My advice, play with it. Get a lot of seat time working with files. Play with all the sliders, see what everything does. Also keep in mind, HDR's are unique - just because you got a certain result with a certain setting with one HDR doesn't mean another one will act similarly. And, this can be confusing - because the controls don't seem like they are working the same way. And the reason is because, they are not. In many ways I feel like HDR processing is gambling. You don't really know what you are going to get, you just have to try it out and see. Hope that helps.

I was using it frequently for a while, now I don't use it much. Photomatix for 90% of my work now. I find it easier to produce the more 'realistic' looking HDR's with Photomatix than with HDR Efex. Which is kind of odd, because when I first tried HDR Efex I was like damn this rocks, this makes it super easy to do HDR's.

if it's a good deal go for it. those 3 programs are rock solid. keep in mind CEP is on version 4.0 now, and I believe HDR Efex is on version 2 as well, or right around the corner

Photomatix 4.
Playing with Tonemap/Fusion was the key. Before I had no idea what I was doing so I gave up on it. Only until after I learn a bit more about Lightroom that I knew how to work with the settings in Photomatix.
