New to Car Audio, what to get?!?!
Ok I mod cars for performance and I hardly know anything car audio related. I don't like the sound of the Bose factory system. I want to replace the front two, the both rear speakrs, and the sub. What companies are good? Any links so I can compare? I like boston acustics for my home theater speakers and might consider these for my car, are they good spreakers? My preference is "NOT" to drive around bassing or anything, but rather to enjoy my music a little bit more with deeper more rich sounds... Thank you in the meantime...

well, boston acoustics is a very good brand -- they are installed in a car that a bud of mine worked on and they sound fantastic. He replaced the front stage with the boston 6.53 components in the kick panels and an extra neo 6t tweeter in a custom fiberglass a-pillar (used time correction). As far as the rears, I belive they were rallye plates and the bass is provided by none other than a 12.5LF powered at ~600W. Let me tell you, that is an amazing sub!

I'm going to give you the answer that I've given everyone before on this one...get what sounds right to you. Go by a shop, really invest some time and listen to the speakers...usually what your ear hears is best. Some companies to consider are JL, Infinity, Rockford Fosgate, Kewood, Alpine, Image Dynamics, Eclipse, JBL, Kicker, Boston Acoustics, A/D/S. There are more but that's off the top of my head. Any of those brands are good brands. Notice Sony was NOT in there. However, a caution...what sounds good at home may not sound as good in the car...I have Infinity at home and JL in the car...my brother has Sony and Bose at home (and we are all familiar with Bose) and Infinity in the car. So go listen.
Second, and as the other guys said...make out a solid price range. Including the cost of the speakers and the install if you have it done, or the wires and kits if you DIY.
Third, decide how much trunk space you want to take up, and how deep of an installation. You could go the easy route and just replace all your factory speakers with 6.5" coaxials...that drop into the factory locations, a standard HU, and a 10" sub in the trunk. Or you could go all out, with 3 ways in the front and rear, center channel, 12-15" subs in the rear, etc etc etc...so decide how in depth of an installation and how MUCH you want.
I can give you some advice if you like drop me a line.

my budget would be in between a 1k-2k. Again I don't want a system for bassing, but rather getting better sound for my music. I don't want anything in the trunk, no box, no speak, no amp... Just replace factory speakers with something with more richness in sound. I think I'll head over to Soundtrack tomorrow... Thank you soooo much guys...

I have said it a million times now, check out the prices of the Crystal components and subs at www.mmxpress.com . I am usually the first to say that music is a matter of personal taste, but the Crystal's sound damn good and the price is even better right now. Get the metal tweeter if you like sizzling highs and the silk for smoother sounds (I prefer soft dome tweeters myself).
You could get a 6.5" comp set = $118
a 12" CMP = $249 and spend the rest for your amps.
I will definitely put these up against the JL VR series, Boston Acoustics Pro series, and the CDT speakers in build and sound quality. Ask anyone who has had the chance to listen to these speakers/subs very nice stuff, I would even pay the full $350US for the 6.5" set, but there subs are the ones taht are truly amazing!
Act fast though, I don't see them lasting very long at those prices.

oops I missed the part about nothing in the trunk. You could try a pair of the JL or Focal 6" subs in the rear doors, that should provide a decent bottom end. Then just forget about the Crystal subwoofer. I really suggest getting an amp though. You are looking to spend a good chunk of change on speakers, why waste them but feeding them small amounts of unclean power??
You could try a Brax Helix HXA400 MKII to power the entire system. It is small, built like a tank, and sounds very good! This amp can be had for a good price from www.theautophile.com Just tell Peter that Bryan So sent you. He will take good care of you.

Definitely not going to start an argument...but you can get the set of JL XR series (aka the best series, TR being the lowest) 6.5" 3 ways for $250...the 6.5" coaxials for $150, and the 6.5" two ways for somewhere around ~$185. And of course that's what I have...so realize I'm biased. Even so, if you want ultra quality...go for the Infinity Perfect 6.1...the most beautifully accurate sound I have just about ever heard...I just prefer JL for a bit more bass response...

*Note: edited out "VR" which should have been "TR", VR is mid series.

Yup, I think we have butted heads over this topic before Just to be nit picky, the TR's are the lowest line :P I actually consider the Crystal's to be right up there with the XR's, but I knew I would hear about it from you ha ha.
The Perfects? blah. Just not my cup of tea.
evolaerok I hope you are paying attention, this is a prime example of why speakers is a personally choice. Just try to find some time to go listen to as many speakers as you can. You said you liked the Boston's so you like muddy vocals Bose should be right up your alley!
Seriously though, the most comparable speakers I can think of along the lines of the brightness of the BA's are: Infinity's, JL's, Focal's...
Austin, I am sure you agree that he should amp the speakers right...

My bad...you're right. I looked at your post and it didn't make sense, then I realized I hit V instead of T, good call
You seem to always hear about it from me eh autophile1? Sorry about that bud...I'm trying to be better...more of a "my subjective opinion is well, just a subjective opinion" approach...thought I was doing better
I agree with your choices...and I definitely agree with "he should amp the speakers right"

I'm in the same boat too, I just got my new TLS last saturday and I'm dissapointed with the Bose Speakers - they just don't have anought 'bite' (for lack of a better term) - to me the bose speakers are analagous to trying to cut a steak woth a butter knife - they just don't have enough 'edge' to them
