The Biggest New-Car Busts Of 2014 - Forbes
The Biggest New-Car Busts Of 2014
The auto business is ending 2014 on a roll, with sales volumes expected to once again reach pre-recession rates. Manufacturers are poised to deliver an estimated 16.8 million new cars and trucks to consumers in the U.S. this year, according to Kelley Blue Book, which would be the most recorded since 2006 and within reach of the industry’s all-time high of 17.8 million units in 2000.
Not to be a Grinch about it, but while the proverbial rising tide is said to lift all boats, some models continue to take on water, being chronically overlooked and left to languish in dealers’ inventories with sales sputtering like an outboard motor running on fumes.
A few are vehicles that haven’t been redesigned in so long they’ve long been eclipsed by more recently introduced or redesigned models, or are stuck at the bottom of a dwindling or limited segment. Other more recently introduced models have either yet to find their stride in a highly competitive marketplace, or are just plain duds that resulted from an automaker’s misread of fast-changing trends and consumer tastes.
We scoured the most recent new-vehicle sales reports from major automakers to isolate what, by our measurements, are the dregs of the automotive business for 2014. For the most part we gave a pass to models that historically sell in limited numbers, as well as those which recently debuted or were discontinued this fall as part of the 2015 model-year changeover.
On the plus side, any of these cellar dwellers should be offered with deep discounts as dealers attempt to clear their excess inventories in year-end sales promotions, with the sweetest new-car deals usually forthcoming on December 31. Happy New Year, everybody.
1. Cadillac ELR
2. Acura RLX: This is another case of high hopes fallen far short. The full-size flagship RLX luxury sedan debuted for the 2014 model year to replace the underperforming RL. Unfortunately, while a nice enough ride in its own right and loaded with technology, the RLX still lags the competition in terms of its conservative styling and lack of a V8 engine. Acura recently added a Sport Hybrid version to the line that leverages the car’s 3.5-liter V6 engine with dual electric motor/generators to produce V8-like power, but sales continue their downward spiral. At just 3,180 units delivered through November, deliveries are down by 28.4 percent on the year.

Honda delays Legend launch in Japan to reassess radar, hybrid tech | New and Used Car Reviews, Research & Automotive-Industry News & LeftLaneNews
Honda is reportedly delaying the JDM launch of its Legend sedan to reassess several potential quality concerns.
The same model encountered a few quality issues following its launch in the US market as the Acura RLX, with three quick recalls to fix problems with the headlights, seat belts and suspension. The Sport Hybrid edition also faced a lengthy delay, allegedly related to a technical issue with the new all-wheel-drive technology.
The company is now pushing the Legend's Japan launch into late February, the second such delay after an initial expectation of a fall launch, according to a statement to Bloomberg.
Spokesman Atsushi Ohara further notes that engineers are taking a closer look at the Legend's collision-avoidance sensor system and its hybrid powertrain. It is unclear if the latter issue is related to the mystery problem that delayed the RLX, or if the radar system on the US model is also potentially deficient.

2016 Acura RLX Gets More Standard Features In Hopes Of Drawing More Buyers
The whole Acura lineup has been getting some attention lately, and now it's the turn of the RLX, as the 2016 Acura RLX gets numerous refinements.
Likely in an effort to minimize configurations and bump up sales, the 2016 RLX, Acura's flagship sedan, goes from five trims to three. The base model is gone, and navigation is now standard on all trims, along with 19-inch wheels. The RLX with Krell Audio trim is also dropped, but it looks like the audio system is still included with the top-trim Advance Package.
Another big story of the 2016 RLX is the addition of a new safety package on most trims. Called AcuraWatch, it's the brand's name for the suite of safety tech such as adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, cross traffic monitor and even the new Road Departure Mitigation system that's also debuting on the 2016 MDX and 2016 Honda Pilot. AcuraWatch is standard on mid-level Technology and top-level Advance cars. Advance trim also benefits from a new surround-view monitor system.
Acura says they've also made changes to the RLX's suspension, decreasing stiffness of the rear stabilizer bar and front and rear spring rates. All of these modifications may improve the RLX's value equation a bit, but with just 3,413 sold in 2014 and a lowly 172 in January, RLX sales could use all the help they can get.
Because there's no base model for 2016, the starting price for the new RLX goes up $2,500 to $50,950. The Technology model (AcuraWatch standard and ELS audio, among other toys) goes for $54,450 and the Advance for $60,450. All of these prices are unchanged from 2015, however, despite the additional features.
Oh, and thanks to the addition of a new color, you can now have a 2016 Acura RLX with AcuraWatch in Acura Silver Metallic. All of that Acura is on sale now.

Anyone know what RLX trim sells the most? I guess it's not the base RLX if they're dropping it. They must've realized that a top of the line TLX for $45,720 is a better value than a base RLX for $49,370

I don't know.....one of the many issues of the RLX is the high base price. There's no overlapping in price at all between the cheapest RLX and the most expensive TLX. Almost all, if not all established luxury brands have some overlapping between different each models. For instance, you can get a fully loaded 335i for over $60k, while getting a base 5 series for less than $50k.
But when you look at Acura, the base RLX is $50k, while a fully loaded TLX is $45k. That's quite a bit of a jump. I've been saying that the $50k base price is hard to swallow, especially for a brand that doesn't have much status. Eliminating the base trim doesn't really help at all. The RLX really needs to starts at around $40k. At $50k, there are just way too many choices out there.

