Replacing the head unit???

Okay, first off.....I offically have my first scratched factory rim today

Second I would like some input on changing the factory deck out. I would like to install a new CD player with a half din eq but I had a stereo shop tell me today that they would charge me $200 to build a kit for it!?!?!?? Does this sound right??

Also, they told me that I could use the factory speakers with the amps on them if I used a good enough head unit with 4 volt pre outs, which I have. They said they would convert the RCAs into normal speaker wire and run it to the speakers. They said they would charge about $50 to do this. Has anyone had any experience with this??

And I guess my final question would be, do you think the factory speakers would sound good enough if I were to do this?? I would like to add a sub eventually, probably 1 12" in a sealed enclosure.

Any input would be greatly appreciated?

heheh, I just love this guy

200 bucks for the kit alone or the whole installation?

About converting line-level signals to speaker-level signals, I hope you heard it wrong. If you are sure you heard it right 100%, dont bother to bring your car there. This is the weirdest thing that I ever heard.

I'm 99% sure that the 200 bucks included the kit and install. They wanted an additional 50-60 bucks for the wiring.

But you think I shouldn't go back to this place right?

Do you know if I can take out the stock HU, replace with aftermarket HU, add a new 4 chan. amp and run the factory speakers off of the aftermarket amp??

if you replace stock HU and amp, you'd wanna replace the stock speakers as well. Stock speakers have paper cones and weird impedance. They are really out of place in an aftermarket system.

I could be wrong, but I think I remember someone (Mr STREETEFFECTZ?) saying that they ran an amp and aftermarket deck to the bose speakers and they sounded a LOT better. Don't quote me on that one though...

You are right. Eclipse (Ernie) said that. Of course, it would sound better since the 1lb stock amp provides merely enough power to make the speakers make some sound. However, from the look of those speakers (paper cones and made in China), it would sound a lot better if you put in aftermarket speakers even cheap ones. Plus the weird impedance or so I heard (1 Ohm??), it would be safer if we replace the whole thing.
