Damaged Sun Roof Question

I took my 2015 TLX to the dealer and had them look at the sunroof to see some of the seal that was messed up in the sunroof. This damage was noticed less than 2 months of me owning this car. I am the only one who drives it and I use the sun roof a lot. The car is still under the factory warranty.

They denied the warranty warranty claim on this damage. The service rep stated they are not covering because it looked like something rubbed up against it. I would agree that something rubbed up against it, but I think it happened inside the sunroof mechanism itself and not because of some outside force. I looked inside an saw there was nothing apparently rubbing it but maybe the part that damaged it has moved back into place or something.

I thought maybe it was something from the road, but it would have to have perfectly tracked the foam, gouged it and not damaged any of the paint or surrounding areas. Once section looks like a metal burr picked at it. Even a bag or purse would have left other scratches on the paint with this much damage to the foam. This had to be a rigid metal surface, much like is inside the sunroof mechanism. I put pictures below from two different times of day.

Has anyone else had a similar issue?

Later in the day after I wiped it off some.
Earlier in the day before wiping it off.

the only thing wrong with your assumption is; how does an internal mechanism gouge the gasket externally?

operate the sunroof and take pictures for us to see if the insides line up with the outside damage

The glass slides into the roof. The rubber seal would/could hit the inside of the roof

take pictures of metal lining up with damage.

then that would be your proof that it is indeed damaging the gasket

Maybe rodents are nibbling at it. Is the seal made out of soy based material?

In addition to pictures, I'd take a video of the roof retracting and coming back out.

Good suggestions. I will try them out and see what I figure out. I may see if I can find a endoscope camera and see. Cannot get a good angle into the sunroof to be able to see all the way to the back when it fully retracts.

Thank you for the help everyone!

you could even put some packaging tape down.
lay packaging tape on top of damaged gaskets.

operate sunroof.
close sunroof.

check tape for damage.

in for results!!!!!

You would think the dealership would have already done this research to verify that it was indeed damage not done by the sunroof/car. But my personal experience with Acura dealerships is that they are lazy, incompetent, and pro-actively trying to avoid warranty work. Acura owners have to log, video, and persistently complain for them to do anything..