While i agree with you on the fact the thing needs a substantial update, I fear the one to the ILX will be nothing more than a short term bandaid and doing such to the current RLX would be even less effective in current form.

Here's my question, what can they do to the RLX that isn't a band-aid fix? The ILX is fine being $28,000-$34,000 and still FWD. The RLX maxes out at $61,000 and is still FWD. Do they have the ability to make it standard AWD?
I really can't see how they fix the RLX until the new model comes out. Also why doesn't it have the 9 speed? They put it in the MDX and the TLX, but not the RLX? Makes no sense to me.

This 2016 update, is just that, an update. It's minimal at best and surely not enough to resurrect the model. The only hope I have is that Honda is working on a major refresh for MY 2017. I personally think the changes needed will be too much for a MMC. For instance, one of our biggest complaints is the styling. But making the car look much sharper than it is now requires many sheet metal changes that might not justify the costs.

They did this with the RL too. Did you know the first ten RL still used a 4 speed transmission when the TL had the 5 speed? This went on for years. It just goes to show they either don't know how to compete at this level, or they don't take it seriously.

What i mean is that, an ILX level of update is the minimum level required for the RLX refresh. It will need some pretty big changes.
Probably not much man. As soon as the RLX was shown in the auto show, almost everyone knew it's DOA. The styling was so bland it totally killed any hope of the RLX ever doing well. Then when the starting price was revealed, it simply confirmed the DOA status.

The Biggest New-Car Busts Of 2014

10. BMW Z4
11. MINI Coupe/Roadster/Paceman
12. Volvo S80
Shiiiiet. Acura can't even get #1 for biggest failures. Is there anything Acura can be #1 at these days?

I don't think the lack of V8 is too much of an issue. I think the lack of RWD is more of a concern. It's very unfortunate that RWD mule that we saw got cancelled.
Ideally:
Base RWD RLX with 310hp V6 engine: $45k (535i, E350, GS350, etc)
eSH-AWD with rear bias sport hybrid: $53k (GS450h, activehybrid 5, etc)
Detuned boosted V6 from NSX with 450hp: $58k (550i, E550, etc)
RLX with boosted V6 + eSH-AWD system with 550hp: $75k (M5, P85D, E63AMG)

Haven't been in this thread for a while.
The latest from us who watch the RLX closely:
--The RLX Sport Hybrid has been completely, and I mean, completely, removed from the U.S. Acura website as of a few weeks ago. You can't even configure accessories for a 2014 Sport Hybrid in the Acura eStore anymore. The only mention of the Sport Hybrid is when you go to the Acura eStore for parts.
--The 2015 RLX Sport Hybrid is available on the Acura Canada website.
--The only rumor regarding the Sport Hybrid is that Jeff from the TOV said recently that he'd asked Acura brass about it, and they said that a 2016 Sport Hybrid announcement would be "forthcoming". We don't know when the announcement is, or what it is.
The bottom line is that unless Acura tells us differently, the Sport Hybrid is effectively dead for now. Scrubbed from the website, no marketing, not even any credible rumors. It's no longer vaporware since there are 250 examples in the U.S.
And iforyou, no one's going to pay $75k for a RLX if they can't even sell Sport Hybrids at $65k. If I'm spending $75k on a car, it's going to be another CTS-V. Just saying.
Again, it's too bad, the RLX is a well-executed car. Needs a few more features for the price and a more evocative exterior design, but otherwise it's' pretty good. I'm satisfied with mine but there are good reasons I leased.....

I'm satisfied with mine but there are good reasons I leased.....

....and yet the PAWS is the model they have chosen to continue in the face of complete market rejection. I think the RLX needs to die a merciful death and Acura needs to leave the mid-luxury space since they are choosing not to take it seriously. If they are taking it seriously, their actions speak differently.
Of course, that means I have yet another rare car in my fleet. 1/250...though I don't see the Sport Hybrid being auctioned at Barrett-Jackson.
OTOH, look what Cadillac is doing. The CT6 is balls to the walls luxury made by a company clawing its way back to relevance....and largely succeeding. Why does the RLX have only heated rear seats that are not adjustable. It has NO rear power outlets for guests or my son to use. It has no rear seat controls that even the JDM Legend has. What the frack, Acura? I'm sorry, but you suck in this space.
I will probably be leaving Acura for good once my RLX lease is up in 2 1/2 years. They will have to work REALLY hard to keep my business.

Interesting developments. Acura's too busy focusing on the TLX and ILX. They want to make sure they're successful since it's their bread and butter car line up. The RLX isn't even on their radar anymore. Tunnel vision.
Do they have teams dedicated to each model or is it just a bunch of people jumping back and forth between models, depending on where the fire is?

Like i said before, ACURA is CLUELESS with this car. The single best thing they could do is shut down production of this abomination now, get a ALL NEW DESIGN team to design a proper RWD car for the segment that they are trying to stick their nose in, and get rid of the RLX-SH SHAWD name and name it LEGEND!!!

Acura is schizophrenic thanks to a mixture of US cars and the singular Japanese car, the RLX.
And hopefully the newly-freed Acura will be allowed to make adult decisions regarding its powertrain options and platforms. It'll take a few years but hopefully proper V6 and V8 RWD vehicles start to show up.
