Believe me, I do blame the stupid CAFE legislation for all of this. IMO hybrids are stupid, useless, pieces of junk that are only usually purchased by anal-retentive types who want other people to know how they are "saving the planet" for all the rest of us oil-swilling savages. Puh-lease. Let the free market decide the fate of all this eco-crap. Let the manufacturers build whatever they want and see what actually sells. Get the stupid government out of the car business and everything will work itself out.....

So from what I gathered from that video, the CR-Z is indeed mediocre. The interior's pretty nice though.

So other than the 6-speed fantastic Honda manual transmission....the 5th gear vid breaks it down as neither a good hybrid nor sportscar......GREAT!!!!

Sadly, I couldn't care enough to even watch the video. Last time I watched a video of the CR-Z going around Suzuka it was very boring.

pretty much what we've been saying

But that interior is pretty good though. I started to hate Honda interiors because it seems like they devote attn to the Acura brand and literally throw the leftovers to Honda cars. CR-Z's interior seems like high quality materials (or at least, better than average for this price range), logical design and not much of that cheap plastic metal that Honda seems to be in love with.

Agree 100%. My dad's 2009 Accord EX Coupe is nothing but cheap plastic on the inside. The interior was one of the main reasons I didn't consider buying one when looking for a new car. And how the hell anyone at Honda could say CR-Z and Elise in the same sentence with a straight face is beyond me.

Well, all he really says is that it's 'competent' at everything it does but nothing really stands out, whether it's performance or fuel economy. He praised the gearbox (no-brainer), the interior and the cheap price, but the driving experience clearly leaves more to be desired.

I agree. But that doesn't mean that the car IS mediocre. Perhaps when compared to our overblown expectations...

I expected about equal to the Civic Si performance wise. If that was an overblown expectation than I obviously have to lower my expectations (immensely) when it comes to Honda.

at overblow expectations.

Perhaps we should expect hampsters in wheels for engine power?

Seriously now.....the expectations for a sport compact hatch are not overblown.

See Mazda speed3, GTI, Civic Si...etc. for expectations.

In all fairness, Honda never marketed it as a sport compact hatch, they marketed it as a sports-hybrid. They are two vastly different niches.

You say that as if the sport hybrid market has a clear definition. To the best of my knowledge it doesn't, since the CR-Z is the first of its kind. Unless you know otherwise?

I said it earlier in this thread or somewhere in here that the Si should have been the minimum performance target. Its not as if the Si is the fastest or best handling sport compact out there. But we can all agree its competent. Just my we'll see what sales say.

In my mind, the word Hybrid is the polar opposite of Sport Compact.

They why bother throwing the word 'sport' in there like Honda did?

Call it a 2 door hybrid. Or better yet, Insight Coupe.

Come on now. You are trying to tell me that Honda designed a vehicle that was Jack of all trades - Master of none?!?!?

There is no Sports-Hybrid class.....unless you are referring to the Lexus GS450h....now that is a Sports-Hybrid if I ever saw one. This CR-Zed.....not so much.

You'd think with the electric motor they'd be able to get at least more power than the 1.8L they have in the current Civic (not the Si). In fact, it makes less.

Oh, and at your avatar, dom.

From page 1.

Honda will present the "Small Hybrid Sports Concept" at the Geneva Motor Show in March. The debut follows Toyota's launch of FT-HS Hybrid Sports Concept in January.

"Honda Small Hybrid Sports Concept represents Honda's proposal for a future hybrid model," the company said in a statement. "The Concept demonstrates a unique fusion of advanced hybrid technology and fun-to-drive sports car characteristics. The Small Hybrid Sports Concept, which has been designed by Honda R&D Europe based in Offenbach, Germany explores the idea that a car can have a low environmental impact yet still deliver all the driving enjoyment expected of a compact sports car."
The Si is a compact sports car is it not? I'm not going to dismiss that maybe I expected too much, who knows. Point I'm trying to make is that I don't think it was unreasonable to expect Si level performance. I don't think any of us had overblown expectations. I truly believe Honda set out to make a Compact hybrid sports car and simply fell short of their own original expectations.

I think Honda is running scared of how to market a hybrid.

Ever since the Accord Hybrid flop, they can't seem to figure out how to come up with a Hybrid that will sell.

They are all over the board.

Insight produces less MPG than its competitor....that didn't work.....so when it came to the CR-Z...they focues more on hybrid econ-mpg than sport.

....but they still try to market it as sport?

Honda, you baffle me.

Cant blame Honda for making this car. Im sure we are going to see lots of Hybrid everythings in the future; someone had to make the first hybrid "sports" car. Their making Hydrogen cars, Hybrids sedans and now hybrid sports cars...like they said on TG, Honda is saving the world lol

To be first but not the best, that's not always the best course. I do believe we have a case study on such a phenomenon, it's called Acura.

So they should just wait for someone else to do it (even though they clearly think this is where the market is heading) and then copy them or try to improve their idea?

Thats why I used Quotation marks. I guess its more of a "2 door hatchback coupe thing with decent handling but slow as hell hybrid"

Also dont forget there is no such thing as a sub $20k sports car.

(maybe the Civic Si, but that depends on your definition)

No, they should be the first and make a very good sporty compact hybrid, which from all objective measures, the CR-Z is not. It is neither a gas sipper that the term 'hybrid' brings to mind, nor is it sporty.

Now for some news that nobody here will likely care about. The first ship load of CR-Zs are en route from Japan and is due into the Port of Portland next week. Not sure if I will get to drive one but if anybody is interested, I'll try to snap a few pics.

Sad isn't it. Although I'm not the type of customer Honda is aiming at with this car. I just can't care about a car that's questionably sporty, questionably fuel efficient and a 2 seater to top it off.

Can't wait to see how it sells.
