Speakers blown in 99 TL

POS Bose

Mustve been one of the bad mp3s I turned up loud that did it, now I cant turn it up more than a few notches before it starts to sound like crap. What are my options at this point? I was thinking of replacing all the Bose speakers in the car with something better (on a budget of course), but leaving the HU in place. Id rather not mess with the system as I dont know the first thing about wiring speakers, so I was going to take it to Abt and have them install the speakers after I decide which ones Id like. Is it doable on a budget of about $500 for parts? Or does anyone have any audio/video shop recommendations for the Northwest Chicago suburban area that can help me out?

if you just replace the speakers, get ready to shatter your windows. The bose system uses an Off-Board EQ which boosts teh treble a ridiculous amount before going back into the headunit for amplification. I would suggest a new headunit, then new speakers.

Ive read somewhere on the board that theyd be able to bypass the EQ entirely at the expense of volume of the sound. Is this recommended, or should I try to fit an amp onto the whole setup?

If you are doing all for sound quality, i would reccomend you go ahead and start replacing componenets now that you have an excuse to do so.

If you want to just try to replace the speaker, i would suggest you just replace it w. another bose speaker.

Hooking up an amp to the stock system will work though, but i think it's too much headache for just a tad better quality

Possible good news...I think my iPod itself may be bad. I have it hooked up to a cassette adapter (hold your laughter ) in the tape deck of the TL, but anywhere I listen to the ipod, it sounds distorted, whether its the car, my headphones, my pc speakers, etc. It is just a lot more noticeable in my car because I turn it up pretty loud. Im going to hook up a friends ipod and see if I have the same issue, just to be sure. Good thing I got a 2 year warranty on mine in case I have to return it.

Probably not that, I've sometimes played the iPod until it died because of no power and it sounds pretty good until it turns off. It was more than half way charged when playing in the car.
