Remote Start

What are the advantages and disadvantages of having remote start? I have a TSX and the Viper 791XV alarm. Also how does it work? So if I remote start my car, then I stick the key in the ignition and just drive like I normally would? Thanks again!

1) Advantage: turn on your seat heater and interior heater ahead of time.
2) Disadvantage: kill yourself and/or your cat in the garage.
3) Advantage: another remote-control function which appeals to the testosterone-fueled male ego.
4) Disadvantage: Eventual realization that "it ain't the shoes"...

You remote start your car, then stick the key in the ignition and turn it, THEN step on the brake. The last disengages the remote start and returns control to the ign key.

Truth is, RS is a must-have in CAN and the American Midwest (like Embarass, MN). Out west, like in the Pac NW where you and I love, it's a luxury/toy, not a tool of daily life, like it is in the Great White North.

I forgot two things:

5) If you have a 6MT TSX, then you don't need the garage to create fatalities. RS is bad, mkay?

6) You need a good install - hack RS installs create problems for life...

I just had a RS put in and I love it. It's been single digit cold up here the past few weeks and my car is nice and toasty when I go out to get in it in the morning. Basically, a RS on the TSX might cost an extra $50 because they need to put in an emulator for the electronic key to enable the engine. You'll also have to sacrifice your valet key for this, as it goes in a box they install somewhere under the dash.

You have to put your valet key somewhere in the car then?

I didn't realize they had to do that. Wow...sounds risky to me.

Yeah, the valet key (which I never used anyway) went into a little module that connects through the RS to the ignition that allows the engine to start. The module is basically an ignition switch emulator, and all it does is read the code in the key and pass it on to the engine before cranking it.

Otherwise without the presence of a properly coded security key the RS won't be able to start the car, because the engine will think somebody is trying to hotwire it.
