99tl doesn't play burned cd's.. does yours?
i have a 99 tl and it doesn't play burned cd's... I called the dealer and he said that there was nothing he could do. I searched the archives and learned that some people have had their head units replaced... but the dealer said he wouldn't do it just because it wouldn't play burned cds... please help.

I had this problem when I first got my car. Turned out it was because I had forgotten to close the session on the CD. For some reason, the TL head unit doesn't like open session CDR's. A simple fix. Also, if you use Disc-at-once for burning, that also takes care of the problem.

I posted about this before. I have a 99TL also and found out after much experimenting with different types of Cd-R's the only ones that work are the Cd's rated for 16x burn speeds or less. Don't know why but after trying out different CD's rated for higher burning speeds (1x-24x,1x- 32x,1x- 48x etc... ) the only one's that work are the 1x-16x ones. These are getting harder and harder to find so if you do actually find some buy a whole bunch to last the lifetime of your car or just get a CD changer. Its notthe speed which you burn at but the actual speed rating of the CD...

Not to muddy the water, but I've never had any trouble with a number of brands of CD-Rs on my '99 TL. For overall sonic reasons, I always choose to burn very slowly 1x-2x and typically copy from disk image to ensure the best results. Burning a disk image also eliminates the additional pause between tracks.
So, try a slow burn and see if that helps.

Heres my simple solution:
CD Brand: Maxell Pro CD-R (They are blue, and also a little expensive)
Burn Speed: 32X on WMP (Windows XP)
Also - after a long time of playing, my player gets hot, and for some reason it plays so much better when its cold, so I turn on the radio and let the cd player cool down.

My Problem
I have a 99TL and I use Imation and other older burned CDs, some from years ago. They've all been burned at 4x. I have a new burner, but have not made any since I got it and some new Fuji? Cds. Anyhow, none of them have ever not played, far from it. They all work fine when I load them, the only issue is when the head has to go looking. When I start the car, it takes a while for it to find where it is. Sometimes up to a minute or so. After that, I usually eject it and reload it, then it flawlessly starts at track 1. I get the same issue if I skip tracks. Sometimes it takes a few seconds, sometimes it's worse, but it gets to where I don't like playing those CDs because I'm sure it's not good for the drive. I will try on the new CDs with a new burner tonight. I had no idea you all had different issues.

try color cd
Yeah, my 99 tl only works with certain cd. My cousin's 99 tl is the same. What you have to buy is color face cd. For sure it will work. At least that's what's working for me and my cousin's. Also, try burning it at lower speed. Takes longer but at least it works. Good luck bro....

I had the same exact issue when I first got my 99 TL. Since it was under warranty, I took it back to the dealer and got the HU replaced, supposedly with a 2000 one.
Now, every CD plays fine. It doesn't matter what brand, what speed I burn it (even up to 48x), or type (Music CD-R's, etc). I think in general, people who have this problem just need an updated HU.

I have an 01 and found out that only 24x cds work for my car. But i just burned the new 50 cent with a 24x and the thing is that it plays, at times it takes a looong ass time for it to load some tracks(especially the higher number tracks like track 21.) So what did you tell the dealer when you told them about the problem? I think i need to take mine in.
thanks

That's pretty much what I said. Sussman Acura of Maple Shade, NJ is also VERY accommodating, so I'm sure that helped too!
Hope you get it fixed soon!

Some players are picky about the dye composition of the discs, and some are picky about the speed at which discs are burned. Buy a few of different brands and experiment. Eventually you'll hit upon the right combination of CD brand (there's only three or four out there--all the companies buy from them) and burn speed (lower usually has better acceptance rates).

I essentially told them the above, that certain CDs didn't play correctly (and I brought the burned CD and showed them). This CD plays in all other CD players, be it car or otherwise, but not in this one, which leads me to believe that this player is probably defective. Under my warranty, I believe it needs to be replaced.

