Need your opinion...(sub and amp)

Ok, I want to install an aftermarket sub and amp setup in my 99 TL. I want to still use the stock headunit, and interior speakers. I don't want something that you are going to hear from 10 miles away, but I do want something thats going to hit decently inside the car, without over coming the inside speakers. What setups do you guys have? What do you recomend?

i think a little more info (ie music preference, how much you want to spend, how much space you are willing to give up...etc) would allow people to sugguest a setup for your needs... but just taking a stab at it and being a big jl fan i would say 1 10w3v2 and a 250/1.... simple and not that expensive...

Basically, I listen to all types of music.... rap, rock, dance, etc. I don't mind giving up some trunk space, but like i said, im not looking for something to deafen my passengers, just something with a nice clean bass hit. Maybe 2 10's, and a small amp....I want to know what setups everyone has, and their opinions on them

I have a 10" Kicker L7 with a MTX 6500d putting about 700 watts at 2 ohm. It is awesome. Great sound quality and has the ability to get really loud. Though I typically listen for sq over spl. The JL's that shaw recommended are hard to beat. Stay with top brands and you can not go too wrong.

overboost, Nope.... It is possible to add an aftermarket sub and amp to the factory head unit. You just need to take the signal going to the stock amp, since there are no RCA jacks on the back of the stock h/u

Well, then if it's possible, will the performance of the subs be detered in anyway by keeping the stock HU and speakers?

I'm looking for something that hits harder than the stock subs also, I'm not going into bass competitions or anything, I just want to be able to feel my music. I don't have a lot of money, I'm looking to spend around $500 - $600, I know thats not a lot at all but I'm just curious as to what I may be able to do with it...

This is somewhat of the quintessential question of car audio. If you want to keep the stock HU and stock speakers, then you are looking for somewhat of a "quick fix" for the addition of bass to the system.

It's good that you're not looking for something that folks will hear 10 miles away...since you can't do so based on your requirements.

I'd suggest an amplified bazooka bass tube or some other powered sub kit. The better ones will have speaker leads you can "tie" into that will only enact the sub once there is voltage to the speaker wiring.

It's obvious that you're not ready to do a full blown install. You have to decide on how much you're willing to spend and how much space you're willing to give up. Bazooka, MTX, Rockford Fosgate, and Infinity all make self powered sub kits that will work for you.

You need to decide what you want and how much you're willing to spend to get what works best for you.

Enjoy!

I just added an amp and sub to my 02 TL. cost me a total of 275$. I used an Alpine MRP-M200 Mono amp (99$), and a Alpine Type "S" 10" Bandpass box. (175$). have to say, it won't win comps, but I am pretty happy... except for the fortune I have to lay out for dynamat now.. EVERYTHING rattles!!!!

click on my "www" which will take u to my website. then click on the trunk page to see preliminary testing and fit. since im using solobaric subs, they dont take up much box space, even though they are 15's. its really not that bad considering there are 12's out there that need a box as big or bigger than mine

also, 12's would do fine but you would have to find a good quality sub that will take that kinda power and has the stroke to push some serious air.

Quite right systek!!

I was only suggesting a "cheap and quickie" install based on the question. Using a speaker level amp with a pair of subs would require quite a bit more work/money than a powered sub. We know you can't just slap any sub into any box and it will sound good. The subs will require a box of the right type (sealed, ported, bandpass) and with the right internal volume depending upon which box type is selected. For many people starting out with car audio, this is like speaking greek. The powered subs are "supposedly" factory designed/tested to provide the average listener with enough bass to give a little oomph to the system.

Of course the results would be dramatically better with an aftermarket amp/sub setup, as you suggested.

My suggestion was based on his statement of not needing bass heard for 10 miles. If he's willing to put the extra time/$$$ into it, definitely go with systek's plan. It will sound MUCH better than a powered sub.

It's all about the $$$$$
