AVIC-D1 in 1999 TL
Hello all-
I am hoping to install the new AVIC-D1 into my 1999 TL that has no navigation. Is this possible. What i am trying to figure out is would it fit in the where the original Navigation unit goes. (buy the instrument cover from acura that has the hole for the nav and buy the buttons to move the ac/heater controls down into. Is this possible?
I know that the wiring harness are still hooked up to the stock radio but i will disconnect it and use it for the nav unit.
I just dont like the idea of having a screen that comes out and cover up all the buttons.

You would have a better chance of gettin a custom double DIN opening made from places such as Tweeter. Have them, or someone else, install the Avic-D1 in there and leave the intrument cluster (non navi) stay where it is. This way you will save yourself the hassle of buying the dash from acura or used one from ebay. Additionally if you have the Avic-D1 installed you wouldnt need the factory cd player, so it will be useless anyways. My
go to tweeter or a local auto audio shop, have them make you a custom double DIN dash kit, to replace the opening that would be made once the factory unit comes out, and have them install the D1 in there. That way it would look more OEM.
Check out this kenwood unit install, it looks almost like the D1 Link
heres a refference picture, see how it looks OEM if not better.

His answer is a little misleading.
The double DIN opening pictured is an almost totally custom piece made by someone very skilled. You can order this kind of thing from Ron at StreetEffectz on this board.
The off-the-shelf radio kit (they are called "kits" for some reason: ) looks NOTHING like what his picture shows.

Anyways, welcome to the forum, good luck with the install. You get the idea what route would be cost efficient and easier.
I do have this kit at home the one for the single deck and bought myself the N2 but i do not like the idea that the screen comes out and covers up everything, I really like the D1 which is the double deck. Can ron make the double deck type for the D1?
ron can do ANYTHING you want him to. btw, getting the dash piece for the navi and installing the screen in that place would ruin you A/C mechanics. the stock navi controls some of the A/C functions. so youd be able to turn it on but not adjust the temp, and that just sucks
