Question Tweeter replacement

Does anyone out there have any tips on how to remove the stock dash tweeters?

Is there a special tool or technique that works best? Any help would be appreciated!

I read somewhere on this board that you "popped" them out with a thin, stiff blade. Perhaps a knife or a flat head being careful not to scratch the dash or tweeter grill.

I also read that the grill/mount/tweeter were a consolidated unit making upgrading difficult while keeping a stock appearance.

I would like to see a picture of the tweeter and mount out of the location as I would like to upgrade as well. Who has a picture or is brave enough to take the tweeter out and photograph?

Anyone, anyone . . . . .

The tweeter is removed from the dash by using a flat blade (small)screwdriver to pop out. The grill will detach from the tweeter via clips but I tried to put Infinity tweets in but gave up after not being able to attach to the grill to my satisfaction.

Thanks for the replies. I'm off to find a small screwdriver!
BTW, my plan is to buy a pair of Clarion 6X9's coax's with detachable tweeters (on order - model SRX6983's) and mount the tweeters in the dash, woofers in the rear deck. Changing the door speakers is next on the list, but we'll see how much improvement there is from this step first.

Interesting idea. Keep us posted.

I had an audio installer put the Focal 165 K2P split system on my car, don't know how they did it, but they successfully put the tweeter in the stock location

Great picx gsclifton. Thanks. I'm still waiting for my Clarion's to arrive (some delay at etronics). Looking at the holes in my rear deck is getting old.

etronics seems to have some great prices. Have you purchased through them before? What's your experience with them?

Just a word to the wise - I installed my Polk components and it was easy - just had to enlarge the tweeter mounting holes a bit with my dremel like tool and the basket mounts fit well. However, my set came with these 1/2" screws that secure the mounting basket to the multi pronged thing that holds the speaker basket down on the dash (you use a screw to pull the spider part up into the underside of the dash and it holds the speaker basket in place). The TSX dash is fairly thick, I had to go buy either 1 or 1.5 inch long (#8?) screws to replace the ones that came with the speaker set cuz the stock screws simply were not long enough to install. that added about an hour to the install and a bit of frustration - get screws that are long enough before you begin so you can just get it done in 45 minutes or so.

jlukja - I've had good luck with etronics in the past (with a Kenwood MD deck) so I went with them again for the Clarions (they were about $10-15 less than elsewhere). I called them this morning and they told me why my order was delayed - their shipment arrived damaged so they have to wait till a new one arrives (today or tomorrow). They seem good to deal with, and you can talk to a human if there's a problem (a big plus!). I would recommend them.

Gpump - thx for the tip. Will keep it in mind!

Thanks horsetrdr, I appreciate your input.

I'm still trying to justify to my wife why I would want to replace the speakers on a brand new car. The stock speakers seem to have improved in sound over the last month (see my question on speaker break-in).

You are I are in the same boat my friend. I have found it is easier to beg for forgiveness than ask for permission.

I have found that it is often better to shield/protect the "better half" from the complexities of vehicle enhancement. Basically, if my wife understood "why" she wouldn't ask in the first place. By placing yourself in a position to have to explain it, you will only frustrate her and she may feel obligated to explain to you why you need to "enhance" the kitchen, vining room, and dining room.

I think I just need to wait a little while. Sooner or later that must-have purse or those must-have dress shoes will make an appearance and then I have something to bargin with. In the meantime, keep posting and I'll keep dreaming.

Well, I had a change of plans since I started this thread. Etronics kept telling me that the Clarions I wanted were delayed so I gave up and cancelled the order. I went to the nearest Circuit City and picked up a pair of Alpine 6X9 3-ways. I also had a small (40WX2) Coustic amp laying around that I decided to hook up to these 6X9's at the same time. Bottom line - huge improvement! The rest of the speakers are stock, and they may just stay that way now. The bass is really the weakest aspect of the stock system and it is amazing how much better it sounds with just a minor (about $220) upgrade such as this. Anyone looking for a big bang for the buck upgrade with a minimal time investment too should consider this step first. You may not need to go any further!
