You'll have to post about the other stuff in another forum but I can answer the electronics part...you want a dvd/mp3 player? When you say this do you have navi and want to use your navi screen, or are you wanting a motorized screen? You will end up taking out the factory bose HU and equalizer...and the stock speakers are 2 ohms. So you will end up wanting a HU that can output to 4 channels at 2 ohms (most HUs). However, you'll want to replace your speakers as well...because the paper cone Bose speakers are too pathetic to actually reproduce good sound.

p.s. - I'd actually do a search on the other two...they've both been discussed plenty. And yes, we're out there.

Actually, the door speakers are rated at 4 ohms. At least that is what Bose told me.

Are you sure? Because I was told by 8 or so people on this forum that they were 2 ohms...which is why when you replace them with 4 ohm speakers it's much quieter. I'm tired of not knowing this...I'm going to call and find out about this one.

as far as will the new hu work with the bose system yes... talk to streeteffectz he has a wiring harness that will allow you to replace the stock hu and use the existing speakers but personally i think you will probably want to replace the stock bose speakers but you do not have to in order to changer the stock hu... and as far as a hu that plays both mp3 and dvd the only one i have seen is panasonics but i am sure there are many more out there that do this really i believe it is all personal preference... you might want to talk to ron@streeteffectz about changing the wiring harness...

I'm pretty sure they're 2 ohms fyi.

I see Ron has another worshipper heh heh heh.

You're upgrading backwards to tell you the truth. You'll want to get better speakers and subs first, then a better HU. I can understand if you want to play mp3's...but it'll be a real waste to do that without a better speaker setup.

Like I said, my information comes from Bose. Take it for what it's worth.

I was curious to find out the truth after reading this thread here. Got the exact same response as preludeshfan did.

So why do you think that they are 2 ohm speakers? Does it say 2 ohms on the back of them? Just because an aftermarket set is quieter doesn't necessarily mean that the Bose speakers are 2 ohm. Dare I say that there is the possibility that the Bose speakers are VERY EFFICIENT. :wow:

You're very right...they could just be very efficient...it doesn't mean they're 2 ohms. I completely agree. And no, there are no markings on the speakers anywhere. To be completely honest, I'm going with gut instinct and the fact that all the other Bose systems I've seen are 2 ohms. That's why I'm pretty sure, not certain

Why would Bose give us the wrong information? Even if others say that the speakers are 2 ohm doesn't mean that they are right. In fact, I've heard anywhere from 1-8 ohm ratings, which are mostly from "professional" installers who worked on other Bose systems and assume that they are all the same. I'm sure that Bose does make 2 ohm speakers in other vehicles but they do not in ours. If you took a look at the thread I talked about earlier, you will see that the sub is even rated totally different from the door speakers (1/2 ohm).

I don't mean to make a big deal out of this, but I would hate for someone to go out and buy a set of 2 ohm speakers to put in their TL and destory the factory amp because it couldn't take a 2 ohm load. I can't explain why others are experiencing a decrease in loudness after installing 4 ohm speakers, but I would be hesitant to recommend anything lower than 4 ohms, especially if Bose recommends otherwise.

Agreed...and I'll check on this. But believe me manufacturers have known to be wrong. But as of now you're probably right. I'm still going to check though. I would think that the HU would be ok with a 2 ohm load though. Now I feel the need to take my dash and doors apart...haha

Isn't there some way to check the resistance? I thought that I remembered something about this in my physics class. Guess I should have paid better attention.

Bose mentioned that the speakers are only getting 12 watts and I'm assuming that this is max output. Do you think that 6 watts RMS is enough to power a mid to high end speaker? Perhaps this is why everyone is complaining about a significant decrease in volume.

Yeah, I just have to go out and do it

Well first off Rms isn't necessarily 1/2 of max. The real definition is that RMS = MAX/sqrrt(2). Others just list a preferred RMS or 1/2 of max. Either way...the HU can be run at max...so it would be 12W to the speakers, not 6. And no...12W isn't enough to power anything worthwhile...
