Oh No!! - Sub Blew Out

So, I've been hearing a bad rattle from the rear for about 2 weeks now. Finally got the time to go figure out what it was. Started in the back seat, nothing. Opened the trunk, yeah something in there is rattling like hell. Nothing on the rear deck. Pull the sub box closer to me.... What the hell, the sub is rattling. Take the screen off and I find this:

So one of my subs (pair of JL 10W08) blew out....

I guess its not bad, Ive had them for 10 years, since I was in high school lol. AND I bought them USED haha

The other one is still kicking, but I'm sure it wont be too much longer.

So, now I need the help of you audiophiles out there. I'll be looking to replace the other one. I probably want to downsize to just 1 10" or 12". My amp is capable of 220W @ 4ohms or 400W @ 2ohms. I'm assuming I probably want to be at 400W? What sub do you guys recommend? I listen to mostly hard rock / metal, and I don't need it deafening, I want nice tight clear bass. I love hearing the bass and sub-bass in things like Linkin Park or Fear Factory. I'd also like to keep as much trunk space as possible. So heres my questions:

1) 220W @ 4ohm or 400W @ 2ohm?
2) 10" or 12" (or other)? Prefer just 1 sub
3) Sealed or Ported box?
4) What brand / sub in particular?

Appreciate your help guys, I dont really know much about audio equipment. Don't even know what quality the JL's were since I bought them used lol. I'm sure someone will ask about my budget. I dont want to spend a fortune, but I dont want junk either, so whatever that is going to cost, I'll consider it.

Thanks

1. 400 @ 2
2. 10" if you're wanting to play with higher end subs with 400watts
3. sealed will give you a tighter response, ported will give you more uummmmphhh
4.
SSA Icon 10" Dual 1ohm (so u can run them at 2ohms)

I've been looking through a couple different forums, and I see that Image Dynamics name alot. They really as good as every says? Looks like the IDMax is designed for 1000W, so maybe the IDQV3 is a better choice. (Thats the one I noticed a lot of people recommending)

The Alpine Type-R's seem very popular. I could be the Alpine poster-child with those lol (replaced all factory speakers with Alpine type-s and the amp is Alpine too, not to mention the factory nav is Alpine)

JL seems to be the classic. Was looking at the 10W3v3.

Right now I'm leaning towards the Image Dynamics in a sealed box. Going to keep looking around. Any other comments / suggestions are welcome.

ive always been partial to JL. Easily attainable and sound great to me. Not always the loudest but always nice and clean. Ive had the w6, w1, w3v2 and now a 10w3v3. Always in sealed boxes too.

Building a fiberglass enclosure for my friends f150 thats goin to house a new TW5 series. Cant wait to hear that one.

Honestly, you cant just go by peoples suggestions alone. Go to a few audio shops and listen. They of course wont sound like they would in a car but you can get an idea.

w/ only 400w I don't think you have to spend a lot of money on a sub. Most entry to mid level subs would sound good with that much power.

wong had some good brand suggestions, but I don't think you need those level of subs,
maybe the step below most of those:
SI baby mag
Soundsplinter RL-i
Image Dynamics IDQ

or if you were happy w/ the JL, the w3 is always alright i suppose. The IDQ is probably one of the best SQ subs even though it's been around forever in some form. I've never personally owned one, but I've always wanted to give a couple a shot. I know a quite a few people that run them, and others that change around their equipment a lot that always end up back w/ the IDQ.

The more I look, the more people I see recommending Image Dynamics.

Just ordered a 10" IDQV3.D4

And, I'll be building a custom sealed box. You know, just to keep myself busy until it gets here lol.
