wiring issues

ok, so i'm in the process of putting my stuff (2 amps, 1 sub, 1 cap) into my 96 TL. after running the wires and what not, i am short a few things, so i just decided to bypass cap and see if sub amp (RF 500a2) and sub would work together. sub is a RF DVC power 12" (1000 watt RMS).

everything turned on, meaning my amp i guess, and the sub worked. here is where issue comes in. the amp got hot pretty quick and the middle of the sub (coil) was also getting hot. but the sub was putting out crap for bass. it wasn't hitting at all. and my lights were dimming like mad. so i'm thinking that i have the sub wired wrong in the box and that i have it pulling way too much wattage.

the DVC has two sets of terminals. here is how i wired it:

(+) of term1 to (-) of term2, (+) of term2 to (-) of term1. then the (+) of term1 to (+) of box terminal, and (-) of term1 to (-) of box terminal. it did not give specifications in the manual for hooking up only one sub, so i was going off the two sub setup. so onward: (+) of box term to R+ and (-) of box term to L- on amp. i think that is a mono bridge with some messed up sub wiring......yeah? if someone could point me in the right direction, i would be more than appreciative. i only let the stuff run for maybe a minute while i was messing with the settings, seeing if any of those were wrong. but nothing is the miss on the radio end. thanks all.

You had the two Voice Coils wired out of phase with each other.

You should have done one of the three:

Parallel: All the + together, and all the (-) together (if you have 4 ohm VCs and a 2 ohm mono stable amp)

Series (if you have 4 ohm VCs and a bridged amp):

box + to VC 1 +

VC 1 - to VC 2 +

VC 2 - to box -

OR... just wire the amp in two-channel stereo, one VC to the R side and one VC to the L side.

so it turns out this amp is 500w x 1 @ 4 ohm. should i just run it stereo to not put the amp to 2 ohm? i'm not as good with the ohm stuff. asking for one last bone to be thrown.

If you have 2 four-ohm VCs, I would run it in stereo - but if you only have one set of speaker terminals to get wire out, bridge the amp and use the series option. The same power output results... 4Ohm stereo and 8 ohm bridged mono should be identical power OP.

If you have 2 ohm VCs then series and bridge mono.

ok, i was right then. i only have one sub and one set of terminals from the box, so i did that series option. it sounds great. and i'm not sure if you remember, but i had posted about a vibration of sorts coming from the box when i hooked it up to my home stereo. well either the sub is too loud for me to hear it, or it's gone completely. maybe the wiring was not right back then or it wasn't getting enough power, etc. either way, it's gone and the sub sounds pretty good as is. thanks for all the help.
