Steering noise?
Steering noise?
I've been noticing this for sometime now.
Not a big problem, but when the car is at very slow speeds (ie. 0-5mph during a 3 point turn) and whenever I turn the steering wheel fairly rapidly (not sure if it occurs when I turn the wheel slowly), I can hear the steering wheel turning. Sounds something like a very mild grinding noise.
Once the car is moving >5mph, there is no steering noise when I turn.
I called a local dealership; they said it was normal. I told the tech that I thought the 4G TL had electronic power steering. The tech said there was still some fluid present, which is contributing to the noise, though the TL has EPS. I was thinking, eh???
Has anyone else experienced this?

place car in park, engine on, now turn from left to right as fast as you can. yeah hear that that whoohoowhooossh whooohooowhooosh, thats normal. if thats the same type noise you hear then its normal.
but if you hear or feel a clunk on the steering wheel(shaft) that is not normal. ive heard/felt this clunk while foot on brake and giving the car gas. or when turning and braking. thats a column defect

its a characteristic of the eps. the noise is comming from the motor. i know its wierd to think of it comming from the motor but its so noticable in the cabin. well thenoise is transferd through the rack/shaft etc. notice how smoothe and effortless the steering is on these compared to the hydro. power steering system tls, well its a characteristic of electronic power steering system, some dont mind it and others are driven nuts ny it.
I hear that little clunk clunk noise as well when braking and turning - thats what I mentioned in another thread as kind of like a spring compressing and depressiong - thought it was a brake thing, but I only here it when my foot is on the brake - not otherwise
is that still the column defect?

Took my TL into my dealer this morning, and gave them a print out of the TSB B090-050. The service guy said he couldn't hear the sound, but I guess the mechanic could hear that with the right tools, and they ordered new parts for me. Hopefully this will fix the steering wheel column sound when the parts arrive next week

Is this issue in any way related to the click noise that I described in a previous topic? https://acurazine.com/forums/4g-tl-problems-fixes-297/steering-wheel-click-sound-722954/
It's like a wheeeeer sound in mine, it dull sound like on a plane's flaps being moved. Asked a mechanic at the dealership and a friend who's a mechanic and I got the same reply, " Electronic Power Steering."
I had a 2009 that made that sound and I thought it was normal, I didn't find it annoying, just different. I traded up to a 2010 ( had to have the 6 speed manual) and this one doesn't do it at all.
got my car back today, took my deealer twice to fix the poping noise.
so far, nothing can be heard from the steering wheel.
however, one interesting thing to share to all canadian TL owners. The steering column popping noise TSB doesn't exist in the candaian database, so you have to get a good dealer that is willing to do this for you. As they will have to prove to honda canada that the steering column actually have probelm. The techinican told me there were only 5 cars (excluding mine, i guess) in Canada got this problem and was being fixed by Acura's dealers.

I have the same problem in my TL, and got it checked they said nothing was wrong with it, but my cousin's 7 series had the same noise and for him a wiring harness was wrapping around something everytime he was turning. I told the dealer this and they said it wasn't the same thing.
I heard it also in the car I was driving over the weekend. Thought it sounded normal. I could not get it when the car was stopped, only when rolling in a parking lot. I assumed it was the EPS and didn't give it another thought.
