i got this e-mail from phoenix gold. i got an alpine head unit so i think this message is right on target w/ my problem. hope this helps you some.

"Most likely the cause is from the head unit or any processors before the sub amp. Alpine head units are the most common source. You can tell if it is the amp or not by turning the sub amp off by means of unplugging the remote wire. This will shut down the amp without shutting down the HU or any processors and if it is quiet when it shuts off, you know it is not the amp. If it still pops using this method, then the amp will have to be sent in for repair. If it is a processor or head unit, you can purchase our DD5 which has delayed processor and head unit turn off outputs. It also individually fuses all of the amp remote wires and processor power wires. Feel free to ask a local dealer about the unit. It is fairly new so they might have to order one. Good luck and thank you for your interest in Phoenix Gold!"

I have the same amp but not the pop you are getting.

My wires are Scosche 4 gauge. Not sure if that makes a difference. Do you know what gauge you have with your install??

Yea i know what it is, U running a stock head unit right? to connect the amp u used a HIGH LOW Converter right?( it looks like rca female on one side and colored wires on the other with a box in the middle) Well certain amps pop certain dont, u can elimintate with a Speaker non popper thing, go to circuit city or radio shack, explain what u need.

Check your ground wires, sounds like feedback or distortion...usually when you have a bad ground either in the head unit or the amp get shit like that. For the amp....Make sure you sand down the metal and scrape any excess paint off when grounded and keep the ground wire to 3ft or shorter.

here's something i found in one of the older posts. i experience the same popping sound whenever i shut down my system but the amp i have is a jl audio 300/4. didn't happen when i had an aftermarket alpine amp. once i put the jl audio, i keep getting the pop. yet some have the same amp and don't get the popping. i don't know why that is. here's an explanation of what causes the pop and how it can be fixed.

{quote} "2.2 My system "pops" when I turn it off. What is happening and how can I get rid of it? [JD]
This kind of problem is often caused by transients in the signal processor as it powers down finding their way into the signal path, which the amplifier then transmits to the speakers.

Usually this can be solved by adding a little turn-off delay to the processor. This allows the processor to stay powered on for a short time after the amplifiers have powered down, thus preventing the pop.

Many components sold today (such as crossovers, equalizers, etc) have delays built-in. Read your manual to see if it is possible to set this delay on your piece of equipment or be sure to look for this feature during your next car audio purchase.

If your processor does not have this feature, you can build your own delay circuit with a diode and a capacitor. Add a 1N4004 diode in series with the processor's turn-on lead, striped side towards the EQ. Then add a capacitor in parallel, the (+) side of the cap connects to the striped (processor) side of the diode, the (-) side of the cap goes to ground (not the radio or EQ chassis - connect to the car chassis).

Experimenting with the cap value will give you the right amount of delay before the EQ shuts off. You don't want it too long, just long enough to make sure the amp is off before the EQ powers down. 220 - 1000 uF is about right, and make sure the cap is a polarized electrolytic, 16V or higher. Also keep in mind that the diode will introduce a 0.7V drop on the remote wire, which can cause the processor to power down before the rest of the system. {end quote}

ok guys.I did fix that problem,i went to orchard supply to buy a soldering iron to weld the head wire to allow maximum process from the head unit. so now, when i turn it off, the amp is quiet.
