Nice, they took the giraffes out of the National Zoo, so they could make more room for the elephants.

They did it almost three years ago, they are turning half of the zoo into an elephant habitat. They got rid of the hippos and numerous other animals as well.
They just had seven lions cubs born and there is really NO where from them to grow up. Guess they didn't think about that when they were watching lion porn. This zoo sucks major ass.

Took this last night with my new D7000 at like 2 AM while I was waiting for my laptop to load XP. Was full manual at 300mm, handheld with no VR. Came out pretty good I think. I have always had issues getting good shots of the moon. The only other time I got decent shots with my D60 was with a tripod and about an hour of experimenting.

I didn't use VR because that lens doesn't have it. It's a Tamron 70-300mm AF lens. It's nice to finally have autofocus ability with it finally.

I really regret that I cropped the father of the bride off in this last shot. He was doing the drunken man dance. It would have been a great capture with a different composition.

Some test shots with new Canon 85mm f1.2 II
I use this Owl for test shots and to ward off woodpeckers. This is shot @ 1.4. I used AF, with focus points on center column of the owl's body. Light PP completed.

This is shot @ 1.2. I used AF, with focus points toward the right eye IIRC. Light PP completed.

and on a side note, really weird how "loose" the feel of the focal ring is... almost thought I had some damage until I read it's normal for this lens. The other thing I don't like about the lens is that the hood does not "snap" in place like most of the other canon lens.' It also rotates when you MF. wtf!

Yeah, that fly wheel on that lens is hard to get use to, no matter how many times I used it.

The 85L does not use a traditional focusing mechanism that you are used to. In most lenses, when you twist the focus ring, that turns the focus barrel assembly, which moves the internal elements. The focus ring, and focus barrel assembly are mechanically linked together. This is why you feel some resistance when focusing most lenses. The 85L uses a "focus by wire" mechanism. The focus ring is NOT mechanically linked to the focus assembly. The focusing is actually done by an internal electric motor. Turning the focus rings, simply sends electronic signals to the focus motor, which in turn moves the focusing elements. Because the focusing mechanism is done electronically, if the camera is off, then turning the focus ring will do nothing.
Since you don't have your camera with you, you should also be prepared for another "surprise" that many new 85L owners arent aware of. If you mount the lens, turn the camera on, and then turn the focus ring, nothing will happen. You may think it is broken, but actually it isn't. If your camera is setup for the default focus/metering, when you half press your shutter button, the camera will focus. So, to manually focus with the 85L, you have to half press the shutter button, hold it down, and move the focus ring to manually focus.
However, if you use Custom Function 4, to seperate your AF from the shutter button and move it to the AF-On button, then you can turn the focus ring at anytime, and the lens will move the focus assembly. You don't have to half press & hold the shutter button.
Many people don't like the "focus by wire" assembly on the 85L. I'm convinced that it is a necessity. Because the DOF at f/1.2 is incredibly small, the focus mechanism must be able to focus at very fine intervals. You will see that the focus by wire design on the 85L allows some very precise focusing ability, which I feel is necessary to accurately place the DOF when using the 85L

I think the fly wheel is the reason it is SO hard to focus, not the reason it should be fly by wire.
It's fly by wire so the lens isn't any bigger than it is. If the focus was as other lens, the 85L would need another 1/2" or so size in the diameter.
It is a great lens, I'd have it over the 50L any day.

any objections to the (multiple) naked man-ass? I'm having trouble deciding whether that is NWS or not.. this is not a NWS thread. I can say, I wouldn't want my manager seeing that image on my screen. LOL
