'08 Tsx Front Speaker Upgrade

Just looking for some advice on upgrading the front door speakers on my TSX, if anyone could help that would be great.

I'd like to spend around $100 and I don't want want to upgrade the amp as I'm on a budget.

My main goal is to improve sound quality, and some increase in sound volume (doesn't have to be ear bleeding, just could be louder than it is now...). So I'm looking for some highly efficient speakers for the front doors, in this case most likely coaxials as they usually require less power/slim fits.

I've done a little research and the alpines, polks, infinities, mb quarts, and eclipse speakers in that price range have interested me.

I was just wondering if anyone had any experience with any of these in the TSX or other stock radios? Obviously some have higher sensitivity ratings than others, but I don't always trust these numbers as accurate.

I aslo understand the factory tweeters are connected through a crossover, does this mean the door speakers run through a cross over as well, cutting off highs?? Therefore If I did, for example, replace the door speakers with alpine coaxials, would I have to disconnect the dash tweeters, or have the option of leaving/upgrading them?

BTW will be adding one 10 or 12 JLw6 for bass

Speakers... i don't have recommendations. Stock 6.5's are quite efficient. i replaced mine with the Dayton RS150 and daytons are a bit more quiet.

As you can see, these are have a 92dB at 2.83V efficiency (which is 2W at 4ohms). which really means that its 89dB at 1W. be careful when comparing efficiencies. Some will same X dB at 1 W or 2W or 2.83V. and it also depends on the impedance of the speaker.

92dB at 2.83V into a 4 ohm speaker => (2.83)^2 / Z ohms = WATTS so an 8 ohm speaker would have yielded 1W vs. the 4 ohm yields 2 Watts given the dB at 2.83V spec. i.e. the dayton would require twice the power to reach the same volume as a speaker that's spec'd to 92dB at 1W.

so more volume means... just to match the same volume, you'll need >=90dB at 1W for any replacements.

Crossover...
I'm not aware of any passive xover anywhere for the tweets or other speakers. There are active (electronic xovers) that are built within the stock amp. the doors are full range-ish. the rear deck is about 40-90Hz. tweets are 5kHz+. look for my thread on the tsx's stock frequency response.

Good luck...

Damn, I assumed most listed sensitivities were 1watt at one meter/4 ohm, so thanks for that advice!

Sorry to hijack the thread, but a quick question. Other than the sensitivity, how do you like those Daytons? Trying to put something cheap and simple together for my wife's truck using stuff I have. Have everyhting but a decent set of (low priced)mids. Those look like they'd be perfect.

In an a/b comparison with the stock 6.5's, they are much better in terms of clarity and openess, but are just slightly more quiet. They aren't meant for bass though, their 3dB is about 100Hz. Without an upgraded amp or source (HU), i don't think i've witnessed how good they can be. The Dayton RS series is used in a lot in home hi fi diy for high value. I'm guessing with a high quality source they would really shine. They aren't scan-speak grade, but they are a fifth of the cost.

NOTE for installation: This has a large magnet. I used the HSB-518 speaker adapter for the tsx doors. When i mounted the speaker on the adapter and began to assemble the adapter assembly (adapter+speaker) into the door speaker cavity, the magnet blocked access. After some forceful pushes and a few magnetic shavings later (removed the magnetic rubber protector), it just fit.

Verify mechanical dimensions before buying.

BTW, here's a link to data. the reviewer has a comments link on the drivers at the bottom of the page
http://www.mfk-projects.com/dayton_rs_2.htm
here's another test comparison link... the focal 5W's were ranked on the bottom. looks like rs150 is higher up in this review (look at bottom of website)

From what I remember of elduderino's posts, the front speakers are crossed over in the amp. The high f are not sent to the front door speakers. The only speakers receiving a full range signal are the rear doors. At least that's how I remember it. :2cents

That's funny, that's not how I remember it. (Did the old FAQ get lost?) I thought the tweets had a crossover in the amp, but the door speakers were full range. There might have been a sub or very low frequency filter for those, but I'm pretty sure that the high frequencies were there; this would be an option for those who want to run full-range door speakers (and remove the tweets?). I suppose you could just add a filter to lower the volume of the tweets and balance out the sound, but you'd have to do some testing to see how bright your new door speakers were. Or you could just try it and see. ;-)

Re: 89db, yeah, I'd stay away from low efficiency speakers using the stock amp. You're fine as long as you have enough power, though.

^^ I found the FAQ, and, you're right. The FAQ says both doors (front and back) get a full range signal. So it must be my memory that failing.

No the door front door speakers are rolled off inside the factory amp. I posted some measurements awhile back when I had the amp on my test bench and Castles_Saloon posted some response curves. I think the roll off starts around 10khz and is 10dB down at 15khz. Here is the link

A lot of info in the old ElDude FAQs is sorely outdated or has been found to be incorrect. Largely thanks to Castles_Saloon and mercman. I've been adding disclaimers to them as I find them on the old posts.

I'm just the post editing monkey.

I don't see any old bad posts anymore that I didn't disclaimer, I even removed a few from the FAQs. If we have nominations for new threads to be added, or a combination thread to be included, I'm up for it.

Speaker upgrade

In reguards to the start of this thread I suggest ED 6000v2 (thats Elemental
designs) They are great even off the stock deck power and they have spacers
that they make for them. I'm running them now off of an ed 9.4 and they are
so loud that at about 15 on the radio is enough for my wife to want to get
out of the car. Even before I amped them I got complements all the time
on the clarity. If you go to their web site (www.elementaldesigns.com)
and type "forum" in the search box you can get them for $95. $40 bucks off
the reg price on the web site. I ran MB quarts, Bostons, Infinity, and alpine
in the car and none of them touch these speakers. BTW I didn't tell you about the
discount!!!
