BMW: 1-Series News
From AutoExpress
BMW is set to muscle in on the booming hatchback market with its groundbreaking new 1-Series, seen here in prototype form for the first time. The car sits between the MINI and 3-Series and will be the first genuine affordable BMW since the death of the much-loved '02' range, which ran from 1966 to 1977.
While the German firm describes this model – dubbed CS1 – as a concept, bosses admit that the final production version will look virtually identical to the radical show car. The compact four-seater cabrio will be the star of next week's Geneva Motor Show. And although the finished machine will be a five-door hatch, much of the CS1's design and engineering will make it to production.
The latest creation of BMW's controversial chief designer Chris Bangle, the CS1 combines many of the ideas seen on previous concepts such as the X-Coupé. It also marks a departure from BMW's early design proposals, conceived before the MINI became a fully integrated BMW project – and it's guaranteed to raise a few eyebrows. The side flanks are concave and form distinctive creases at the top and bottom of the panels, while the sill line dips away from the front wheel, before kicking up to meet the rear bumper. Conventional it isn't.
And if you think the outside is wacky, take a look at the CS1's interior. Through the use of clever self-supporting surfaces, many elements of the dashboard appear to float on top of the main aluminium rail which runs the width of the cabin. A further aluminium strut divides the cockpit lengthwise, although much of this is covered in neoprene – a material used to make wetsuits. The CS1 also boasts iDrive, the controversial cabin operating system which recently debuted in the company's new flagship 7-Series. This controls all the car's major interior fun-ctions through a computer mouse-like wheel located behind the gearstick.
Power will come from the company's new 1.8-litre VALVETRONIC four-cylinder unit – built at the Hams Hall plant in the West Midlands. This ultra-clean petrol engine develops 115bhp, is mounted longitudinally and drives the rear wheels via a standard manual box or the innovative SSG (Sequential Sports Gearbox) transmission.
The project had looked in doubt when BMW was juggling its commitments with Rover. However, after the ailing British concern was sold in 1999, the 1-Series – first mooted in the mid-Nineties – finally got the go-ahead. It will hit UK showrooms in 2005 and is expected to cost £12,000-£16,000.

BMW made an M1 from 1978-80. it was a mid mounted Inline 6 that put out 277 bhp. 0-60 in 5.4 seconds. great car for the time. it looked alot like the defunct 8 series. that would be awesome if they updated that "supercar" look and tacked it on with a mid engine that produced like that.
BUT.. they probably wont and just make the normal 1 series look more aggressive.
that'd be great if they made an affordable M (affordable for german car standards). with 240 horses and iDrive it would be a HUGE seller depending on looks and price.
If any pics are released of the 5 door hatch please post em, the pic up there is good but doesn't give the full idea of the style.
(better not be another letdown like the 318)

Let me guess, only $25,999 and they'll throw in the passenger seat for only $2500! What a DEAL! Oh you wanted the radio too? Okay, just check the box next to the radio option for $1500.

Latest 1 Series and next gen. 3 Series update
1-Series News (10/06/03)
The latest 1-Series codenamed E81 has been caught testing on UK roads, to help hone the chassis on UK roads. The new "Golf" rival hatchback is scheduled for it's premiere in autumn 2004. BMW hope to sell 30,000 a year in the UK with the starting price of £15,000. Prototypes will soon be decending on Welsh roads so that engineers can fine tune the chassis as BMW predicts the UK will be one of it's biggest markets. Four cylinder engines from the UK's Hams Hall plant iin Birmingham will be mounted North-South channeling power to the rear wheels. It will share some components with the forthcoming 3-Series including the suspension with MacPherson struts up front & trapezoidial link rear axle. Extensive use of Alluminium will help it achieve it's target weight of 1150kg for the 3-door hatch version. It will measure 4150mm long & should have a wheelbase of 2650mm. Boot space is said to be 270 litres with split rear seats to enlarge it's capacity to 1000 litres. The 1-Series will have wraparound lights at front & rear, with convex & concave body surfaces & strong shoulder line along it's flanks. Traditional kidney grill & the famous "Hofmeister kink" in the C-pillar are certainties to ensure it stands out. Base engine is the 1.6 litre up to 2.0 litre M2 (2-door variant) with 220 Bhp high-reving engine to nearly 9000 Rpm which should cover 0-60 mph in 5.0 secs, all manual engines will have 6-Speed gearbox & even a diesel engine will feature. Other features are likely to be carried over from the new 5-Series, like it's "tonned-down" iDrive & Active steering will be a £800 option. Production is due to start next summer at the Regensburg plant in Germany, with BMW hoping to build 180,000 units a year.
3-Series Touring (03/06/03)
Next generation 3-Series Touring code named E90 been seen in shake-down tests in Germany., with more style & space than it's predecessor. The new Touring will feature a slide-out boot floor for easy loading, power operated tailgate to accompany split opening. Prices likely to start at £21K (UK) when on sale a year after the Saloons launch in late 2005. The new E90 is to feature the famous "Hofmeister" kink in the C-Pillars to match the 5-Series along with scaled down versions of it's wrap-around headlamps. Engines will feature the usual four & six pot valvetronic varible vavle timing & diesels, with a possible range topping 3.6litre V8 producing 270Bhp the first since the 2002 Turbo was produced in 1974. The Coupe arrives in late 2006 along side it's new coupe/cabrio with folding roof design – already patented in Munich. The niche models are likely to get the 4-Series tag, meaning the next generation Motorsport model could be named the M4. With the arrival of the new 1-Series the new 3-Series can be bigger than it's out going predecessor to boost cabin & boot space. New aluminium chassis & component sharing with the new 1-Series in particular the MacPherson strut & multi-link rear suspension. All new 6-speed gearboxes will be available in both manual & automatic versions. Other high-tech gismos to include the active steering option, electronic-hydraulic braking, adaptive headlamps, anti-lock, DSC-T traction control & CBC cornering brake control.

