got SEO..

I just got an e-mail from someone (completely legit) offering the 5D mkII for $2449. It goes to him straight from Canon. I just don't know if he's considered an authorized reseller. I'm waiting to hear back on that and if I can forward the offer. I'm not in the position to buy one but wanted to give the head's up in anyone is interested.

More info to follow when/if I get confirmation.

^^ If it goes through, then more than one will be available. Still waiting to hear back.

BTW, it's a business, not just some dude. He sent an e-mail out to his customers. Just not sure if this is something that can be spread around.

some analysis of the black dots issue

http://www.bobatkins.com/photography...lack_dots.html

Canon have acknowledged that they are aware of the reports and their technical department is working on the issue. I'd expect to see some sort of announcement from Canon within the next week which describes the problem and what their plan for dealing with it is.

I just got confirmation that this deal can be opened up to others and that it will carry a full Canon USA warranty. PM me your e-mail for details if you're seriously interested.

There's no way I'd buy a 5D2 at this time, even if I was still shooting Canon. Not until they come out and say whats going on with those black dots. I've seen it in videos that people have shot with the 5D2.

I'm just throwing this out there.

AFAIK the black dots are only showing on certain types of shots under certain condition, which makes it sound like it's more of a software than a hardware issue, so a firmware update should be able to address it?

I know, but after the 1D3, they though that was just a software fix to start with as well. I'm not going through that again.

Thank you for using Canon products.

We have learned that some users of the Canon EOS 5D Mark II digital SLR camera have identified two types of image quality phenomena that appear under certain shooting conditions.

“Black dot” phenomenon (the right side of point light sources becomes black)
Vertical banding noise
We are currently investigating and analysing the causes, and examining measures to reduce or eliminate these phenomena by providing correction firmware. An announcement will be made on the Canon Web site when such measures have been determined.

Details of the phenomena and shooting conditions under which they are likely to occur are as follows.

“Black dot” phenomenon (the right side of point light sources becomes black)
When shooting night scenes, the right side of point light sources (such as lights from building windows) may become black. The phenomenon may become visible if the images are enlarged to 100% or above on a monitor or, if large prints of the images are made.
Vertical banding noise
If the recording format is set to sRAW1, vertical banding noise may become visible depending on the camera settings, subject, and background.
Vertical banding noise is not noticeable if the recording format is set to sRAW2.
Vertical banding noise does not occur if the recording format is set to RAW or JPEG.
Noise can be reduced if C.Fn II-3: Highlight tone priority is set to 0: Disable.
Canon always strives to provide the highest quality products to our customers. We apologize for any inconvenience these phenomena may have caused. We appreciate your kind patronage and support.

Almost 1D3 revisited, but they came out a lot faster to say they know they have a problem. For those who own this body, I really hope it's just a firmware fix.

It looks like there's a firmware fix available now:
http://web.canon.jp/imaging/eosd/fir.../firmware.html

Firmware Update Version 1.0.7 improves and mitigates the following two types of image quality phenomena that occur under certain shooting conditions.

1. "Black dot" phenomenon (the right side of point light sources become black)
2. Vertical banding noise

we'll have to see what exactly "improves and mitigates" means.. it doesn't say the problem has been FIXED..

I was just reading that at FM, they posted that the would like it to say eliminates not mitigates.

To moderate (a quality or condition) in force or intensity; alleviate.
To become milder.

alleviate.
To make (pain, for example) more bearable

Looks like it worked. I don't have the link but the guy who pretty much started the uproar about the black dots has posted over at dpreview. He says it works.

I wonder if it also fixes the "black hole" phenomenon in video mode?

It's like the black dots, only you can see them in video. They can appear in the middle of a brightly blown out part of the scene.

It's not quite a "green box mode" video camera that you would use for shooting kids running around in your livingroom, but people who know what they're doing can get excellent results. When the Rebel series has video, you can bet it will be easier to use.
