Hyundai Motor To Introduce 'HTRAC' AWD System With All-New Genesis

- Hyundai Motor unveils the name of its all-wheel drive sub-brand 'HTRAC'
- The next-generation Genesis to be the first Hyundai model to adopt the system, with more to follow

Oct. 17, 2013 – Hyundai Motor Company, South Korea's largest automaker, today announced that its 'HTRAC' all-wheel drive system will be made available for the first time on the all-new Genesis, the second generation of Hyundai's first premium rear-wheel drive sedan set to make its world debut in its home market later this year.

The 'H' stands for 'Hyundai' indicating its brand heritage, and 'TRAC' is a shortened form of the word 'Traction,' which represents technical attributes of the all-wheel drive system. The advanced HTRAC system electronically controls torque split between the front and rear axles depending on road and driving conditions, offering greater stability on slippery roads and in corners.

"Hyundai Motor's HTRAC system has secured best-in-class durability and driving performance through strict tests carried out in various locations worldwide, including the famed Nürburgring in Germany, the Yeongam F1 circuit in Korea and in severe winter tests in Europe," said Woong-Chul Yang, Vice Chairman and head of Hyundai Motor Group's R&D Center. "We expect our customers to feel world-class safety and driving performance in the all-new Genesis equipped with the HTRAC system."

Unlike mechanical AWD system with limited torque split between front and rear wheels, Hyundai's HTRAC system allows drivers to select driving modes for a sophisticated and tailored driving experience.

Starting with the second-generation Genesis, Hyundai plans to apply the HTRAC system to more of its models and aims to strengthen its premium, high-tech brand image by continuing brand efforts such as featuring the HTRAC badge on the trunk lid of the Genesis.

Hmm...actually, I see some Infiniti, a little Chrysler, a little Audi, and even a bit of Maserati. Overall, it seems to not be terribly photogenic, but perhaps it'll look better in person.

Either way, it still looks better to me at first glance than the 4G TL did when the first spy shots were revealed so it can't be too bad.

Typically, he rigged the example to prove a point. KBB retail on a '13 Genesis 3.8 with 50,000 miles is $25,500. This car is even less than that.

Really?

I've seen at least 100 RLX already.

Only in the tv commercials though.

Acura bought out so many spots on football games. The tag line was something like Made for Mankind. It was extremely cheesy. No football fans would ever buy such a car. Acura picked the wrong demographic.

Never seen one in person.

Say it ain't so...

Even with "Best in class side mirror aerodynamics. Best in class vent design. Best in class ground clearance. Best in class (if there is one) front wheel drive mid-size flagship."

^^^^^

$329 is not bad at all. Maybe this is the only way to move the new RLX out of dealership lots in order to make way for more of them coming in very soon.

Ive seen a few RLX's on the road and have been largely unimpressed. The headlights look cool though (same for MDX). I need to see that new Genesis in person. AWD would make the car a lot more attractive to me as a replacement for the RL when the time comes. Currently the replacement is likely an Audi A8L

I kinda like it.

We're currently in Seoul, South Korea, checking in on the 2015 Hyundai Genesis at the automaker's headquarters. We can't yet offer any driving impressions, but at least we can share a few renderings of what the new sedan will look like.

As you can see, practically everything above the beltline has been carried over almost untouched from the HCD-14 Genesis Concept we saw earlier this year. The front-end styling, on the other hand, is a complete departure from current Hyundai design language. Note the large, upright grille and the more dynamic headlights and fascia.

There's still no word as to when Hyundai will officially debut the 2015 Genesis, but it won't be a long wait.
