shot a family event in mRAW over the weekend, pretty happy with it. filesizes are 11-22mb, rather than 20-28mb. these are casual family pictures where I just don't need such large sizes.

I've decided I'll be switching to mRAW for receptions. I don't need the extra real estate to crop, and they're unlikely to be enlarged.

nice. and its not like these are small, they are 3888x2592. enough to easily enlarge to 8x10, if you wanted to. which is, the largest I could see anyone wanting one of these shots.

i posted this on my facebook too but here it is in case you missed it -

I just went outside to enjoy some of this beautiful Chicago day - walked out right in front of the Merc on Wacker.. the lighting was looking good and I wanted to try a shot similar to this one - I take out my iphone and go to take the pic, security guard tells me "no pictures". I look at him in disbelief. "I can't take a picture of this building, with my phone, standing here outside?" "No you cant take it standing here". I didn't want any trouble, so I just walked away, with a disgusted look I could not wipe off my face. This was appalling. I might have to go back there after work, just to get this shot. I was just standing on the curb, right next to the street, I wasn't near the building this security guy (rent-a-cop) was working in front of.

If you were standing on a public street, you were allowed to take the photograph. Rental cop be-damned.

addendum to the story:

many things went through my head after that happened, I wanted to go through the same convo sequence again, and tell him I was going to video-record it, I wanted to tell him that he can't stop me from taking...... pictures of a building outside, I wanted to report him to someone, I actually was going to the ATM and so I walked into the Chase there after that. I was giving him the evil eye from inside as effectively as I could because its just total BS and I wanted to make sure he knew how I felt about it. While I was inside, I noticed a lady walk by the building, with her phone out, taking a photo. And I could see the security guy looking and looking at me, and I pointed at her emphatically, and then I just shook my head and made sure he saw that. Total BS.

srika, I've had everything from private security guards to Metro police to tell me I can't take photos of stuff... Just be friendly and respectful and most of the time you can get away with anything. The ones that don't budge aren't worth your ire. Just go back some other time when someone else has the shift. If they give you shit as well, then call the building management, not the security company.

Anyway... here's a question for all of you... So if there was a nonprofit organization that publishes an ad-free magazine that has in the past used your Creative Commons photos, would it be awkward to ask them for a press/media pass to cover an upcoming event you really want to go to? Would you charge them for your time? Photos?

Hmm..no, I don't think it would be awkward at all. Not sure about charging for the photos in that case - you're scratching each others' backs, so to speak. I guess it depends on what the pass was worth to me.

You know, that's not a bad idea - there's a local equestrian rag that's used a few of my images. I'll have to keep that in mind.

thanks for the reminder, I need to call insurance today to followup. I had to fax them the 5D original receipt and the front page of user's manual, which I did a couple days ago. I don't get the impression that this is a quick process. It took me like 4 attempts over the course of 2 days to even get a hold of the contact I was given initially.

btw ran into a guy at the bar I shot at last night who owns 4 photo studios in Chicago. Specialty is weddings. He has 30 photogs on board and they do 600 weddings a year. I was like damnnn... I spent 30 mins talking to him about the business, etc showed him some of my work, he offered to hire me, I don't know if I'm interested in that kind of gig. It's not a boutique wedding shop, it's more of a "cookie-cutter" type of wedding shop. Do you have any thoughts.

I just saw this linked from a guy on flickr... it's old but funny... What would the internet crowds say if famous photogs were on the net:

I shared this on a local board too and a friend of mine posted this - he also posted the name of the company he had shot for - it was the same company. This is what I'm reluctant about.

I did one wedding last year for that type of place and I didn't care for it. I went and took the pictures, and i was just suppose to turn in the unedited jpegs. I understand they have a staff for editing, but thats part of the creative process for me, so I hated it. Also I couldn't use anything i shot for them in my personal portfolio (which is why they were never posted here). I want to find a photographer to work with, not a business to work for, but thats just my opinion.

this is great, never seen it before. of course I would never compare myself to any of these historically significant photographers, but I have had similar feelings about comments I get about pics. Its like this new breed of "photographers" who know nothing about ART. And, you can't explain it to them because a crooked line, is well, crooked. And bad. An OOF subject is wrong. Certain color combinations are wrong. It's like they went to a school and learned about focus, composition, lighting, and all those basic elements, and so that's all they do. How a picture "should" look. It's pretty damn annoying.

I could understand that side as well, didn't know it was like that. Just to take images and give them over to someone else. Sounds like a comic strip factory.

so its set up like how a newspaper is run or something?

imo, if you really want to do wedding stuff, just open up your own company.

thats what a buddy of mine did with a friend of his.

sorry if this has already been a topic... (or a thread for that matter), but how many of you would say you use MF more than 50% of the time (or even 75%)?

I ask because I'm starting to flip the switch to MF from AF quite often. I HAVE thought about saving up for a 85mm f1.4... but now I'm thinking maybe I can get away with a Korean made MF Rokinon/Samyang lens

^^ with the 5D I used MF maybe about 25% of the time, just when I couldn't get the AF to focus. With the 7D I've only used it for video (which is tough, because its so hard to see the focus in the VF). The AF is so good and controllable that I've never had to use it for photos. Such a pleasure to use.

So I'm in the middle of a 3-night gig this week, ending tonight. At a bar next to a Metra stop halfway to O'hare. The first night surprised me the hell out of me when I got there, they are like, shoot in JPG so we can get your memory card after an hour to upload the pics and display on the TV's throughout the bar. I'm like whattttt... After years of taking pics home to process, this was the first time I got a request like this. (There was the time I had to deliver JPG's at the end of an event, but I had my laptop with me so I shot RAW). It was a bit tricky at first but got better quick. Also, all the shots were in landscape orientation, since they were being displayed on the TV's. You gotta be ready for anything!

I think this gig may be showing me that I kinda do miss 'regular' events. The part I miss the most? The networking opportunities. Last night I met this guy who has worked for Canon for 20 yrs. He is a regional service manager now. He even had a Canon shirt on (but I didn't notice it because I was a tad too obliterated - so he had to tell me before I knew LOL). Boy was I glad I had a Canon in my hand!
