Tuning Ported Subwoofer system?

Ok so I got an MRP-M1000 and a Kicker Comp VX 15(DVC 4Ohm) hooked up at 2 ohms running at 1000 watts rms give or take and 2000 peak(not too important)

Anyways after numerous hours of research I still don't have too much of a definate answer on how to tune my amp and sub so that I do not blow this speaker. I had it in a 2.3ft3 box which was sealed and it was way quieter than my old type R was with 250 watts less. So I decided to build a ported box according to kickers max specs for SPL. The box is 5.6ft3 including the port which is 3in x 15.5in x 23.5in(added 1.5 to length since the port has 90 degree angle). Yeah, its safe to say I have undoubtably lost my trunk completely ill try to post pics another time when i can find a working camera.

Having said this mouthful(wanted to be as informative as possible the 1st time) I'm asking the guru's to chime in and let me know how to tune the amplifier on this thing because from my understanding distortion is way more dangerous in a ported enclsure due to no air cushion of pressure, its also more difficult to hear the distortion. When I tuned this sub it was for the sealed box and there was absolutely no distortion nor clipping so I left it the same for the ported box, gain and bass eq are 1/3 up and the lpf is set at 80hz.

Get rid of the 90 degree angle, you need to round that off to at least 45

Are you asking where to set your gain so that you don't blow the sub? Or are you asking how to get louder? In order to set the gain and know for a fact that the amp is not sending a clipped (or dirty) signal is to set the gain with an O-scope.

To get louder, there are many tricks you can do to the box. PM me if you want to know what some of them are...

Yeah I was looking to where to set my gain at because I dont hear any distortion in the speaker whatsoever, no slapping nothing. From what I understand though with a ported box distortion is much more difficult to hear than in a sealed box which is why I'm worrying about it.

U shoulda kept ur type r 15 and built an beter box..for that sub i would do 3-3.5cu@32hz for the lows. As for setting ur gains, depending on wat deck u have, turn it up to max volume or the loudest u would go with out distorting and have ur gain on ur amp on 0 and make sure the bass eq is off on the amp as well..and set ur lp on around 80-100..once u do that now turn ur gain on ur amp up till u hear ur subwoofer distort and back off a bit..thats the way i do it and i have no promblem..I have that same amp as u on my 3000 pioneer spl sub and it gets real hot after beatin down on my sub lol

^ Maybe you should turn your gain down then... There's a reason it's getting hot, probably because you're pushing it too hard.

OP, set your hu for ~3/4 of it's max volume (unless you have an O-Scope, which at that point you can find where your hu starts sending out clipped signal and use that volume level) with all eq's set to flat, and any/all bass boost set to 0 (as in 0 gain or drop, if you have an Alpine or other hu that goes from say 0-15). Play a 0db test tone at ~40hz (that's what I use, some people say 50hz) and turn the gain up till the sub starts distorting/unloading, whichever comes first. Then, turn the gain back down a tad, and go...

Yeah, using a DMM, you can set your amp for roughly the power output you want, but you pretty much have to use a test tone, or it's worthless. Music fluctuates too much to use that to set your gains using a DMM.

Is there any how to video or anything on using a dmm? Would I be checking the amperage drawn and use a formula to find wattage?

Truth... Doing it by ear is much more difficult, especially when you're working with mainstream gear. Some amp (Soundigital for one) have clipping indicators on them that actually indicate when the amp is starting to clip (my buddy checked it with his O-scope) so those help out a ton. But mainstream gear like what the OP is using will be much tougher to tune without a DMM or O-scope. I wish I had a scope so I could check where my hu starts sending clipped signal... That'd be nice to know...
