You can go with 5 1/4" or 6 1/2" speakers. Either way, you will need spacers for them. .5" spacers are perfect as long as you keep the mounting depth of the speaker at or under 2 1/4". I've heard people use 3/4" spacers, but it seemed like the speaker just cleared the door panel with the .5".
I just got my Pioneers in....camera wasn't working, so I wasn't able to do a DIY or take pics to help you out....but honestly once I figured out my plan of attack, it took 10 minutes to pop them in.
So heres a quick step by step if you guys need info:
Things needed:
-Speakers
-Spacers
-Drill and a small drill bit
-Phillips screw driver
-Electrical tape
-Pencil or marker
-8 screws for drilling into metal
-8 1/4" or 1/2" screws (these are for the speaker going into the spacer, the screws provided probably wont work)
Process:
-Take off the door panels, there is a DIY on the 2G forum
-Unscrew the stock speakers and disconnect the wires.
-Snip off the connector on the wire
-The spacer will fit right in the groove in the door around the speakers, hold it in place and mark off where the screw holes belong.
-Take the drill and the bit and drill holes where the markings are.
-Place spacer back in its location and drill it in place with 4 screws.
-Connect speaker wire (which most likely came with new speakers) to the wire ran in the door. Solder them together and cover with electrical tape.
-------Tip: use a lot of extra wire, if it is tight, you may run into a problem when you roll the window down...the glass may pull on the wire and disconnect the speaker)
-Place speaker in place and use the 1/4 or 1/2" screws to screw it into the spacer. (Length is a big deal for this....if you have a 1/2 spacer, obviously the screws will need to be smaller, if not, it will just hit the metal on the door.)
-Put panel back on the door and you're done
