Inside Line - 2013 Infiniti JX Bound for 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show
Infiniti Announces JX Luxury Crossover To Join Its Line Next Spring
FRANKLIN, Tenn. (April 19, 2011) – Infiniti has announced an all-new three-row luxury crossover designated the Infiniti JX that will go on sale at its retailers in spring 2012 as a 2013 model.
An exterior sketch of the Infiniti JX suggests a vehicle that pushes the boundaries of what a luxury crossover can be – with signature styling cues of the brand, such as dynamic and elegant line treatments inspired by nature. The brand styling theme continues with a "crescent cut" greenhouse design influenced by the Infiniti Essence concept car. More details will be provided when the Infiniti JX concept is shown at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance this August. The production version will make its global debut at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show in November.
"The all-new Infiniti JX crossover will allow us to continue to expand the Infiniti brand's presence in the Americas," said Carlos Tavares, chairman, Nissan Americas. "In 2010, Infiniti was one of the fastest-growing luxury brands in the United States, and this year we will expand our presence further to Mexico and Panama, followed by Chile in the first half of 2012."
"There aren't a lot of choices for luxury families today. The all-new Infiniti JX is the 7-passenger antidote to the ho-hum luxury crossovers that are out there right now," added Ben Poore, vice president of Infiniti Americas. "The Infiniti JX will have a stunning interior, while offering exceptional seating flexibility, easy access to the roomy third row, plus the latest in-vehicle technology – including next-generation telematics. A fitting addition to our line, it will challenge the status quo in its class."

Infiniti sketches out the roadmap for a seven-passenger crossover.
We appreciate Infiniti’s forthrightness in announcing a sixth model for the American market. The company is using the occasion of the New York auto show to tease us with a sketch of the seven-passenger JX crossover, while a concept will appear at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in August and the production version will bow at the L.A. auto show this November. Glad that’s out of the way. The rest of the details, however, are still murky.
To wit, the watercolors-meet-blur-tool rendering shows a metal-trimmed sidelight opening that sweeps back into a kinked D-pillar, a treatment very similar to the one on Infiniti’s recent Etherea concept. (That same kinky look was also used on Infiniti’s too-hot-for-production Essence concept.) Muscular fenders and flowing body lines match the rest of Infiniti’s current lineup, save for the more blocky QX56. Fortunately for the JX, by way of its two-box shape, it doesn’t appear to suffer from the which-way-is-it-heading problem the Etherea did.
There’s no official word on what will motivate the JX, but trademark filings we uncovered last summer provide some hints. Infiniti has secured the rights to the JX20, JX25, JX25h, and JX30 badges, suggesting a lineup that could include four-cylinders, V-6s, and a hybrid. It’s doubtful that all four would be offered, with the more likely explanation being Infiniti’s desire to safeguard the alphanumerics for possible future use. The hybrid, however, is almost a guarantee, if not from the start.
An all-wheel-drive option also is a given, although the JX may be the first Infiniti in a long while to be based on a front-drive architecture instead of a rear-drive platform. If that is in fact the case, we won’t be surprised if Nissan gets its own version of the large crossover.
We also won’t be surprised when the expected concept looks nearly production-ready. If we don’t know much about the JX, at least we know exactly when we’ll know more. Look for more details at Pebble this summer.

so EX,FX,JX,QX?...and the JX will slot at a Lexus GX level?
Boy, i hope they drop the EX. that thing is worthless. Any potential buyer that spends 5 minutes researching the EX will find out that its sedan counterpart is more versatile. And im sure it shows in sales.

the EX almost takes you by surprise like "oh yeah, they still make that?"
look inside - they have no interior volume.
Passenger volume: EX37 / G37 / Caddy SRX = 88.5 / 96.5 / NA
Cargo volume (seats up): EX37 / G37 / Caddy SRX = 18.6 / 13.5 / 29.8
Cargo volume (seats down): EX37 / G37 / Caddy SRX = 47.4 / NA / 61.1

This is sure to be a great looking crossover. I agree that the EX is an ugly duckling, but I think it should be fixed, not killed. It definitely needs to it's ride height raised, redesigned to compete more favorably with the Audi Q5, BMW X1, and SRX, etc.

People do cross-shop the RX with the MDX and X5, and they have seating for 7.
In most cases the "seating for 7" thing is just a bonus, because those seats are almost always only fit for kids.
My point was that Infiniti does not really have anything that competes with the RX, which is a smashing sales success.

People cross shop the FX w/ RX w/ MDX.
This new 7 seat should go up against the GX

Acura MDX
Maximum cargo capacity: 83.5 cu.ft.
Lexus RX
Maximum cargo capacity: 80.3 cu.ft.
Infiniti FX
Maximum cargo capacity: 62.0 cu.ft.
BMW X5
Maximum cargo capacity: 61.8 cu.ft.
Cadillac SRX
Maximum cargo capacity: 61.1 cu.ft.
It will go up against the GX as well as the RX. But the RX is the sweet spot for sales IMO.
It is supposed to be an R-Class type competitor according to Infiniti, so that makes it even more confusing.
A spokesman said the JX and QX would reflect the relationship between the Mercedes R-class and GL-class – three rows of seats, but one vehicle has an on-road focus, the other an off-roader. The JX sits on a new platform, and isn’t spun-off the current FX architecture.

