First attempt using my own studio lighting - topless model
First attempt using my own studio lighting - topless model
I finally got a chance to use my gear in a studio setup. One 580EX II and one 430 EX on stands with shoot through umbrellas triggered with cheapo ebay triggers.
I give you:

Actually, it's my nephew, Aaron.
After I finished shooting I realized that I didn't quite setup the lighting right. I took the shot in landscape and had one light at his feet and one at his head. I should have shot in portrait and had one light left and one right. Next time.

Thanks for the comments, guys. I actually like the kid shoots - especially since they go home when we're done.
You can. You already have one flash. The extra flash and the other accessories aren't too much. I've seen the 430 EX (not sure if II or I) going for $250. Stands and umbrellas are fairly cheap. Plus, since you're single, you can have real models.
Thanks. I was hoping to get something more dramatic, but this still worked.
Cheater! Yeah, my wife commented that I should have had him deeper in the basket and sat him up a bit. My wife was busy distracting the other nephew and my mom was taking a break (we were babysitting while my bro and SIL were out to dinner). I ended up spending less than an hour shooting, including setting up and taking down the lights. When he gets fussy, he wales like nothing you've ever heard, so we wanted to avoid that.
Once he's able to sit up and prop himself up while on his belly, we'll try some different things.

I agree my friend and I split a impact light stand kit for 120?
I'm using nikon cls. he was using some ebay cactus triggers the upgraded to alienbee cybersync which he can tether a few of my flashes through a mono audio cable.
I think there's a bit of a shadow at his head could be wrong? just watch out for that other than that I like it !

^^ Yes, there is some shadow - and not the kind I intended. Both of the lights were on his left (image right) so the shadows were cast to his right (image left). Next time the lights will be on each side.
I'd love to upgrade wireless triggers and strobes... and camera... and lenses... but one step at a time. The entire family (including grandparents) loves the shots, so maybe I'll get some other sessions down the road with a little cash to fund some upgrades.
