on the m3/m5 forums, the consensus was true enthusiasts were pissed that the car didnt come with a manual, so they decided to add it, since people though of smg as an auto, and MB does a better job of it that bmw

Not sure about your last statement since MB doesn't even have a Sequential Manual Gearbox in any car.

This is AWESOME news if it can be verified.
All the report on the M5 that I have read say that it will be SMG only.
I don’t see myself buying an M5 in the near future, but this shows that there’s hope of the V8 M3 coming with a manual.
That car is a definite possibility for my next ride.

With the M5, the engine is one thing......styling is another.
I don't love the 6series, but would get an M6 over the M5.
Regardless, after the M3 goes... that will be enough of BMW for awhile.

I sat in the M5 at the Detroit car show. It was not very impressive inside or out. It didn't have the presence of the old M5. Another telling aspect was that it didn't have a large crowd around it, and I was able to sit in it without waiting on a line. Most performance cars had LONG times. For example, the existing M3 had a 3x larger crowd around it.
Here's a few pics:
Best part of the M5 - Beautiful engine:
Interior = yuck
Skidplate = cool

I've never seen somebody so happy to see a car he'll NEVER OWN equipped with a manual transmission

ok
heres some math:
(based on opinions and reviews)
mb auto > bmw auto
without a bmw mt, some people view:
mb auto == bmw smg
therefore a lot of people looking to spend that kind of cash might go to mb for the e55, especially given the trouble smg USED To have...yes the early smg's had issues, but hey how many people have had a 7-speed smg? exactly...precieved consumer confidence

You obviously have no clue what the SMGII is all about.

As for your math, anyone who views SMG== MB auto cares more about cruising than driving, which means they aren't M's demographic anyway. The SMG sux for going slow but is unmatched for going really fast, but for many not as much fun as a three pedal car.
Oh and Juan Pablo and Ralf said their 7 speed SMG worked just fine behind their V10s, however Kimi called and said he has a few warranty issues with his car...
As to the post that the SMG will be quicker than a three pedal manual car it depends, it will be faster on a road course but in a straight line from stop the manual will be faster as it allows for a less clutch friendly launch. It remains to be seen if BMW cuts the balls of the Federal LC (launch control) as they did with the E46 M3. In the US it launches at 1800, I get the lowest 60' times launching my 3 pedal car M3 at 4,500, at 1800 you bog, if we get the Euro version for the M5 (assuming it stays as high as has been reported) the 60' times will be as good as all but the best manual clutch launchers. From a roll the difference between a SMG and 3 pedal car (given a solid stick driver) will be a non-issue. Pesonally my time on the track in a SMG M3 has taught
me it is AWESOME on the track but I would get a three pedal M3 to drive the rest of the time.

Still undecided on which one.... but now that a manual is confirmed for the M5, I'm leaning more towards the bimmer even if the SMGII is quicker. Not sure if I'll be able to resist the instant gratification of the #2 spot even if it is an SMGII though. Probably get caught in the heat of the moment...
I am #1 at my dealer, I put my name on the list last October but will likely sell my spot since I am 90% sure I am either going to get a Carrera S or 355. The friend that has the 355 I am looking at getting wants the slot and is willing to reduce the price for the slot. IF the manual becomes a 100% reality I may rethink this, if it isn't available at launch I will probably sell my slot and just jump back in when it is offered.
