I found a site with some pics of the new STi in action in Japan: http://www.watanabe.ws/new_impreza/index.html

I still can't get over that grille though.

Fingers crossed that the next edition will be a little more tame.

2006 Official STI Information

SUBARU IMPREZA® WRX® STI® RESTYLED FOR 2006
300-hp Supercar Gains AWD Enhancement and New Safety Technology

CHERRY HILL, N.J., July 21, 2005 – Subaru of America, Inc., America’s all-wheel drive leader, has restyled its Impreza line for 2006 and in addition given the all-conquering 300-horsepower WRX STI model several performance enhancements. On the safety front, all Impreza models gain the new dualstage Subaru Advanced Airbag System.

Following an interior redesign for 2005, all Impreza models have been restyled for 2006 to reflect the new brand identity. The new Subaru signature front-end design for Impreza features a three-section mesh-type grill inspired by the company’s aircraft heritage, plus boldly styled headlights with smoke-tinted lenses.

All 2006 Impreza models are also identified by a new tail lamp cluster design.
The 2006 WRX STI is also distinguished by the lower-profile hood scoop from the standard WRX to aid forward visibility. Daytime running lights (DRL) are added to the safety roster to make the WRX STI more visible to other drivers. A new roof vane spoiler, inspired by the Impreza World Rally Championship competition car, contributes to stability at track speeds and reinforces the car’s highperformance
attitude.

The WRX STI received several significant chassis performance enhancements for 2005, including wider wheels. For 2006, the addition of a steering sensor input to the DCCD All-Wheel Drive system enhances power distribution response by more accurately relaying the car’s cornering situation. The WRX STI is based on the Impreza WRX platform but is completely re-engineered to provide even higher levels of acceleration, handling and braking performance that challenge the world’s best sports
cars. In its first year, the WRX STI won Road & Track magazine’s “Best Car 2004” Reader’s Choice Award, edging out several dedicated(?) sports cars, including the Porsche® 911® GT3.

The Impreza WRX STI is powered by a turbocharged and intercooled 2.5-liter DOHC boxer engine producing 300 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 300 lb-ft. of peak torque at 4,000 rpm. Teamed exclusively to a 6-speed manual transmission, the engine can propel the WRX STI from zero-to-60 mph in under five seconds. Power is transferred to all four wheels by a sophisticated Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system with Driver Controlled Center Differential (DCCD) to optimize performance in all conditions.
Rally Tested, Road Ready The WRX STI draws motorsports technology directly from Subaru expertise in World Rally Championship (WRC) competition and is designed to appeal to the most serious driving enthusiasts. STI stands for Subaru Tecnica International, the high-performance and motorsports subsidiary of Fuji Heavy
Industries Ltd.

In its exterior design, Impreza WRX STI leaves no doubts about its performance potential – a look that is equally functional. The scoop in the aluminum hood feeds outside air to an intercooler that is significantly larger than the intercooler used on WRX models. The dual-plane rear spoiler – which appears to be borrowed directly from the Impreza World Rally Car – helps reduce lift and improve stability at track speeds. An aerodynamic underbody cover and the new roof vane spoiler contribute to enhanced high-speed track stability. Airflow is also managed via front side spoilers on the front bumper
and STI-design aerodynamic side ground effects.

The front fascia features a four-beam headlight system with high-intensity discharge (HID) low beams. Distinctive STI fog light insert covers add to the no-nonsense look. Large diameter Brembo® brakes are clearly visible between the spokes of the 17-inch lightweight aluminum-alloy BBS® wheels.

300-Horsepower Turbo Legend
The 2.5-liter horizontally opposed (Boxer) 4-cylinder engine is based on a specially reinforced semiclosed deck engine block with forged aluminum-alloy pistons, forged high-carbon steel connecting rods and sodium-filled exhaust valves. The Subaru Active Valve Control System (AVCS) variable valve timing technology helps provide strong torque characteristics throughout the engine’s operating range.

