CL: retaining navi functionality with after market hu
retaining navi functionality with after market hu
OK,
I have a 2001 acura premium with navi and am thinking about replacing my head unit. I was looking on crutchfield and when I enter my car information, there is a note that says "The factory navigation system will be lost if radio is replaced.".
I assume that this message means that I will loose the voice prompts from the navi.
Does anyone know if there are any head units that I can get that that I can keep that navigation voice prompts? My primary requirement from the head unit will be that I want it to be Ipod compatible.
Any information about replacing the head unit without loosing the navi features will be greatly appreciated.

I replaced my nav with an aftermarket nav that I installed in the OEM nav location.
The OEM nav still works (w/o voice prompts).
FWIW the oem nav is old & slow compared to current units.

If you find a radio that has a telephone mute signal with the audio input to go with it, it will be easily doable.
The nav unit sends a mute signal wire along with one low channel output.
If you go with an aftermarket amp that powers your inside speakers then you can buy a signal switch to swap signals via rca inputs when the nav units sends out its voice prompts.

It is an option I am considering.
