AWesome thanks for this suggestion. Looks like a great option. Of course downside is it doesn't look like a "nice camera" that you see everyone lug around....like a P&S size camera with a big nice lens (which is more important it seems).....

Who gives a rat's left nut what people think it looks like? Mirrorless is the future.

yeah that’s a good thing, punks think it’s a cheap camera and goes to next person.

So I'm buying my lady a beginner DSLR as she has been wanting one to take some nice photos.

I've looked at Canon T6/T6i, T7i, Rebel SL2. Also a friend suggested refurb store on canon.com as well. Will be going with the standard starter kit lens which should be good enough for her.

Amazon had some nice bundle/kit deals for the SL2 but the package I want doesn't ship to Hawaii....grr..... she's got small hands and we do lot of hiking so the small size/lighter weight of the SL2 is appealing

Suggestions?

FYI, the Canon SL2 is the same weight as the Sony A6500. They are both 453g

That SL2 is a pretty small and light DSLR.

That said, I would go with a Sony A6000. Still a great camera for the price. If you could afford a little more. Then id say the A6300 would be a better choice.

Since 2 Fuji guys chimed in. The X-T20 is good as well.

I guess the question should be, whats your budget?

The biggest downside of the Sony for entry level is the cost of the lenses. There are far more options at lower prices for the Canon.

I have both cameras you're considering. If I was going on a hike and wanted to have a camera just in case I would take the Sony. If I was going on a hike with the purpose of taking pictures, I'll take the Canon. It's all because I have better lenses for the Canon though. I look at the cost to get more lenses for the Sony to bring it up to the Canon's level and I cringe.

This is why I would go Fuji. Their stock 18-55 is probably THE best kit lens sold.

Yeah, what is that, a $200 dollar lens from Canon? How much is the Fuji?

I would prefer it to be less than 700. 500 range would be optimal.

I can spend more but with this being a beginner camera, didn't want to go too much. I have a friend who is notorious for binge spending on expensive gear whenever he picks up a new hobby and then he loses interest quickly (paintball, archery, tennis....buying high level gear for all these things from the get go....lol)

Been eyeing this one: https://shop.usa.canon.com/shop/en/c...mm-f-4-5-6-kit

This.

It's the beginner camera I suggest to anyone who asks this question. It's small, light, easy to carry, fun to use, and stellar performance (for the price). The best camera is always the one you have on you and the small/light is a good way to ensure you have it.
