we have done a few on cars at our shop. all but one of them were for employees though (not that that makes it any better but atleast they know the consequences and what not). The only non employee we ever did one for was for this insurance adjuster who works in an adjoining building. We try and stay in good terms with him because I doubt you can find someone who will find car parts cheaper than he, that and he is a pretty good friend to all us installers. Anyway he insisted on putting a remote start on his m/t saturn. We of course said it's not a good idea and proceeded totry and convince him not to do it. He wouldn't have it though. A few months later he walks over to our building and tells us he just had to shell out a ton of money to fix some damge he caused at his mechanic's shop. Long story short his saturn was up on some form of a lift, something caused it to remote start, it didn't stay on the lift. I couldn't help but laugh (after making sure that no one was actually hurt). He still refuses to take the remote start off even after that whole fiasco though. . .

There is still no 100% perfect way to remote start a car. So it is better to be safe than sorry that you hurt someone.

i thought this thread was about something else. my friend has had remote start on his car for a few years. recently his car has been shutting off while driving. his mechanic said it had something to do with the remote start so they just removed it. the problem went away after that.

im not sure who installed that remote start or what brand it was or what...........but that is some stupid reason to not get remote start.....

i have a code alarm system w/ remote start. when my remote start is activated:
it locks doors if there not locked already
enables alarm
if you touch brake to put in gear it shuts off
only way to move car after that is to put key in and click it over

i dotn no what that ladies problem was with hers but thats a dumb reason to not get remote start

funny you posted this... I went to a shop this morning and asked them if they would rig up remote start on my (manual) car. the guy said an installer did that last year on his own car, and when he tested it out in the shop it jumped through the wall into the store. he got fired, and the owner said he would fire the entire staff if anyone got caught installing remote start on a MT

none of what you said has anything to do with what happened in the article.

Well thats how most remote starts work...Mine which is a Clifford RSX 3.5

You have to turn the key to the ON Position and them Tap the brake also...

But you can rev it up to a certain extent of an RPM...and if you cross the extent of RPM's it alows then the shuts off...But it only allows that cause it has a set of RPM's it considers the area where the car warms up...

But anyhow....my bad for the hijack

Why not get a Compustar that has a manual remote start capability?! Its safer, it makes it very difficult to remote start your vehicle while in gear.

Or if you have a subaru WRX or STI and or a maxda protege thats standard, theres actually a neutral safety wire built into the tranny that you can use to integrate with the alarm.

Do you have a MT? She left her car in gear (reverse), so thats why it happened. If you leave your car parked in gear the same thing will happen - even with the features you described..

its not a weird ass accident. she started it with her car in gear. the reason you aren't supposed to put remote start on a MT.

edit: what TSX said

Yep... actually makes is very diffiicuylt to use your remote starter at all... forget to "rub your tummy pat your head" and you're SOL.

Any of those cars on this Acura board? How about Isuzu Trooper owners, those have one too...

And if that switch ever goes bad... the installer's still liable. I beleive the car will drive fine w/o it, it's a "Check Engine" smog thing for them, but ...

If they have an MT they should RUN away from this feature. IMO.

There are systems that add a good measure of safety... but they do require a specific set of steps to shut down in such a way that remote start is enabled. Forget the sequence, and the car won't start.

And while some alarms that do not have the safety can be installed with an installer-created system, it's worth noting that the system's manufacturer at that time no longer stands behind their product. If anything ever does go wrong with it, the manufacturer will point at the MT and say, "sorry, we won't help you...".

I don't quite understand how it happened. I have a manual trans. car with remote start and have only had a problem one time. The reason I don't have problems is because I NEVER PARK MY CAR IN GEAR. Since I first started driving man. trans cars I never parked them in gear so by habit I park in neutral and just set the break. I really don't even understand why people park their car in gear.

I do notice that anytime I take a man. car in for service the tech will park the car in gear. Well I forgot this important peice of info one time while I had remote start. My tech was a lexus dealership and as soon as he gave me my keys I hit the autostart button. Well I'm searching for my car in the lexus parking lot and when I find it I see it learch forward and tap a LX470. To my dismay it was IN GEAR! The tap wasn't bad and nobody was around so I took off. But the even though it lurched forward it immediately cut off because the gas was not being pushed and the brake was set. That's why I don't understand how the lady's car drove off.

I've got a 99 cl, I'm putting a remote start in. I'll wire in a neutral safety switch, parking brake switch and I always park in neutral anyway, so no worries.
