Some news on doubledin plates.
Some news on doubledin plates.
OK, I was talking to value-tl, and he told me they do have the installation kits for a doubledin/single din setup for the inspire out in Japan. I will talk to him today, and see if I can get one ordered to try out.

If you see the link above, it looks like it should fit our cars. I will give you guys an update, when I talk to Value.

Dont now just yet. I'm sure that it could though. Im just worried about fitment issues, between the US model vs the Japanese models.

problem, japanese models are right hand drive right? Well, if you look your console is angled towards the driver which means that the angles on the stereo are not the same which means we would need the backwards unit....

I think it depends on how the angle is created. If the actual installation kit has the angle, it might be a problem. It the angle is created by the console/dash, the kit would be a problem. I have not had the console apart, so I don't know. Is the faceplate uniform or unbalanced?

I have had the radio off and I created a plate for it already out of plexi. Unfortunatley, I put the DIN in the wrong place so I have to do it over but I can tell you the shape of the plate is not symmetrical. There is a much greater angle on the passanger side.

I think that you are right. But who knows maybe we can use the reverse side.

Thats the other thing . Do we know if the reverse side is three dimensional or not like with brakets or something.

OK, It looks like the kit will not work on our cars. Theirs would be the exact opposite as ours. Since the INspire is very popular in Japan, they make one over there. I also emailed a company called scosche, who make kits for car. I never received a response back. I'm very pissed on how neglected we are.

I was trying to hold off for the longest for a dash kit. But I couldn't wait any longer and just went and bought a pocket and made my own dash. It sucks..once we get a little attention, some other car takes it away!
Do you have pics of it? Are you done with your kicks yet?

I talked to Metra and Schosche and they both said no dice...no plans since there is no demand. They said that since the cars come with a "premium bose system" nobody will want/need to replace.
Clearly they are wrong about this, but they only care about how many units they will sell, so we get screwed.
I just made my own. The process was simple:
1. Took out old stereo.
2. Figured out a way to remount the change drawer-thing that used to attach to the top of the stereo. I just used metal strapping - no big deal.
3. I used the cardboard from the back of a paper pad to make a template. I made like three of these until the thing was perfect.
4. I took the template to a plastic place and paid them $40 to laser cut the template onto 1/8" plastic with a textured surface.
5. I glued, using silicone adhesive, some l-brackets to the back of the face plate.
6. Used metal strapping to attach the thing to the inards of the dash board.
All told, it looks damn fine. I will post a picture once our digi camera comes back from repairs.
If anyone needs help, let me know. I could even send you a copy of my template, if that would help. It fit two different DIN units, so it should be pretty universal.
Regards...Michael
