What other automotive company's designer has the visibility of Bangle? Before Bangle, BMW was known as a driver's car. With him, BMW now overshadows others in automotive design innovations. He brings visibility to BMW like no other.

Personally, LCI 3 series looks good and so do X5 and X6. 1 series looks OK. I strongly dislike the E65 7 series and the X3. I don't really care for the old Z4 and 6 series.

I of course purchased a current 5 series, which I think is the best BMW design, until the new Z4 comes along.

There are some good articles about Bangle's place in BMW, and the auto industry in general, to put things into perspective:

I thought he designed the current 5....so he became head of design with only 2 cars under him? One was just adding a hard top

E60/61: David Arcangeli (DesignworksUSA) This is the dude that can suck a giant fat nut.

All I know is that the 02-05 7 (E65, E66) didn't look that great, but the 2006-2008 E65 and E66 are pretty nice looking. Sporty and elegant.

Post Bangle Left BMW Over Project i

Speculation from WCF...

An explanation for the resignation of Chris Bangle from BMW has appeared on the Internet. Information gathered from the BMWblog.com points to a difference of opinion regarding the design direction of Project i. Project i which has been given the go-ahead by the BMW board of directors, is about "new car and mobility concepts" meant to explore transportation solutions for the biggest cities. This important project is still in its infancy in motor industry terms but the infancy stage is when things design-related get created, discussed and approved. It seems Bangle had a clash of ideas with BMW CEO Dr Norbert Reithofer, Chief of Research & Development Dr Klaus Draeger and his own protégé Adrian van Hooydonk in as far as Project i was concerned.

The clash was about whether Project i would fall under one of the three existing BMW brands (excluding Motorrad and M) or be serviced under a brand new label. Each of these brands - BMW, MINI and Rolls Royce has its own design language. Bangle then decided to fall on his sword rather than take responsibility for a design strategy he did not approve.

The BMW board tried to convince him to stay, even offered him other positions at BMW. One of these positions was that of Design Director at Designworks USA where van Hooydonk once plied his trade. All this was in vain. He had made up his mind to leave. However he will still work with BMW in his new personal design initiative.

A new era of design has now been ushered at BMW in which final direction will come from Adrian van Hooydonk. Because lead times are counted in years, van Hooydonk's style will only be seen in the next 6 or 7 years time. But his concepts like the CS Concept can already be appreciated.

I did not care for his designs at first but they've grown on me. The real problem with most radical and/or modern car designs is that within five or six years, they look outdated or strange. My friend has a 1995 525i (E34 body) that still looks great and that body came out in 1989! I can guarantee you the current 5-Series won't look nearly as good in 2025.

Whatever comes of this, I wish him and BMW the best.
