Avic D1

Finally got it installed in my 03 TLS. I kept everything factory and I wished I didn't. Did not realize Bose factory speakers are this bad with out the bose amp. Guess I will have to upgrade with new speakers/sub and amp. I also hardwired my IPOD with the pioneer cable. Not as slow as I thought it would be as far a searching but it only shows about 8 characters of text and does not show song title. What a waste of a 6.5" screen.

My brother just put in one of these in his CL-S, its nice but i hate the fact that you cant watch DVD movies on it. IMHO whats the point having two drives if you cant use one of DVD videos,

wow who did your install.. it looks ok but i think you should holla at ron to see about getting a new faceplate cuz that one does the unit no justice.. but i agree with the rest of you all that unit is basically useless since it does not play dvd's...

I'm thinking about doing the same install my question is do you have a problem with looking down @ the screen while trying to drive? or do you just rely on voice commands. I was thinking about taking out that pen holder up top to try to move the screen up as much as possible? Also did you try disabiling the dvd lockout because its not like your really going to be looking @ the screen just playing videos is a cool showoff. nice unit by the way

im about to get this unit next week. i contacted ron and he advised me to get a external dvd player that is very very small. this way it is easy to switch from navi to dvd without swapping discs

Looking down at the screen is a bit risky so I try to rely on the voice command. I bypassed the lockout which makes it even more "fun" to look down, mess with the navigation, and drive. Just be careful when driving and using the nav if you have the lockout bypass. Im still pissed about the IPOD intergration. Sounds nice but the useabilty sucks. Maybe a firmware update could better things for the AVIC D1. Or maybe the AVIC D2 will have improvements. We just gotta wait and see. Navigate on!

Nope, it will be installed (replaced) where the stock HU is located. Ron is making a custom dash piece to fit D1

You kind of don't, but the answer is in the question. The HVAC controls and Head Unit controls are, unfortunately, on the same circuit board so that is why I'm so damn interested to see how the hell they did this.

The circuit board stretches the entire height of the HU from the bottom of the HVAC controls all the way up to the clock in the dash. Which I thought left no room for an aftermarket HU where the stock HU is now.....looks like someone may have the answer

Oh man, you have to ask Ron yourself, he still got my D1 unit with him and the answer to your question can only be answered by him ( don't want to mislead anyone since I have no idea how he manipulate the so call impossible to ...heheee ). And yes, he showed me how it would look like after it is completely done in his shop(unfortunately, on that day i pickup my car, i did not take any pics). Anyway, he is ordering an extra part needed to make this whole system work, so I am also waiting patiently for him.

And thank you to all the people out there who recommended Ron from StreetEffectz, he is absolutely the person that I can trust my car with(knowing how picky I am with people who touch my car). And also what I can tell you guys is that he is a very enthusiastic person in his profession. Will prove that statement in a week when the car is completed and pics will be posted up that same night after I get it, that is what I can say for now.

Not having seen the guts, are you sure it's one board? Not just a couple of boards mounted on the same plane? Or maybe the board can be "easily" repositioned and the button contacts extended with wire. Really curious now...

From what I remember...it's one board no question. I'm wondering if the AVIC-D1 screen can be disconected from the AVIC HU and the screen is just mounted on top of out stock HU...that's all I can think of.

Any updates? Pics?
