What does everyone prefer? How many of you guys are just trying to get it as loud as you can vs. trying to get something that sounds real good?
P.S. I would have also turned this into a poll if I could f'n figure out how to do so.

SQ for me. I could care less if someone else doesn't hear it. Its for my enjoyment.

I wanted a totally SQ system, but I am a HUGE BASShead so I had to buy higher end stuff to get both.
There should be a button for both. IT IS possible

SQ: my goal is to get as close to live as possible, although i am aware that with my financial situation it highly unlikely to get the most precise equipment, but i plan to get the best suited components i can afford.

I'm fairly confident that volume and loudness are a big part of the appeal to a lot of people - probably a majority of people.
I'm still struck by how hi-fi as an interest has changed. When stereo was new in the 50's and 60's, the effect was a huge interest - but who nowadays sits and listens to music for 30 minutes while doing nothing else?
It's hard for me to do - and I place importance on it. Today, we are used to talking on the phone while we drive, or listening to music while we do homework, or exercise. Giving our focus or attention to one thing for a while is a skill few of us have. I actually don't like having music playing when I'm working (I usually let it play during the day in the shop, but when I come in and work on my own car, I don't play the radio, because I find it distracts me. I'm weird.)
Which of course is why I do car stereo instead of home. Home stereo can sound much better than car. But car stereo gets listened to more, and thusly can make a bigger difference in enjoyment to the owner (IMO).

Yeah I never listen to music anywhere really other than in the car. A few years back I wanted loud bass (all the kids in high school I remember had boomy bandpass boxes that sounded horrible).
After that on a small budget went with Infinity 6 1/2"s all around and an Image Dynamics IDQ sub. Recently got a nice Alpine HU and it sounds very nice, the sq is almost where I want it. I just need a separate amp for my 6 1/2s with a crossover to remove some lower frequencies from them.

I do! I make it fit in my schedule!
in the car, i need sql (loud, clear with great soundstaging) so i won't hurt anyone elses ears. at home i listen to lower levels so i don't hurt my grandsons ears. does the time of day influence the type of music people listen to? for me its r' n r' during the day, jazz in the evening, and classical at night.
