The hills are rumbling to the sound of mud-pluggers - and a new king could be on the way! Lamborghini has designed a mighty 4x4 in response to Porsche's new Cayenne and Mercedes' forthcoming GST.

Our spies report that at the centre of all the activity is Lambo's technical partner, Audi, which is developing a new platform based on VW's potent Touareg. Audi revealed its interest at this year's Detroit Motor Show with the Pikes Peak, a seven-seater concept with impressive on and off-road ability. It's this model, penned by design chief Walter de'Silva, that will influence the Lambo, due in 2006.

Insiders say the car will not be a recreation of the mighty LM002, a limited-edition 450bhp V12 built between 1986 and 1993. Instead, it will offer a mix of tarmac performance and off-road versatility. Engines could include the recently revealed V10, which will debut this March in the Gallardo, mated to a six-speed semi-auto box. The 4x4 system is likely to be developed from VW's Touareg.

The Lambo LM was one bad ass SUV... clearly way ahead of its time.

 

I hope they don't try to make it look like a jacked up Murcieolago (sp?), like Porsche tried to made a jacked up 911.

Lambo also played around with a Jeep-like concept in the 70's called Cheetah... According to the Lamborghini Registry the only known model was accidently destroyed during desert testing in California.

 

Porsche is not part of the group. The others are part of VAG is the accurate statement. Also Seat, Skoda and a few others.

 

I think they started with Tractors and stayed with tractors actually. I am pretty sure they started with tractors but not as sure they never made trucks back then (excluding the LM).

dude, i remember when the LM002 came out....i was a kid...my parents took me to the auto show and I was drooling all over that thing. Well, form behind the ropes, anyway.

It was red. Man, i think that was one of the best experiences of my life

 

I do think that these exorit companies are doing the right thing with those SUVs now. But I am not so sure about the future of this segment. The mainstream SUVs will be improving so fast in the next 10 years, there will be little to be offered by an exotic for double or triple the money. I hope I am wrong.
