I hope it looks better than the pics, reasonable pricing aside - being 350lbs lighter than the 3 with the same engine will = teh new bimmer hotness.

North American press photos look great. This car will obviously be a hit with the sport compact crowd.

Car and Driver says:

"If all of this has you salivating, you’re not alone. We’re huge fans of simplicity and lightness—thank you Colin Chapman—so we’re hoping the small 1-series can scratch an itch that hasn’t really been filled by a BMW since the 1980s-era E30 3-series. (Speaking of scratching itches, can we get the Euro-market 120d or 123d's diesel four-cylinder, too? Please?) BMW is playing keep-away with price info, but expect a 128i to start around $27,000 and a 135i to require an extra $5000 to $6000."

I'm not looking to buy a coupe any time soon, but I'm sure thousands will lineup to snatch the cheapest BMW, and even 128i will probably be a very rewarding driving experience. So 335i coupe may lose some sales, and it will definitely eats some of infiniti G37's lunch.

Acura is supposedly planning a TSX coupe; it better not come out with a 4 cylinder.

Turbo may be OK, but it'll probably need SH-AWD, and it'll be heavy.

the interior - I have to shake my head. feels all twisted and ill proportioned.

I really don't care if it's "butt ugly"... if it's around 3000lbs, RWD, a 2+2 hardtop coupe, and under 30K, I'm seriously interested...

I'm thinking 128i, with xenon headlights and sports package. No sunroof, no navi, and no other BS... (oh, and heated seats too :gheylaugh: )

I saw one of the hatches on the road today. Didn't catch the plates, probably from Mexico if they sell them there. Neat looking car.

I'd prefer the hatch actually. The plainer, the better - stealth speed ftw.

All the esentials look/sound good to me. I'd like to see pictures of this thing in Montego blue though, I'm tired of that redish orange color...

People in the U.S. want a BMW for all around performance or its brand recognition; practicality is not in the equation. No way the 3dr or 5dr hatch would do well here.

A 1 series sedan would be too small for the backseat and is almost pointless, especially given the growing size of the average American.

BMW has the right marketing people and they know what most of us want.

I think style comes into the equation too and I prefer that 5/3 door hatch look with this car (it doesn't come in a 3 anyway, right?)

The back end looks alright to me. I just wish I could see it next to a 3 series coupe to see just how much smaller it really is.

BMW hasn't announced US pricing yet... I have a feeling that they might not release that info until right before the sales begin since the pricing depends on the exchange rate of the euro vs. the dollar...

So all we have is rumors and WAGS (wild ass guesses)...

Most beleive that the 128i will start above what the MINI is priced at and below the 328... I'm thinking under $30K for the 128i.

Then $5-6K more for the 135i (mentioned in this thread) gets you into the mid 30's and with options, probably upper 30's...

It's really going to be interesting to see where the pricing ends up... if it's closer to the 3 series some people just might opt for the 3 series instead, and if it's alot cheaper, then the 1 series will scrub sales away from the 3 series... Any losses on 3 series sales will probably be made up in future BMW sales tho'. Bmw will hook the younger buyers and as they age, they'll just buy up the model ladder as their income increases.

Video with sound: http://www.autospies.com/video/AutoS...-1-Series-241/

Crappy youtube sized video and the wrong aspect ratio, but it has sound ...

As I see better pics of the car, I like it more and more. The "character lines" on the rear look really attractive to me, and the shape of the doors too.

A 50/50 weight ratio, lightweight RWD coupe, with ample horsepower / torque is an extremely attractive package to me. I was considering the G37 Coupe (too heavy), new Accord Coupe (FWD), and possibly the new TSX Coupe (probably FWD biased) -- but this 135i really has everything I want in a car, hopefully at a reasonable pricetag.

See my post from yesterday with a link to the hi-res pics

I'm excited about a lightweight RWD coupe too... and if I don't buy a 1-series I'm hoping that it sells well enough that some other manufacturers make competing products..

Oops! Too late to edit now. Yeah, I've been looking to replace my '03 TL-S with something smaller/lighter and more fun for awhile now. The EVO/STi is always a choice, but I don't really like the "boy racer" reputation. For a little bit more, this seems to really fulfill a niche market that a lot of people have been waiting for. Like you said, hopefully other manufacturers will follow suit.

This is partly why I've never bought one. I'm afraid it will start an unhealthy (for my wallet) addiction
