Canon S2 IS: LCD Problem

My Dad's Canon S2 IS has a problem with the LCD. It will display information such as number of exposures left, flash information, etc.; all the vitals. But it will not show you the scene you are looking at. The mini-LCD in the viewfinder also does not work. The shutter operates and the camera will take pictures it just won't show them on the LCD and the LCD won't show what the lens seems prior to or after a shot is taken. Everything else with the camera is in working order.

Any thoughts before it is sent in for repair?

I'd contact Canon directly and arrange to have it sent to one of their repairs centers. However, if the camera is no longer under warranty, it may not be cost effective to have it repaired. Buying a new one may be a better deal. I'd call 'em and see what they say.

He's gonna check on the warranty. We can't remember when we purchased it or if we purchased an extended warranty.

The shutter closes but if you switch to the review setting to view the images it shows just a black screen with "1/1" in the corner. So it is reading an "image" off the CF card the image is just nothing but black.

Sounds like a dead sensor to me huh?

Maybe. To check, see if you can get an image off the CF card and view it on the computer. If you can, it's probably the LCD that's malfunctioning. If not, it may indeed be the sensor.

I'm leaning towards the sensor because both the LCD and the mini-LCD stopped working at the exact same time. Except the larger LCD still displays the camera info; just no images.

If the sensor was dead, you wouldn't be able to take any pictures.

Your LCD just lost connection with the display memory - kinda like
your monitor got unplugged. Your computer still works, but you can't see
what is going on.

Thanks. Sounds like a cheaper fix than a sensor replacement. If the sensor was dead would the shutter still operate when the button is pressed?

Because the LCD still has a displays the info, just not the image.

If you paid for the camera with an AMEX card, I think it double the manufacturer's warranty. Just a thought.

The images on the CF card are completely black when connected to a PC and displayed on the monitor.

That's not good. Definitely time to contact Canon and see what they say.

That's not as much as I would have guessed. What are you going to do? It might be worth looking at a new camera, but $135 isn't all that much, if the rest of the camera is ok.