I just called the dealer and he agree to look at my 99 TL. I'd figure I do this before my warrenty runs out in augs. First he tried to tell me that cdrs are thicker then regular cds and it would scratch the lens (b**s***). Then I mention that I wasn't the only one to have this trouble and kept complaining till he gave me an appointment time. Now I'll be taking it in tomorrow.....hopefully they will do something. jjpark they replaced your whole unit?

Yes, they replaced the whole head unit (HU). Actually, there may have been a TSB:

I'm not sure if this refers to it or not (sounds too general).
Good luck!

I just took my car into today and they ordered me a new HU that should arrive Tues. I don't know if the new HU will be any better since every acura (even my friends TL 2001) has some sort of trouble playing cdrs. but I'll keep everyone posted.

with my current HU for the 99TL, I tried Sony, Memorex music, memorex, and fuji......one time my 50 pack of memorex played really nice in my cd player but I only have about 2 of these cds left.....I got more memorex but seems these 100 pack memorex don't work too well. The other brand like sony (the most expensive) was the worst and the fuji being the next best. If the new HU the dealer will install doesn't fare any better.......I think I'll just trade in the car.

just setted up an appt for friday to let them look at my HU and my Tranny as well. when i talked to them, they said that there is nothing they can do to my HU except switch it out and it wont be any better. Is that true? did they make you test out the cds before they swapped it out? are they gonna switch it out with a used HU or a new HU?
thanks

I argued with the general service manager so much over the phone that when I showed up (I was ready to show him how the cd player didn't play, and I had a portable cd player that played the cd that the acura cd player didn't too)....he just got the parts specialist to order me a new HU. Then the parts guys told me to call tues to see if the new HU is in. Make sure you ask if its a new HU. I really doubt the new HU would help, but doesn't hurt to try before my warrenty expires. Some HU on 99-00 TL does play my burned cds perfectly while mine didn't.....seems the luck of the draw.
#31
Oh and if they refuse to replace it and keep telling you all HU are the same say "My friend had his 99 TL HU replaced with a new one and it worked for him" or something like that. Because at first the manager kept telling me that cdrs were thicker then regular cds and it scratches the cd lens (such BS).
#33
vipvop try another dealer and if they tell you thats how its suppose to work, ask why it plays in other car cd player.....also bring a protable cd player and show them how it plays in them. Then tell them other people had their HU replaced and it worked for them. I hate dealers like that.....also keep complaining (they give in at one point or another)

yeah the guy on the phone said the same thing. Cdrs are thicker than regular cds. how would i know if its a new HU? got an appt friday at 1:00

Ask the guy who will order you the part (usually the parts manager) if the HU is a new one. Don't take used HU. I have a feeling they are taking my HU off and then giving it to some other guy who wants their HU replaced. The thing about the cdrs being thicker is bull, I didn't pay 30k+ on a car that can't play CDRs. my old 94 Toyota Camry played the CDRs why not my 30 thousand dollar Acura.
#36
Like i said before, my appt is friday, will they make me test out the HU with the cd that wont work in my car? what if the put the cd in another car, like another TL or RL or something and it didnt work? Im also takin it in for signs of early transmission failure. But come to think of it, its not really much of a problem. I can just tell them that it happens every now and then, will that be ok?
#37
2K1NighthawkTL, I was ready to show the dealer that my cdrs werent' playing in my car. But the service manager never made me test anything. Acura dealers in Florida are pretty good at checking problems out and not complaining. If they put your cdr into another TL or RL and it doesn't play....well then Acura has a problem about selling defective cd players in their high price car. If possible,do what I did, I had my friend in her Accord follow me incase I need to show that her car played the cd and bring a portable cd player. If you feel that your car's trans can fail, they should check it out based on your word (long as you're under warrenty). Having a 30k car means you have the right to complain in my option.

What time will you have your new HU in your car? I will have to take mine in at 1:00 my time, which is 2:00 your time. will you have yours in aroud 12 my time, 1:00 your time? so i can know before i take my car in.
thanks
