sub sounding like garbage in trunk

Quick question, My sub sounds good and it hits okay for one 12. Its a Kicker Cvr12. I have dynomated the whole trunk, tightened down the trunk lid. It barely rattles. I turned up the sub and opened the trunk to show my friends while the music was blasting. As soon as I opened the trunk it was making these funny farting sounds didn't sound good at all. I was embarrased. In the cabin it sounds okay but outside the car with the trunk open Is it not tuned right or is it supposed to sound like this. Why do all my boys with trucks, have the best sounding sub is it hooked up differently. Do I just need to tune it better?

edit it is in a ported enclosure!

It could be that the pressure difference when you open the trunk is making a difference. You should look up the specs for your sub model, and see if that matches your enclosure. You could also try a sealed enclosure -- not as loud, but probably a cleaner sound; again, you'd have to get a size based on the specs. When I had an 8" sub, I really enjoyed the sound using a sealed enclosure. Yeah, I couldn't compete in a sound-off, but really, how much bass do you need? I mean, seriously.

Ported boxes arent suppose to sound as clean as sealed boxes. Usually for ported people want their system to be loud and obnoxious. with a sealed box its more clean bass instead of just loud bass. ;]

With a good ported box tuned to the right freq. it can sound even better than a sealed box for either sq or spl.

A ported box will always sound better than sealed in SQ and SPL. It need to be matched to the application its being used for, and the woofer.

ALSO your sub is bottoming out, turn the gains down.

I have my gains down actaually, I turned them down due to having to much bass or too much for my taste. I find myself turning up and down the subwoofer via the headunit so there isn't as much bass in some songs on certain cd's. I fixed all the rattling so my car can handle more bass w/o annoying me so much. My amp pushes 600W which should be optimal for the power hungry kicker CXR...P1 used to make funny noises in the same box with only a 300w amp... When you say a perfectly tuned box u mean amp set on the right frequency? Im thinking about buying a smaller ported enclosure the only problem is the smaller boxes are from bestbuy...I don't think they will be very good...