The turbocharger produces 14.5 psi of maximum boost compared to 13.5 in the standard WRX. The large capacity intercooler uses a manually operated water spray feature to enhance intercooler efficiency during high-performance driving.

Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive With Driver Controlled Center Differential (DCCD)
The Impreza WRX STI is equipped with the brand’s most performance-directed Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system featuring Driver Control Center Differential (DCCD). A planetary center differential provides a performance-oriented 35 percent front / 65 percent rear power split. Set in automatic mode, the electronically managed continuously variable transfer clutch can vary the torque distribution ratio as
needed to suit driving and road-surface conditions.

Automatic mode provides the best all-around performance for most drivers and circumstances, varying the front/rear torque distribution automatically depending on driving conditions and driver input. The system determines the ideal power distribution in response to vehicle acceleration, deceleration, steering angle, cornering force and wheel slippage.

In manual mode, DCCD allows the driver to vary the front-to-rear torque distribution (up to 50/50 maximum) to optimize All-Wheel Drive performance for varying driving conditions. The driver first selects manual mode with a console-mounted button and then turns a thumbwheel on the center console to select from among six levels of center differential locking. Increasing the lock factor keeps more power at the front wheels, which the driver might want in certain driving conditions, on particular roads or to
suit an individual driving style.

A helical-type limited-slip front differential and mechanical clutch-type limited-slip rear differential help to optimize power distribution side-to-side, helping to ensure that the inside wheels don’t slip during cornering.

Competition-Bred Chassis
A super-stiff Ring Frame Reinforced body structure with a hydroformed front subframe provides the foundation for the high-integrity Impreza platform. Compared to the standard WRX models, the WRX STI is lowered by 0.4-inch to help yield a lower center of gravity. The 4-wheel independent suspension inherits technology from the Impreza WRC competition car, but has been strictly optimized in the WRX
STI for high cornering performance on paved roads. Inverted struts used for the front and rear suspension increase bending resistance for quicker and more consistent performance under hard cornering. A rally-derived variation on the MacPherson-type strut, the
inverted strut essentially functions like a conventional shock absorber set upside-down and encased by another tube. The strength of the outer steel tube bears the brunt of bending forces acting upon the strut under cornering, rather than the internal piston rod. The piston rod operates in the lower portion of the strut tube rather than the upper section.

The secondary upper tube mounts to the inner fender where the piston rod would mount in a conventional strut. The piston’s stroke remains consistent during hard cornering, helping to maintain the ideal tire-toroad surface contact pattern for increased traction and cornering power.

Aluminum front suspension lower control arms and aluminum rear suspension lateral links reduce unsprung vehicle weight. The standard BBS light-alloy wheels measure 17 x 8-inches and are equipped with 225/45 ZR17 Bridgestone Potenza RE070 directional performance tires.

The quick-ratio steering system yields 2.6 turns lock-to-lock, and the steering rack uses a “cannon mount” for greater rigidity that improves on-center response. A damper valve helps reduce kickback that the increased rigidity might cause.

Brembo Brakes with Super Sport ABS
Subaru equipped Impreza WRX STI with one of the most advanced and performance-optimized braking systems on the market today. The powerful Brembo Performance Brake System employs ventilated 4-wheel disc brakes to help ensure stopping power and consistency commensurate with the vehicle’s high performance capability. The front discs measure 12.7 inches in diameter and 1.2-inch thick and utilize 4-piston, fixed-position calipers. The rear discs are 12.3 inches in diameter and 0.8-inch thick and use 2-
piston, fixed-position calipers.

A combination of Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and the Super Sport Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) helps to reduce stopping distances and understeer compared to conventional ABS systems. EBD provides precise control of braking pressure between the front and rear wheels based on the vehicle load to improve stability and stopping distances. Conventional ABS systems control the rear wheels as a pair, reducing the braking force to both rear wheels. Super Sport ABS, using input from a lateral gsensor,
can control the braking forces at each rear wheel independently, optimizing the braking ability during hard cornering to help reduce understeer.