Still looks like a short 3 series, which is exactly what it is. I'm sure there will be as many of these running around as there are 2dr MB C230's.

Well, styling aside...it's going to be a decent car and will be much better than the GTI. The question is, is that really the market BMW wants to be associated with? I guess so.

bmw should really change their market stratagy.
we really want to avoid a 318 again.
they should drop the 2.5 and 3.0 liter engines into this, make it high priced, and just as nice, if not nicer then the 3 series.
image = everything
also, i would DEFINTILY tap that 3 door sedan thingy

In that last pic, the 2 door coupe (or 3 door i guess) doesnt look bad at all, kinda like an update of the old Z3 coupe/Mcoupe which is still my favorite BMW of all time.

BMW to pit upcoming 1 Series against Accord, Camry with mid-$20s price
BMW to pit upcoming 1 Series against Accord, Camry with mid-$20s price
By DIANA T. KURYLKO | Automotive News
BMW's new 1 Series will be priced in the mid-$20,000 range when it goes on sale in 2005, a price point that will put it in the heart of the volume-sedan segment dominated by the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry.
Tom Purves, CEO of BMW of North America LLC, said the U.S. market will get only one body style of the 1 Series - not a hatchback - and two engines, most likely six cylinder.
Potential buyers include owners of the Volkswagen Jetta and similar cars "who aspire to own a BMW," he said at the Frankfurt auto show last week.
"We aren't getting completely carried away saying it will be a home run success," Purves said. "The issue is it needs to perform like a BMW, and it needs to perform like a BMW Americans will like. There is a reason we don't sell four-cylinder BMWs in America."
CEO Helmut Panke said the 1 Series will be nearly identical in size to the 2002 - the predecessor to the 3 Series.
"It will pick up where the 2002 started 35 years ago," he said. "It won't be cheap and will be the only rear-drive car of its size."
The new vehicle will be built alongside the 3 Series, and will share up to 40 percent of its larger sibling's components, executives said.
The two vehicles will not share a platform, but 80 percent of the production processes will be the same. That will enable production in the same assembly plants - four in Germany and one in South Africa, said Burkhard Goeschel, BMW board member for r&d and purchasing.
"The 1 and the 3 Series have a different length, wheelbase, width and A-pillar position, but they can be produced in the same five factories," he said. "We are totally flexible in being able to change volume of all 1- and 3-Series derivatives."
The move to common processes began with the 5 Series and 6 Series. Those vehicles have about 60 percent commonality in manufacturing processes and share about 30 percent in components on a parts basis - more in value added because the engines and gearboxes are common, Goeschel said.
BMW is designing the 1- and 3-series model ranges to accommodate up to 10 body styles, said Goeschel. He would not specify which body styles each range will get, but the large number of derivatives suggests several body styles of the 1-series are possible.
The current 3 Series comes as a sedan, coupe, convertible, hatchback and station wagon.
The ability to build so many vehicles on one assembly line exceeds even what the most flexible Japanese makers such as Honda can do, Goeschel said.
"The main goal is to have differentiation by keeping commonality in processes," Goeschel said.
There is some commonality of the body in white, but the two interiors are different. Tooling will cost less, development costs are lower and the time-to-market is faster because of this side-by-side development, said Goeschel.
The 1 Series goes into production at the end of 2004 and the 3 Series replacement a year later.
