Lightbulb 4 Consecutive Uses

The tweeters are catching fire with rumors that the 2012 Nissan GT-R will bring back launch control--presumably in a non-warranty-voiding fashion. Launch control may well come back, but it'll come with some caveats.

A section of what purports to be the 2012 U.S. owner's manual for the Nissan GT-R posted to the NAGTROC forums includes a description of how to use the "R Mode Start Function," Nissan's ostensible name for its launch control. According to 2009GTR.com, the system will only allow 4 consecutive uses to protect the gearbox.

What happens when you do another 4 as soon as the GT-R's computer lets you? How many of these launches will the car tolerate over its lifetime if 5 in a row presumably results in sheared teeth and burnt clutches? What other limitations will Nissan put on its use, assuming the document proves true? We don't know, but given the car's track record, we're going to go with the "we'd rather be surprised than disappointed" outlook.

Whatever shakes out, we're sure the launch mode was used to achieve the sub-3-second 0-60 mph times reported late last year.

How often would you need to use this anyway? Its not meant as a 1/4 miler. I think I'd be 'ok' doing 0-60 in 3.8 on track days.

Yes and no.

I don't see what the big deal is with the launch control feature. If I own this car, I don't see myself using that feature more than maybe the 4 times they say anyhow.

And it's a good thing I suppose anyhow. The temptation to use something like that so that I can get killed at a red light would be too tempting!

I guess I just don't understand the car.

Can you imaging owning a Porche 911 Turbo S, or a Corvette ZR1, and only be able to drive the car hard enough to use launch control 4 times? Those 2 cars are known to take a beating and keep on coming back for more.

The GTR is a glass tiger...seems ferocious, but you can't use it too much because it will break. wtf? Why build a car like that?

Look a the owners manual, it's in one of the GTR threads, with multiple pages for TRANNY rebuild record keeping

Just don't understand this monster car being so fragile that you can only "launch" it 4 times.

A guy with a TTS recently told me that he doesn't use his LC because it takes too long to engage and it's just impractical to use at a light. Nissan should just force you to press a lot of buttons and that will naturally limit its use.

I think its mainly for those who plan to take the GT-R to the drag strip. Typically at a drag strip you'll have more traction than you would on the street, which puts a lot more strain on the drivetrain.

Still doesn't change how I feel about the car I just think it's really lame that there are so many asterisks and small font disclaimers for the GT-R, more so than other performance cars.

Launch control in my GTI is a simple 3 step process....you can set it up in a couple of seconds tops. I can't imagine Audi being that much more difficult.

Turn EPS off.
Move gear select to SPORT
Foot on BRAKE pedal.
Foot on ACCEL pedal....put it on the floor.....revs "stand" at around 3k.
Release BRAKE pedal......tire smoke everywhere.

Simple.

if I wasn't ballin' enough to just go to the dealership and get one with cash and not give a fuck, then I would be so scared to drive this thing. Offcourse I'd be tempted to rip it as much as I can, and I doubt I could control myself from doing so.
But I also think the car is butt ugly so wouldn't buy it in the first place.

According to Motortrend the car has to be driven for 1.5 miles to re-engage the launch control.

^ Well, for perspective, we can razz on the car...but, it sure works in nutty weather. There's a couple of GT-Rs near where I live and even when the weather went to doink, the owners were still driving them.

So, deep-freeze and pile-up of snow aside, this car still works. You can't really do that with most sports cars...I was impressed.

I've never said anything bad about the GT-R's performance.
It's stunning.

However Nissan's B.S. over the past transmission issues leaves me questioning their motives/integrity.

...and there is the other issue......This is the ugliest sports car on the road today!

Well the sad thing is, is that you really don't need to use LC unless you are drag racing, honestly I wouldn't even use LC myself, just drop the hammer and go, 4wd will make up for slight wheel spin.

That shade of blue is nice. But I wish the car itself looked more like this....

btw, didn't know that it got such decent fuel economy. It was rated at 15/21 (I'd expect a lot worse for such a heavy car, though it does have great aerodynamics apparently) but it's been bumped up to 16/23.

I'd love to LC a transmission in one of these to death for fun. (Then write a scathing letter to Nissan about it.)

Post 2012

Nissan’s R35 GT-R is set to sing its final swansong, with production of the 2012 JDM model supposedly set to wrap up a stellar 6 year period, marked by accolades from all over the globe as the car to beat, a world class all round speed king of track and street and the performance buy of the decade. But Nissan isn’t quite done yet and we have some inside news as to what’s going on…

Japanese publication, Best Car Magazine, released some information recently that gives an indication as to what is coming for the next version of the GT-R but there is much to read between the lines.

Among the biggest changes reported, there will be another power increase from factory, with the GT-R set to gain another 30ps ( 30+hp ) over the Spec V model, taking power levels from ~530hp to ~560hp in total.

1 of the other bigger things we have gathered from our sources is that there is going to be a Spec “R” version of the final GT-R that will serve to succeed the Spec V in the showroom and on the circuit.

The mega-quake that rocked all of us here in Japan ultimately disrupted preparations for a Nurburgring test in Germany for the GT-R, with Best Car claiming that Nissan were scheduled to run the final evolution of the model there in April but our sources close to Nissan inform us they had the test slated for the end of May. Equally as interesting is Best Car’s claim that the testing for the car will resume in June but as of this moment, we have been told the testing will resume in Autumn during either September or October. No final dates have been announced.

Among the other significant changes include a slight reduction of 30 ~ 40 kilograms in overall weight plus the addition of a gold engine cover to replace the current red version adorning the Spec V. No doubt the Spec R is going to be the ultimate road going GT-R straight from factory.

Fuel economy is also expected to improve slightly, but if that’s your main concern then the GT-R is probably not the car for you.

We will have updates for you as we receive them.

got to drive a 2012 press car for four days last week before returning it back to Nissan. I tried but couldnt get the R-mode Start to engage. I just happily stuck to just driving it full-bore acceleration when merging onto freeways.

washed it after I got it from Nissan:

and some posed shots...

overall it didnt feel that all different than the 09 model except in acceleration. it just felt it had more oomph. i liked the spiffed interior compared to the 09 - mainly the CF bezels on the dash, the color LCD screen on the tach (previous was all orange) and upgraded seat material.

after I dropped it off back to Nissan in a truck it was carted off to the first magazine publication in line to drive the snot out of it.

software tech but I also do a lot of wedding and freelance photography work for magazines.

a close friend of mine from Nissan called me last week for this one. she's been giving me press cars to drive around for the past five years and i frankly didnt expect the R35. I was one of the first ones to drive the current GT-R before it was released in the US. i didnt beat on it that much, my friend knew i was anal with cars so Ive gotten a chance to sample quite a few from Nissan (and Mitsubishi) before they go on sale.

i really thought she was gonna get me a leaf.

Nice friend. The Leaf would be interesting actually. But that would probably be harder to swing than even a GT-R. At least for now.

And great pics. That color really pops.

lol there's always next year

as a side note, one thing I didn't like about this was that the key fob remained identical to the 2009 one, which is just like every other Nissan key fob - except that it just said GT-R on it. I was kind of hoping they would change it to something a bit different, but it still was the same:

and here is a typical Nissan key fob:

although i do like imprint. My Honda key fob has the silk screened lock/unlock, and well, the unlock is no longer visible due to the thumb rubbing it off after a millionth click or so.

meh. At least they didn't blatantly dig through the parts bin like Chevy did with the Corvette. The $100,000 ZR1 has the same/similar steering wheel as a Cobalt.
