Trying to decide: Type S vs G70

Also the gauge cluster and this is a big one for me. While I would prefer a full digital cluster on both, the half digital half analog setup on the '22 G70 looks ultra cheap like a Nissan Versa. This is especially egregious since they have full digital options offered on the same car in other markets.

Three Wheelin'
I test drove both of these cars and it would be tight but I'd lean slightly towards the G70 purely for the driving dynamics. Quick summary from the test drive
G70 3.3T Pros
Better steering, acceleration, overall performance. Interior leather and design/construction feels higher quality, better infotainment.
Type S Pros
Exterior design, nicer wheel options, better exhaust note and ELS audio.

The g70 is way more then .2 sec faster.
I've been sitting back the last couple weeks watching all the hype about the Type S and realizing that reality isn't fully living up to the hype. I remember driving home the night I traded in my 535xi for my Acura TLX A-Spec and wondering if I had made a mistake. My BMW was bigger, faster and smoother driving than the car I was driving home in. After driving my TLX for the last couple months, I've gotta say that it doesn't really bother me that it isn't quite as fast as the competition. I would like for it to be 300 lbs lighter with another 30 hp....but the car drives just fine as it is. The same thing is going to be the case for the vast majority of Type S owners. Sure, the G70 might beat it in a race....but it's got a god awful front grill and it just doesn't like as good as the Acura. If you aren't lining up in a drag race, a Type S is plenty fast.
Every time I see the Genesis logo, I can't help but think it's a Chrysler logo and that the car is secretly a piece of junk. I like the symmetry and looks of the TLX a lot more than the G70. I never drove the G70 since the 2.0L version wasn't on my interest list and there were no 3.3L in the area at the time, but the TLX drives great. My BMW was smooth on the road, but it was kind of a whale. The TLX feels smaller and lighter in comparison and it turns and corners incredibly well for a relatively heavy car.
At the end of the day, I think people should be buying these cars based on what makes them feel better as they are walking up to them, sitting down....and driving on a daily basis and worrying less about whether or not the G70 with the 3.3L is 0.2 seconds faster 0-60. Both cars are ridiculously fast and would crush the supercars of yesteryear. Fretting about fractions of a second in performance is kind of dumb.

That is a huge difference. There trap speeds in the 1/4 are also big difference. The g70 traps 108-109 while the type s traps 102-103.

I think the G70 is a god awful ugly car with cheap Hyundai parts sprinkled in. Buy it if you love it so much....but no thanks from my perspective.

Car and Driver says 4.9 for the Type S and 4.7 for the G70. G70 is incrementally faster if that's important to you. I don't know about you, but I don't remember the last time that I was racing someone at 103 mph. If raw speed is all that is important to you....don't buy a TLX. If you want the best looking car in the class with a pretty good stereo, a nice interior and above average performance....you look at the TLX. I guarantee that if the cars are not side by side that 99.9% of people can't tell the difference between the two cars in the speed department.

I was so stoked for the Type S in that delicious blue... but then I started researching the G70, and Genesis just offers so many more amenities (including free (valet!) service), *much* better tech (360 camera in 2022... really Acura? No rear USB???), plus the G70 gets astounding reviews all around, especially the 2022. Price is pretty much identical (around $53K). I'm a longtime Honda/Acura guy and I know Genesis is made by Hyundai, but it's getting reviews (and has for a few years) from literally everyone putting it just shy of the BMW 345i, for thousands less ... anyone else in the same boat / have any thoughts?
The only thing I hate about the G70 is that they didn't include the full digital cluster or even the analogue cluster from the prior year. The half digital/half analog cluster looks very cheap - like something you'd find in an economy car. Other than that, it's a very compelling package.

