TV Install
Anybody here ever install tvs in their headrests? How hard is it? I know how to hook them up but I'm not really sure how to cut the headrests and mount them. Do I have to out a fuse on the power wires?

I can get them to power up but its just a blank screen. I dont see the movie. I just run the RCA from the VCR to the TV, right? Or am I missing another piece or something?
I am installing three 5" screens.

Yup, that's all you should have to do. I don't know what kinda screens you have, but that's all that should have to be done.
Bahree: I thought I emailed you back about the IP bus cables. They are now longer made which I think you knew. I checked all my sources and none of them have them, BUT, a couple guys are going to be clearing out some old equipment and when they do they are gonna check for me to see if they have any laying around.

No it doesn't. But let me ask you a question, and I'm not being a smart ass or anything....are there multiple inputs on your monitor? If so, make sure you are using the right one and make sure you are using the "video out" from your VCR!

Ok, are you sure your RCA cable isn't bad? When you say a blank screen, you mean a "white" screen? Also, you VCR isn't set on some auxiliary setting is it? Are there any kind of switches on the monitor itself?

The RCA Cable has to be good because it works in my house and the VCR is set correctly also because of the same reason. The monitors dont seem to have any switches on them either. The screen isnt white, it is grey.

Composite video should be standard in mobile applications. Your monitors should be nothing but composite video....have you gotten anywhere yet? I really don't know what else to do from over here. You tried all the monitors and they show nothing?

I got them working! I dont know what I was doing wrong but I got it now. Maybe I pressed a button on the VCR or something.
Now I have to mount them in my headrests.
Thats gonna be tough. Any tips? Whats the easiest way to do this without screwing it up? I heard the sunvisors are even harder than the headrests. Is this true?

Do your monitors have mounting rings or no? If not, you have to make a cut out in the headrest (obviously). Ever done anything like this before? In the TL headrest, you have to modify the foam itself to hold the monitor nice and flat or else you'll get wrinkles in the leather (trust me, I have PERSONAL experience with this problem.. NO MORE though!).
If you never did it, I would send it to an upholsterer or someone who has done this kinda thing before.
Visors need to have new covers made for them for sure!

I am also having trouble with the wrinkles around the monitors. How did u fix yours?
My TVs have mounting rings (thats the trim around them right?) and when I try to mount them in the hole they wrinkle up and don't sit flush. I hope I can get around this somehow. And also how did u get the wires through the seats to the headrests? I don't want to cut my seats.

The backs of the seats come off to run the wires down through them.
As far as the wrinkles...you may not be able to eliminate them too easy because you are putting a flat screen in a curved headrest. The foam may need to be flattened and the material may need to be stretched slightly or the hole may need to be etched out. It's not always easy, especially with these headrests.

Well I got most of the car wired up except the visors because I still didn't think of a way to route the wires up to them. I also got the screens in the headrests but I'm not crazy with the way they look. Like I said in an earlier post I can't seem to get the wrinkles out and they don't sit flush. This is my first time doing this and TL's seem to have annoying headrests to work with. Any tips? I also tried to remove that panel on the rear of the seats and it doesn't go all the way to the top, it stops at about 6 inches from the headrests. How do I get the wires all the way up there? Do 95-98 TLs have different style seats than 99-00? Maybe I do have to poke holes? I dont want to butcher my seats.
#25
No, you don't have to butcher the seats. Just use a wire hanger or if you have a wire puller and feed it down through the seat and tape the wires to the end of it and pull them up through the top of the seat.
As far as the headrests....depending on what kind of holes you made, you may need to have them recovered...email me some pics of them if you have them so I can see.

I would E-Mail u some pics but I dont have a scanner. Anyway, everytime I try to push them into the hole they pop out. If I apply some pressure on them and hold them in they dont look bad. What can I use to hold them in tight? And as far as running the wires if I use a hanger where do the wires come out from the top? Theres no slit or crease or anything.

I also wanted to ask if you had yours recovered. Is there some kind of trim piece under the leather that keeps it flat?
They look really good. I'm not even hoping of getting that kind of look. That is definitely the best work I've seen. As long as mine dont look too bumpy or sloppy I'll be happy. I eventually want to try something bigger like 7" widescreens maybe.

You bring the wire right beside the hole for the headrest posts. Take a thin screwdriver and pull the material to the side (no need to pull hard and don't worry, it won't rip). Than slide the wires either down through it, or do the hanger thing from the bottom.
My headrest were recovered. BUT, you can do this. Take the cover off, put the monitor in place and add 1/4 foam as needed to build the headrest back up so the material stretches tighter. Know what I mean?

With the visor off, you can run a wire up the pillar of the car and through the hole where the stock power wire for the mirror comes down through!
Help anytime you need it! No problem!

Thats what I have been trying to do. I ran
a long piece of metal wire as a snake from the top hole down the pillar and it gets to the bottom but I can't find the end. If I look under the dash and wiggle the wire I can hear it scratching the metal but it seems like there is a piece of sheet metal which seperates the top and bottom of the dash. Where should it come out from?

Run it on the outside of the metal pillar behind the snap off panel...not down the middle of it...if you do do that, you have to drill a hole at the bottom to get it out!
