Audi: A5, S5, RS5 News

Under the bonnet is the same naturally aspirated 4163cc V8 that powered the old RS4 and is currently found in the R8, but Audi’s Quattro GmbH division – responsible for all of Ingolstadt’s RS models – has squeezed an extra 30bhp out of the engine. That means the high-revving, direct-injection 4.2-litre V8 produces 444bhp at 8250rpm, along with 317lb ft from 4000 to 8000rpm.
That power is sent through a seven-speed S-tronic gearbox to all four wheels, and with the Launch Control system engaged it’s enough to propel the 1725kg coupe to 62mph in 4.6 seconds, before powering the RS5 on to its 155mph limiter. Of course, if you hand over a little extra cash, Audi will increase the top speed to 174mph.
1725 kg... It's heavier that we thought....

Absolutely gorgeous vehicle and with plenty of power while still NA......Very impressive Audi.
The thing that surprised me the most was the announcement of a different centre Differential and it appears they may have electronic torque vectoring to all wheels while also having the mechanical torque diff in the rear. Is this the next generation of Quattro and does anyone else have any more info on it.

Price in Germany for a RS5 is 80,000 Euros.
VAT is 19% so the pre-tax price is 64,800 Euros.
Using the conversion rate of 1.35:1 (Euro to Dollar)
That comes to $87,480.
Now, say Audi figures there's no way they'll sell any RS5s over $80k (just go with me on this) ... That means they'd lose $7,480 per car if they sold them here.
Again, what do I know. I'm just saying the logic is similar even if the numbers aren't.

That doesn't mean they'd lose $7,480 per car, that just means that they'd earn that much less. I know I'm just putting it in a different way but it is important to clarify. But such is the case for any car built in Europe or another country with a higher value of money than the US dollar. Yet they still sell their cars in the US. Not to mention some auto manufacturers have sold some cars at a loss just so they can get more recognition for their name.
So yes, they'd lose $7800 a car in profit here in the states.
At the end of the day the point is that they probably will find it financially untenable. When they do the crash testing and DOT certification and whatever else they have to do, they may end up doing the math and deciding it's not worth it.
But if they went through all that for a $180k R8 V10, why not the RS5?

Well yeah, that's a good point. It doesn't cost them 68k euros to build it.

looks incredible!
The next über-model from Audi`s Quattro GmbH division won't officially debut in Geneva for another week, but images from its brochure have already made their way onto the web. The RS5 coupe will no doubt take the performance of Audi's B8 platform to levels beyond the much-loved and departed RS4. The RS5 is expected to get the 7-gear s-tronic dual clutch transmisson as an option and will be powered by the naturally aspirated 4.2 Liter V8 FSI engine with an output of at least 450 BHP.

Don't know if this is an April Fool's joke or not. Hopefully they aren't teasing us, not that I could afford to buy one.

A new report suggests that Audi is leaning towards bringing the well-received RS5 coupe to the U.S., going against former plans to keep the performance coupe in Europe. The RS5 would become the first RS-car to make it stateside since the RS4 Cabriolet saw its U.S. demise in 2008.
According to a report from Automobile, inside sources have suggested that the German luxury and performance automaker is rethinking its plans of keeping the RS5 in Europe – instead considering a U.S. debut in the near future.
The RS5 debuted at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show, and as Leftlane witnessed in person, the hotly styled coupe drew quite a crowd of onlookers with its sleek lines. The RS5 is powered by a massive 450 horsepower, 317 lb-ft of torque 4.2-liter V8, matched with a new Audi quattro all-wheel drive system that deployed a crown-gear differential.
Should the RS5 make it to the U.S., Automobile’s sources suggest it would make it to showrooms near you by the summer of 2011.
