Strange Woofer Blowout...

So i've had woofers blow in my day, but never quite like this..

I traced everything back and made sure everything up to the speaker worked and it did.. I took a cheap 6" and plugged it in and boom i had sound (it was a lil pissed though since it was a 6.5" speaker getting 500rms but it was only a second)

ANYWAY So I take it in thinking okay maybe theres a problem with the wiring in the box, nope i pull the plexi off and the box and hook right up to the speaker and nothing.. I accidently bump the cone and boom i have sound!

So it seems something blew because if you push the cone outward or inward you get sound but in its resting position you get nothing..

Anybody know what happened? (besides me never buying a polk momo subwoofer again)

That sucks. Another reason to buy stuff from an autorized seller, I guess.

Fortunatly I bought it from sound domain (who is an auth polk dealer) so it will get fixed (minus the cost of shipping a huge fucking subwoofer)

I just never had a speaker blow this way, was wondering if maybe bass mechanic could shed some light

sounds like the tinsel leads (wires) connecting the speaker terminals on the basket to the actual coil in the cone are broken. this can easily be fixed by resoldering the broken wire. the problem is you have to be good at soldering because the solder will "wick " into the leads making them stiff. you have to solder hot , fast and have a heatsink clip attached to prevent it from wicking.

unfortunatly, if it broke once it will likely break again.

some other things to consider, is the box your using built to spec? meaning what are the maximum volume requirements and power handeling requirements of the sub? it could be your pushing it too far or the cone is moving farther than it should, causing the leads to break.

is it sealed or ported? sealed boxes allow for more cone excursion than ported boxes do.

perhaps you got a bum sub where the leads were soldered to short?
if you have a warranty, best advise is to return and exchange it.