Performance-Directed Interior
The WRX STI conveys its performance attitude from the inside, as well. The driver grips a MOMO® 3-spoke leather-wrapped steering wheel. Performance design front seats feature substantial side bolsters, integrated head restraints and embroidered “STI” logos. The seats are upholstered in unique perforated 2006 Subaru Impreza WRX STI Release / 5 blue high-grip Ecsaine® fabric with contrasting black knit bolsters, complemented by matching blue door trim and blue floor carpeting.

The WRX STI instrument gauge cluster places a 9,000-rpm tachometer in the center, flanked by a 160-mph speedometer, DCCD display and fuel and temperature gauges. All three primary gauges feature aluminum trim rings. Red LED indicators and an illuminated “STI” logo in the tachometer reinforce the sporty driving environment. Previewing the vehicle’s performance potential, all the gauge needles swing
to their maximum positions when the ignition is switched on, and then return to their normal positions.

The standard automatic climate control system integrates cabin air filtration. The standard 140-watt AM/FM premium stereo plays through six speakers and includes a 6-disc in-dash CD changer. An engine immobilizer security system is standard equipment.
New Safety Technology for 2006 Front seat head/chest side impact air bags (SRS) are standard, and all Impreza models for 2006 get the new Subaru Advanced Frontal Airbag system. The driver’s side air bag deploys according to the driver’s proximity to the steering wheel, as measured by a sensor on the seat track. In the passenger side front
seat, a sensor module detects weight on the passenger seat – first determining if it’s occupied, and if so by a child or adult – to control air bag deployment. As part of the system, the dashboard features a new “Airbag” indicator light.

Front seatbelts integrate electrically triggered pre-tensioners and force limiters. A safety pedal system in all Impreza models is designed to prevent injury to the driver’s lower limbs in the event of a serious frontend collision.

2006 Official Impreza/WRX Information

SUBARU REDESIGNS REPOWERS 2006 IMPREZA® LINE
•IMPROVED PERFORMANCE FOR 2006 WITH NEW 2.5 i POWERTRAIN
•IMPREZA WRX ADDS 2.5-LITER BOXER TURBO
•RESTYLED IMPREZA FEATURES BOLD NEW STYLING

CHERRY HILL, N.J., July 21, 2005 – Subaru of America, Inc., America’s all-wheel drive leader, has introduced the more powerful, restyled 2006 Impreza 2.5 i and Outback® Sport models, featuring new engine technology and additional safety features.

Following an interior redesign for 2005, all Impreza models have been restyled for 2006. The new Subaru front-end design for Impreza features a three-section mesh-type grill inspired by the company’s aircraft heritage, plus boldly styled headlights with smoke-tinted lenses. Sedan models feature revised wide-body fenders, while the wagons have their own flared fender design, as on the previous model. All 2006 Impreza models are also distinguished by a new tail lamp cluster design. An aluminum hood reduces weight over the front wheels on the Impreza 2.5 i and Outback Sport (WRX models already had an aluminum hood).

The Impreza 2.5 i and Outback Sport models get a more powerful version of the 2.5-liter SOHC horizontally opposed (Boxer) engine for 2006. The addition of the i-Active Valve Lift system and the Electronic Throttle Control system boost horsepower to 173 from 165 while retaining the responsive low and mid-range torque that Subaru customers appreciate. All Subaru models are equipped with Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive as standard equipment, giving them responsive handling and the safety benefit of optimal traction for all driving conditions.

The optional 4-speed direct control automatic transmission features enhanced control logic for 2006. Revisions to the electronically controlled version of Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive teamed
with this transmission contribute to better handling and enhanced traction performance.

On the safety front, all Impreza models gain the new dual-stage Subaru Advanced Airbag System, while the Impreza 2.5 i and Outback Sport models also get the front seat head/chest side-impact
air bags that were already featured in the WRX models.