LOL that 4.9 0-60 car and driver got is with .3 1ft rollout that they just started using which is 5.2……..the g70 got 4.7 with no 1ft rollout and it was RWD. Motortrend got 4.5 0-60 for the AWD g70 no 1ft rollout. Car and driver git for the stinger gt which is basically a g70 but slightly heavier 4.4 0-60 n 12.9 1/4 @110 for the rwd stinger and 4.6 0-60 n 13.2 1/4 mile @108 both are not using 1ft rollout. Sam carlegion raced the g70 n type s and type s got smoked. AHC garage did multiple dragy runs in type s and got 5.2 0-60 n 13.6 1/4 mile @103 every run. Edmunds got 5.2 0-60 n 13.5 1/4 mile @102 as well in there review. Another channel On YouTube dynod the type s and it only had 280whp. Every other car in the class dynos at 320-330whp or more. You say the g70 has cheap interior parts but that’s funny I’ve never saw a single review where anyone says this infact they say it’s interior is very good. Looks are subjective but the g70 is very attractive imo. The type s looks good too but it sacrificed trying to look like it has RWD proportions by being very heavy. You say the type s has above average performance maybe for a regular economy car. Buy for its segment it’s has very underwhelming performance it’s dead last in the segment it’s not even close. I really had high hopes for the typos when I first heard about it but the way Acura market it first how it really performs in real life I’m sorry I it’s a huge disappointment.

If you’re more about speed in this segment then the M340i is really the only choice.

Your not getting the point. It’s not just about speed. The g70/stinger actually hang with the Germans. Shit I see stingers doing 12.5s stock in the 1/4. But the Koreans hang with the Germans while being 10-15k cheaper. That is what the type s was supposed to be. But the type s doesn’t even hang with the Koreans………shameful

No it’s not just about speed. But if I buy a car in this segment it better damn well be able to hang and hold it’s own with the competition. The Koreans atleast do the average mid 4s 0-60 n high 12s in the 1/4. All while being 10-15k less then the Germans sometimes 20k less. The type s was supposed to do that. But it doesn’t even compete with the Koreans let alone the Germans. If I’m spending 50k+ on a vehicle I want it to be able to hang with other cars in the segment. The type S is slower then a Sonata N line that is only 290hp FWD. if the Koreans didn’t exist it would be more tolerable but they have way more performance for the same price or cheaper with more tech/features. Me personally would never buy the dead last slowest car in the segment by a good margin. Really only thing has going for it is looks which are subjective and a decent exhaust note.

Also many reviews have stated the g70 is 98% as good as the m340i……..obviously it’s not as quick but handling wise etc feels just like m340i. Even with the AWD g70 it is still very playful and can get on throttle oversteer very easily. I’ve seen reviewers say it’s better handling then m340i and more talkative steering. For 10-15k less then m340i that’s very impressive. The 3.3t is not as good as the b58 but it is a beast of a motor. I’ve seen them hitting high 10s with just bolt ons and a JB4 piggyback tune. They dyno around 320-330whp so they are underrated from the factory. More around 380hp then 365. I’ve only seen one dyno of the type s but it wasn’t good. 280whp. If that holds true that means the Acura 3.0t is slightly overrated from factory.

That is exactly what happened. The sad thing is the Koreans have only been doing performance sedans since 2018. Acura has been doing them for over 20 years. It’s sad they let the Koreans put out better product then them when the Koreans are basically brand new to the game. Acura is just resting on there laurels. The Koreans are hungry. But I thought with the new type s Acura finally would get there act together and put out some heat. Boy was I let down. How is the Type S the newest motor/platform in the segment but is the slowest in the segment by a good margin? That is embarrassing. They knew the performance specs of the competition and didn’t even come close to them. Acura wouldn’t even mention the Koreans in there Marketing for the type s they said there competition was only the Germans. But the Koreans blow the type s out the water. They lost there value card because the Koreans are the same price or cheaper with way more performance. Acura right now imo is embarrassing. If the TLX type s is not really quick then the MDX type s which is a lot heavier is really going to be slow for its segment. It’s still using the same 3.0t with the same 355hp.

So you joined this site yesterday just to bash the Type S? I’m probably wrong yet I’ve long suspected that there’s a cadre of folks that are getting paid to pump up online both the G70 and Stinger.

No I joined because I was really excited about the type s………..until it officially came out and it’s performance specs were revealed. Acura played a lot of people with its BS marketing schemes. I wanted to see what the people in here thought about the type s since it came out. I’ve seen no evidence of people online being paid to pump up the Koreans. I have on the other hand witnessed just recently that whole Sham at Laguna Seca for the type S reveal. If seen redline review stage a drag race to where they purposely made the type s win vs the S4. But that has been exposed. It gets demolished by the S4. These deceptive tactics Acura are using are pitiful. I kno for a fact people either purchased or put a deposit down on the type s soley on that staged redline review race. I wanted to see if the Acura loyalists saw thru the BS. It appears not. Blame Acura for how they marketed the type s and how much they hyped it up………….just to be not even mediocre but dead last in performance is not cool at all. Like I said before I had high hopes for the type s might have bought one but Acura pulled a fast one and imo deserves to be called out on it.