As we've owned our 09 MDX for the past 18 months, the only time our third row seats hadn't been folded down was when we took delivery. They're so small that they're barely habitable for all but toddlers. (Honestly, Acura should have gone the Nissan Murano route and dumped the third row in favor of additional legroom in what is currently the second row.)
That said, we did cross shop the MDX with the RX (and Murano LE)....but seeing as Acura was pretty much giving the MDX away, it was a no brainer. (Besides, Lexus at the time wasn't willing to negotiate down the price of the RX to compete with our MDX's price.)
Back on topic, it's about time Infiniti inserted an SUV between the FX and QX. I'm definitely interested in a JX25h.

It''s pretty obvious this is an RX competitor right down to the FWD based platform. Size wise it can't be too big if it's going to be powered by the G25 drivetrain (or even smaller 4 cyl). I have to assume one of the other SUVs would have to go.

The FX and the QX are too popular to go. If anything,
FX = RX
JX = GX
QX = LX

So, it looks like this thing is already out testing!

Back in April Infiniti showed a sketch of the upcoming, 2013 Infiniti JX, seven-seat crossover vehicle that will go on sale in the Spring of 2012.
And while we still don't have any engine specs on the Murano / Altima / Maxima platformed vehicle, we do, finally, have spy shots. But based on the platform mates, we can safely assume a 2.5, a 3.5 and some hybrid variants and a CVT. Figure JX25 and JX35 with S or H after it.
The JX is inspired by the Infiniti Essence concept which was shown at the 2009 Geneva Auto Show and the official concept will be shown at the 2011 Pebble Beach Concours. We'll see the production version at the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show.

Infiniti announced earlier this year that it would be adding a 3-row crossover to its fleet, but only released a single teaser image. However, our spy photographers managed to catch up with the CUV while testing, giving us our best look yet at the people-friendly hauler.
Unlike the last time our spies nabbed the JX, we have detailed inside and out photos of the big crossover, which appears to be ready for its late summer debut.
Designated JX, the model will 1st be shown in concept car form at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in August before a production model debuts at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November. Sales should begin in early 2012.
The JX will slot in above the 5-seat FX, which might not be redesigned when it is due in a few years, and below the 7 or 8-seat QX.
The new JX will go up against rivals from Mercedes-Benz (GL-Class), Audi (Q7) and Lincoln (MKT). For the most part, Infiniti appears to be ahead of the curve in offering a true 3-row crossover to luxury buyers. Most rivals have stuck with either 5-seat models or more utility-oriented SUVs like the Lexus GX 460 and Land Rover LR4.
Infiniti will almost certainly continue to offer its QX56, which went on sale barely a year ago. Sales of the boxier QX56 have been brisk, exceeding Infiniti’s expectations despite its hefty fuel consumption.
Nitty gritty
Although Infiniti has shifted to rear-wheel drive in recent years, the JX is expected to ride on Nissan’s front-wheel drive “D” platform. Nissan’s D platform underpins vehicles like the Maxima, Altima and Murano, and will give the JX the ability to offer all-wheel drive.
Infiniti’s 3.7-liter V6 is certainly a possibility for the JX, but a number of trademark filings — including JX20, JX25, JX25h, and JX30 — suggest Infiniti could be considering downsizing. Whatever the case, expect a hybrid model to be part of the JX lineup.
Outside, the JX clearly takes inspiration from the Audi Q7, at least in terms of its overall shape. In fact, at 1st glance, these photos could be of a camouflaged mid-cycle update for the Q7. But the difference is in the details; the JX uses Infiniti’s swoopy styling all around, drawing heavily on themes presented last year when the QX56 was unveiled.
For the 1st time ever, we now have a good look at the JX’s interior. Switchgear is borrowed heavily from other Infiniti models, like the automaker’s unique round heated and ventilated seat knobs and its small leather-wrapped gear lever. The design isn’t as expressive as that found in the company’s midsize M sedans, especially when it comes to a more conservative door panel treatment. But that’s fitting for this segment, which should be fairly high volume for Nissan’s luxury brand.
Look for more details to leak out over the coming months about the upcoming JX crossover.

Teased
We are thick in the between-show-season doldrums, but Infiniti just spiced up the summer with the 1st real shot of its new JX Concept following a teaser sketch revealed in April. Styled as a new 7-seat luxury crossover, the 2013 Infiniti JX is part of the "Power of 7" social media campaign.
The full reveal will come at the 2011 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, and MotorAuthority will be on hand to bring you all the details live from the Monterey Peninsula.
As yet, Infiniti hasn't released any other details on the vehicle, but it will be a 2013 model released in the spring of 2012, with a full production debut at the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show in November. It is expected to be built in the U.S.
The "Power of 7" campaign will see seven new images released on Facebook each Thursday over the next 7 weeks, leading up to the concept's Pebble debut.