Impreza 2.5 i – America’s Most Affordable All-Wheel Drive Sport-Compact The Impreza 2.5 RS models have been renamed “2.5 i” for 2006, making their nomenclature consistent with the larger Subaru Legacy® models. The 2.5 i Sedan and Sport Wagon models are
the most affordable all-wheel drive sport-compacts in the market. Both models continue with the sport-tuned suspension, 16-inch alloy wheels (new 5-spoke design for 2006) and sport-design front seats featured on the previous 2.5 RS.

Also continued is the generous standard equipment list that makes the Impreza 2.5 i models among the best-equipped cars in their class: Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), air conditioning, power windows, power mirrors and door locks, remote keyless entry, AM/FM stereo system with single-disc CD player, tilt-adjustable steering column, security system, an outside temperature gauge and variable intermittent windshield wipers.

The Impreza 2.5 i Sport Wagon offers excellent utility and versatility, providing 27.9 cu. ft. of cargo space with the 60/40-split rear seatback up and 61.6 cu. ft. of space with the seatbacks folded down.

Outback Sport – The Sporty Crossover
Outback® Sport, based on the Impreza 2.5 i Sport Wagon, helped usher in the crossover category a decade ago. The Outback Sport Special Edition introduced for 2005 continues with its highvalue package of additional amenities.

Outback Sport styling is highlighted by steel gray metallic lower body color, side moldings and bumpers, plus projector-beam halogen fog lights. Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, 4-wheel independent heavy-duty raised suspension and 16-inch aluminum alloy wheels with 205/55 R16
all-season tires give Outback Sport all-road, all-weather capability. Standard features are shared with the Impreza 2.5 i Sport Wagon and add a 12-volt cargo area power outlet, roof rails with cross bars and a rear bumper step pad.

The Outback Sport Special Edition enhances comfort, function and style with the addition of a leather-wrapped steering wheel, auto-dimming compass rear-view mirror and armrest extension,
plus a 140-watt AM/FM premium stereo with 6-disc in-dash CD changer, six upgraded speakers and a sub-woofer. A rear gate spoiler accents the sporty appearance.

More Power and Enhanced Automatic Transmission
The naturally aspirated 2.5-liter boxer engine in Impreza 2.5 i and Outback Sport models gains the new i-Active Valve Lift system that boosts horsepower to 173 from 165 in the 2005 models.
Just as important, the new technology improves real world drivability and performance. Peak torque output remains at 166 lb.-ft. at 4,400 rpm – still one of the highest torque ratings in the
segment.

Using oil pressure generated by engine speed and load, the i-Active system varies intake valve lift by locking the tappet into a higher position by means of a transverse pin. The effect is that of
having two separate tappets to act on the camshaft lobe operating the intake valve. Variable lift works on one of the two intake valves. At low engine speeds the two valves open at different
levels, causing a swirl of air and fuel and boosting torque. At higher speeds, both valves are opened in the “high” position to increase horsepower.

The optional 4-speed direct control electronic automatic transmission features the more advanced adaptive shift control system first introduced for the 2005 Legacy and Outback models. The new
system controls transmission shift points based on driver input and vehicle load to optimize engine performance. The slope control feature provides engine-braking control on descents.

Enhanced Safety
The Impreza 2.5 i and Outback Sport models gain front seat head/chest side-impact air bags,
which were already featured in the WRX models. All Impreza models for 2006 get the new Subaru Advanced Frontal Airbag system. The driver’s side air bag deploys according to the driver’s proximity to the steering wheel, as measured by a sensor on the seat track. In the
passenger side front seat, a sensor module detects weight on the passenger seat – first determining if it’s occupied, and if so by a child or adult – to control air bag deployment. As part of the system, the dashboard features a new “Airbag” indicator light.

The Subaru Ring Frame Reinforced body structure provides Impreza models with outstanding protection in many types of collisions. A hydroformed front subframe and side sills along with tailored-blank welded B-pillars provide an exceptionally strong structure. The high degree of rigidity contributes to sharp handling response and smooth ride quality while helping to reduce interior noise.