I get a kick out of the “if it’s all about the speed….” Comments. It’s almost never about just one thing. I traded a 540 BMW for my G70. I loved the BMW. But it was about price, ride, features, stereo, seats………. I was at a point where I wanted to spend less money on a car and the G70 was an easy decision. In a perfect world I would put the M340 engine in a G70. I love the G70 and after four months I would say that even if it cost the same as the Audi, BMW etc.

Its not like the didn't screw the pouch with the original TLX. Really hot looking car is shown about a month before its the not that attractive brother the real TLX was dropped on the fans with a fabulous transmission.

And the three or four villagers light up their torches & grab their pitchforks.Easier to attack the messenger than rationally defend what the product is vs what Acura says it is.

At least the 5 door guys can have some fun when the new MDX Type S hits the market. Maybe it will be quicker than my 3 ton Chevy 4X4.
You sir are the one who has the nerve to ask a brand new member for his hall pass. Like he is somehow not supposed to be here unless he chants the Acura "Precision Crafted Performance" mantra at least ten times & swears blind allegiance to the brand no matter how badly they screw over the fans with unkept promises.
BTW you get a new torch yet....its gotten a real workout on the defence.

Yeah, they really pulled out all the stops on this one. I got the Sport Plus (which I believe is called Sport Prestige in the US) and it just has everything you can imagine in terms of tech and features. 375 hp isn’t too shabby either. Picking it up in a few days and will post a few pictures then.

People who have been exceptionally vocal about the third coming of the TYPE-S expecting it will kick German butt based on fake advertising & fake events find it better to make excuses for Acuras marketing practices than admit it was never Acuras intent to go head to head with them in hardware. It was all about building an image based on a Legend (no pun intended) that never was. The Last TL-S was a very modest 271CC increase in a 2 year effort to buck up falling sales at the end of the 3G product cycle.
That Legend grew all out of proportion to reality since the year it was introduced. They all seem to have forgotten back in 2007 when the TL-S was release C&D tested the new BMW335i

bigger motor TLX I would feel a whole lot better about it.
You showed the performance specs of that 2007 335i. The 2021 type S runs the same times as a 14 year old car with what 300hp? That’s simply a disgrace in my book. No excuses.

No problem. Acura deserves to be called out on this one. Sadly the majority of Acura loyalists are still in denial. And the fact some people are paying over MSRP for the type s is just plain robbery imo. I’ll give it to Acura there deceptive tactics worked on a lot of loyal Acura customers.

Why does it matter when I joined? I’m just saying what a lot of people are thinking but don’t want to say. Acura took there shot and missed again with the Type S. It’s not right how they schemed and lied. If it was better product like I said before I wouldn’t be saying a damn thing. I kno Acura can do it. Look at the CTR…….that’s a hell of a car. Even the RDX 2.0t imo is very good. The sport sedan segment is fierce tho with a lot of competition. Acura hyped it up to make it look like the Type S would finally bring a sport sedan that could FINALLY COMPETE in the segment. It doesn’t compete tho it gets embarrassed. It’s not the value proposition either anymore the Koreans stole that. So I’ll ask you what is it to the segment?………..a nice looking daily driver? You can get a ASPEC for that. IMO it’s the biggest fattest slowest car in the segment with pretty much the same backseat room as a g70 which is much smaller then TLX. If you say it’s just a fun daily driver then why does it have 2 huge structural braces that pretty much block the extra space one could utilize by putting the backseat down. The Type S doesn’t know what it wants to be. Did Acura really think the heaviest car in the segment with pretty much the least hp/tq in the segment was a good recipe? So many head scratchers I can’t count.

Thank you, sir. Just for fun, I recommend you go check it out at your nearby Genesis dealership. What Genesis is doing is pretty much forcing car buyers to recalibrate how we rank car brands in terms of desirability. They’re literally challenging decades-old preconceptions.

This is the test of the 2012 335i sedan (at that time the F30 was just introduced)
Zero to 60 mph: 5.3 sec
Zero to 100 mph: 13.0 sec
Street Start, 5-60 mph: 5.9 sec
Standing ¼-mile: 13.8 sec @ 103 mph
Car weighted 3551 lbs

355 HP and 4200 lbs can get you only so far....
