Hyundai: Equus News

From Hyundai blog...

Hyundai has released the first designer sketches of its next generation super luxury sedan. Codenamed VI, this all-new large sized Hyundai sedan will adopt the Equus name from its predecessor and is expected to hit the South Korean Hyundai showrooms in February 2010.

The new Hyundai flagship model is expected to showcase Hyundais most advanced and sophisticated safety, transmission and engine technologies. Equus will benefit from latest safety equipment that will include goodies such as the second-generation Vehicle Stability Management System (VSM2), a Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS) and a Pre-Safety Seatbelt System which on detecting an imminent front-end collision, automatically reels-in the safety belts to maximize the safety of the occupants.

The 2010 Hyundai equus is also believed to be the first Hyundai vehicle to receive an in-house developed 8-speed automatic gearbox. The brand-new Hyundai tranny will be mated to the award-winning 4,6L V8 engine. About six months later, Hyundai also plans to roll-out even more potent engine unit with the displacement of 5,0L and approximately 400+ horsepower. Some rumours also indicate that both engines will also feature a gasoline direct injection technology and cylinder deactivation technology.

The 2010 Hyundai Equus -VI will replace the aging Equus sedan, that hit Korean market in 1998 and was the first Korean-made vehicle to feature gasoline direct engine technology (GDI) and a V8 powerplant. The old Equus sedan was a front-wheel-drive vehicle, while the 2010 Hyundai VI is adopting a new rear-wheel-drive architecture.

Very very nice.

I wonder if Hyundai America offers any entry-level marketing jobs.. because it seems to me that Hyundai is becoming a key player in its industry.. finally.

Isn't Pure Adrenaline working for Hyundai? It'd be great, if I can get some inside information.

weird, the hyundai dealer around here was the first to close down. Didn't even get a chance to see the new models in person.

It's an okay design. Unfortunately, it's not original. The rear lamps are Maxima clones; the profile flares are a direct rip off of the Buick Invicta's (and production next gen Lacrosse) Sweep Spear design... the front end screams MB S-Class, and the overall greenhouse profile is the lifted from the very coupe-like Jag XF. Wow... again, the design is fine. I just wish Hyundai would try something original.

front end looks like the last gen LS. but it does remind me of MB a little.

anyway, it's not even gonna look like this anyway. i bet it's gonna be like genesis with bigger grill and addition of that side profile, which i think would look sick if they can be well executed.

i personally think it looks more like elantra's curvy lines with little bit of azera line. I even see little bit of gen coupe lines

it's evident that hyundai wants to have 'character lines' in all of their cars not sure they share the similar design language though.

Does that mean you've FINALLY put down the bong!?

...But honestly, for as much shit as I and everyone else on here gives you, I really don't care if Hyundai steals design ideas from up-market luxury cars as long as they make their cars just as desirable (from a performance/luxury standpoint) and reliable at a significantly reduced price...

...with that said, I'd still rock an LS over this.

The character lines on the front do not flow at all with the rear...

That genesis coupe looks great though.

I was able to give you guys an early sneak preview on the Genesis siblings.

Unfortunately, I got nothing on the Equus. For one, it's intended for the domestic market only (for now), plus I haven't been to Korea in over a year.

Maybe on a next new model. Sorry!

P.S. We do have two current generation Equus (Equi?) on site here, specially imported from Korea. I've driven/ridden in them and they are fantastic cars, even by today's standards. The new Equus should be everything Hyundai promises it to be then some.

Post First Photos Surface

From WCF...

Some of the first images of the upcoming Hyundai Equus have made their way to the web.

These photos are not even in focus but already we can see Hyundai has nicked some styling cues from BMW. Just look at the multi-spoked wheels pattern and rear lighting design. Okay, so there's a little Mercedes-Benz in there too.

Well, in an earlier rendering of the Equus you almost see more Merc than Hyundai. It must be good news for the German premium brands that their Asian competitors have no ideas but to rip them off on design.

The 2010 Equus will be Hyundai's flagship model. It will be based on the Korean automaker's new rear-wheel drive architecture derived from the Genesis platform.

The new Equus will be driven by a 4.6 liter V8. A 5.0 liter V8 with about 400 hp will follow later. According to Hyundai Blog, both engines will likely feature direct-injection technology which comes from Hyundai's new Theta engine line.

Hyundai will also be loading the Equus with cabin technologies such as Lane Departure Warning System and a Pre-Safety Seatbelt System which can tighten a belt split-seconds before an impact.

The Equus will arrive in South Korean dealerships in February of 2010. A US launch will follow short afterwards.

Ouch, lost in translation. Those rear "hips" suddenly don't look so sexy as they did in the drawing.

It's because they are soft and boring, not sharp and well defined like in the drawing.

Nice. I am very impressed. Hyundai has had some great ideas lately. This looks even better than the Genesis.

IMHO:The RL has some heavy hitters in it's group(5 series, E class, M of Infiniti, and GS of Lexus) Acura/Honda felt like we'll just put our "new recruits" (new hires) to give the RL "a facelift" well in the process they "fudged it up" pretty good. you don't put your "new recruits" on your 50-60 grand car. let them cut their teeth on Civics, and Fits.

In order to slide backwards you have to have had some advanced styling. Honda/Acura never had that. The current sharp headlights/penta-grille are nothing more than sharpened Pontiac designs from the 90s.