On all Impreza models, the standard 4-channel / 4-sensor Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) incorporates Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD). This system enhances braking performance and stability by actively optimizing braking force between the front and rear wheels
according to how the vehicle is loaded with passengers and cargo.
In all Subaru models, the front 3-point seatbelts integrate electrically triggered pre-tensioners and force limiters. Active front seat head restraints in the Impreza 2.5 i and Outback Sport models are
designed to help reduce whiplash injury in a rear collision. The safety brake pedal system is designed to yield during a serious frontal impact in order to help reduce injury to the driver’s lower limbs.

Standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive is a complete system comprised of the horizontally opposed boxer
engine and the all-wheel drive power distribution system that varies by model and transmission.

The aluminum boxer engine and simple, symmetrical drivetrain layout help to lower the center of gravity, which in turn contributes to precision handling response.

Impreza 2.5 i and Outback Sport models equipped with the 5-speed manual transmission utilize a viscous coupling locking center differential that distributes power 50/50 front to rear. In models
with the 4-speed direct control automatic transmission, an electronically managed continuously variable transfer clutch actively manages the power distribution based on acceleration,
deceleration and available traction. Both systems power all four wheels all the time and will transfer more power to the wheels with the best grip should slippage occur.

For 2006, new control logic in the automatic transmission AWD system enhances stability by monitoring individual wheel speeds and reacting more quickly to wheel slippage. The new control logic also helps to improve tight corner braking, contributing to more neutral handling response (reduced understeer and oversteer). The system provides enhanced traction on slippery surfaces, as well.

omg what is it with car manufacturers STILL doing the 'full-rice" taillights look!?!?!? they must have missed the memo.... CLEAR RICED TAILLIGHTS = OUT!!!!!!!

expect 1st gen STi owners to be happy... the value of their cars are only going to increase, if not stay the same.

Subaru Applies to the FIA for Group N Homologation

Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. (FHI), a global manufacturer of transportation and aerospace-related products and the maker of Subaru automobiles, today announced that it would submit a homologation application to the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) for the finely tuned new Subaru Impreza WRX STI spec C to rally as a Group N vehicle in 2006*.

To enter FIA-approved racing and rallying championships that take place around the world, cars must be homologated according to the FIA regulations. Group N (production cars) is one of the rally and off-road vehicle groups set forth by the FIA. Defined as large-scale series production touring cars, Group N homologation imposes strict limits on modifications to production models and is known as the category that best reflects the performance inherent to the basic production model.

WRX STI spec C is very suitable for racing due to its lightened body and high performance engine. Therefore, the application embodies the company’s plan to position this model as a key competitor in motorsport activities for 2005 and beyond. Last year, Subaru Impreza WRX STI spec C ”WR-Limited 2004” was applied for the FIA homologation.

FHI will produce more than 1,000 units of the Impreza WRX STI spec C during 2005, which is the minimum level of production required for Group N classification, and the company is planning to have the vehicle homologated before the 2006 rally season begins.

Major Features of the finely tuned new Impreza WRX STI spec C

* Compared to the Impreza WRX STI, Impreza WRX STI spec C is about 70 kilograms lighter through the adaptation of lighter glass, a trunk lid composed of aluminum, and thinner roof construction.
* Reinforcing braces have been added to the front strut tower on the WRX STI spec C. In addition, the solid bars used to connect the front pillar and upper frame have been replaced by enhanced hollow bars and rigidity of chassis have been improved
* A rear crossbar has been fitted to further improve body rigidity.
* The turbocharger in the Impreza WRX STI spec C uses precise ball bearings in the shaft to reduce friction, thereby offering a smooth and speedy turbo boost and providing ideal engine response.
* A large water reservoir for the intercooler water spray as well as an air-cooled engine oil cooler have been implemented to ensure stable engine performance.

* Applicable 17inch tire specification only

The white really hides the hideousness. This looks like a potentially awesome car except for the ugliness. I gotta wonder who at Subaru thought this would be a good direction to go...

I think they are doing the same thing Nissan and most recently Hyundai have moved away from. They have a compact sedan that is priced the same as other company's midsize sedans and it just makes the value of the car all that much less desirable because of it even with awd.
