Steering the ship? I think they stopped that back in the 90s when they opted for the alphanumeric naming of their cars and wanted to just blend in with the other luxury cars on the market.

Acura could skip V8s, introduce V10s

John Watts, product planning manager for Acura America told Automotive News his company will test the waters with a V10 in the next NSX. If that goes well, there's a good chance V10s will end up in other Acuras, too.
"That's the plan,” Watts said. “We'll see how people react to a 10 in the sports car and maybe move from there. Maybe instead of using V8s, we'll take the next step up and go to V10s," he said.
V10s are usually reserved for ultra-expensive sports cars, with the BMW M5 and M6 being the least expensive mainstream vehicles to feature V10 motors. But Acura could conceivably use less powerful ten-cylinder engines in its more premium models, including front-engine coupes

Ten cylinders in front engine RWD coupes --> good idea.
Ten cylinders in front engine FWD coupes --> dumb idea.
Shouldn't Acura first consider RWD platforms and then worry about the number of cylinders?
I agree with the OP. Honda seems lost.

You obviously didn't pick up the sarcasm in my post. The fact is Honda makes these statements about making leaps and bounds but seriously, going from a V6 to a V10? And then claiming that they can put it in their forward engine line up?
There has been no production V8/V10 by Honda, there is currently no production RWD platform by Honda.
My statement was more to point out that Honda's statement of jumping to V10's is really unrealistic looking at how they've been operating for years.
Oh well... if anything this statement fits in perfectly with the Acura Exec stating that Acura is targeting Maybach and Bentley.
BTW - if you're going to argue putting a V10 in Honda's current (up and coming) AWD platform.... yuck. Honda's AWD platform is clearly FWD biased.. and with all that weight in the front from the V10, it'll pretty much handle like a FWD car. They'll need to revamp the AWD platform and place the engine behind the front axle to make it actually work and to distribute the weight of the V10 throughout the entire vehicle.

_____ like a rabbit
this is what honda should do...
Rwd through out the applicable lineup --> V8 RWD w/ an AWD option through out the applicable lineup --> do that for a good decade or so --> then do a V-10, reserved for the larger vehicles/sports cars/specialty cars...

So, honestly...the guy can say anything he wants. He could say he's building the next Acura Aston Martin DB-NSX-TL-Type-H and I would still not give a fawking fawked fawk until I see it finally in production.
Acura/Honda are absolutely the masters of the vapor-car.

2 things to keep in mind though,
1.) Acura/Honda still makes some of the best handling FWD cars, beating their rivals even on race tracks by quite a bit, ie TL-S, and new Civic Type R.
2.) SH-AWD might be FWD biased, but BMW and Audi are copying this system, while Mitsubishi stated they will come up with a better system than the SH-AWD (implying its super AYC+ACD combo isn't on par with SH-AWD?)
Nonetheless....V10 FWD doesn't sound right at all...

So when they say "The Power of Dreams", they throw reality out the window?
Considering how secretive they are about their REAL plans, these comments may be more of a diversion to distract fans from what's really happening over there at Acura: NOTHING EXCITING.

Baby steps Acura... baby steps...
You need to learn to walk before you run... but I guess that the V10 development work they've done in racing should help with v10's made for the street...

Watt's is obviously just talking pie-in-the-sky stuff. If you read his comments again you'll see he only said they will "test the waters" with a V10 in the next NSX. That's reasonable for a halo car and old news. He then made the vague comment that if that goes well they'd consider adding it in other Acura's. What does that mean? Really nothing.
It was the Automotive News author who extrapolated his comment to mean they are considering a v10 in a sedan. Watt's never really said that in a serious manner. It's hype generated by Automotive News for their own gains.
There is no news here guys

My goodness. If i owned Acura i'd:
1-Leave the TSX FWD and offer SH-AWD as an option. This keeps the option for people looking for a front driver Acura.
2-Make the TL a Rear or SH-AWD only car
3-Drop the Accord platform for the RL and make it bigger with an 8-10 cyl engine, but leave the V6 as an option
4-Bring back a coupe based off the TL, make the styling closer to that of the TL but with some more edge to it. Honda does this with the accord, and had they done it with the last gen CL, it would have sold better. With the return of a coupe with rwd or awd, acura has the chance to at least make a car that is as amazing to drive as an E46 M3 at an affordable price.
5-Since every car in the lineup will have AWD as an option or standard equipment, give us more engine choices. Give us the option of the Standard 2.4 in the TSX or the Turbo 2.4 from the RDX as a TSX Type S. Give the TL AWD and over 300 horses to compete with the likes of the 335 and G35 in terms of horsepower numbers. Lets face it, in america horsepower sells cars. Honda needs to stop being so green with the Acura lineup and give us a high revving 6 cyl performance motor. And i hope they dont bring a V10 out in the RL only to risk power and claim they have the most eco friendly 10 cyl ever.
And does anyone think i am crazy when i wish that Acura would drop the RL, give it's technology to the TL, call the TL the Legend and bring back the Legend Coupe/sedan with rwd/awd. Then they can bring the TSX up a notch and offer more power and options. What do i know, i just went on rambling, but it's because i want to get back into an Acura, but i want something much more from them.

what??? Here I see two problems:
1. V10 sports IS going to be expensive.
2. Would people buy $100k+ Acura branded car?
remember sub $100k NSX didn't sell well at all, what make them think they can move $100K+? unless they mark it at around $80k, but again that probably won't sell either. below $80k, probably not possible cuz it is a freaking V10.

Regarding the RWD/AWD debate that perpetually rages on everywhere; I don't get as excited about this issue. I DO NOT want FWD. Handling and torque steer are too annoying. But, I'm OK with the AWD system they have. Adds some pounds, won't let you have as much fun drifting around (if that's your thing), but, it's got many pluses which outweigh it's negatives. Then again, maybe that's my age starting to talk. You start thinking different when you get passed 40, said to say.

I found that original article from Left Lane News that the OP was quoting from.

Sure does sound like this Watts guy was serious. But, I can't imagine the powers that be are considering skipping a sensible v8 solution for a 10. This guy must have just been day-dreaming out load.

Despite its lack of a V8 option, the RL should NOT be discontinued. The RL is a great car in need of a competetive edge (over its segment contemporaries) just as Acura is a solid brand in need of competetive edge over its brand contemporaries.
It would be nice to see a V8-SHAWD RL go head-to-head against the M45X, E550 4MATIC and 535xi. (I am sort of surprised that Honda had not attempted to introduce IMA to the RL's pre-existing J35; it could have been a respectable stopgap measure until the introduction of a V8 in the next gen RL. )

I'll take an AWD CL w/ 290hp. That can compete with the G37, IS350 and non-turbo 3 series.

There's a good chance we'll have flying cars before an Acura V8 on any of its models.
